Talks From The Crypt: Horror and True Crime
#22 - Chuck Russell (Nightmare On Elm St. 3: Dream Warriors, The Blob, The Mask, Bless The Child)

Chuck Russell, the legendary director behind The Mask, The Blob, and A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, joins us in the Crypt to talk about the wild ride of his illustrious Hollywood career – from nearly directing Child’s Play and almost turning The Mask into a horror film, to working with Jim Carrey, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Frank Darabont – and to promote his newest film Witchboard.

Chuck opens up about UFO encounters, the paranormal, near-death experiences, and the forces that might be influencing Hollywood from behind the curtain. He breaks down practical effects, dream research, faith, simulation theory, and what it really means to create from both sides of the veil.

He also discusses his early years breaking into the industry, performing stunts, and writing screenplays in 1980s Hollywood. Chuck shares his views on the “Horror Ghetto,” why he declined Child’s Play, and how he feels about the later Nightmare on Elm Street sequels.

#21 - The Mystic Museum & Horror Boodega (Owners Erick Yaro Wessel & Terri Rivera)

Erick Wessel and Terri Rivera are the creators of The Mystic Museum and The Horror Boodega, two of LA’s most unique horror destinations.

In this episode, we trace the journey from punk rock beginnings and getting drunk in Vegas to how a small oddities shop grew into the Mystic Museum and how the Horror Boodega was built in just four months. We talk about nostalgia, wearing horror on our sleeves, and designing immersive spaces that celebrate the genre and bring fans deeper into the experience.

We get into the paranormal side of the Mystic Museum — from hauntings and séances to visitor encounters and even a true crime event tied to the building. We reflect on belief vs. skepticism, how fear of death connects to our love for horror, and why these stories resonate so deeply with fans.We also cover the state of horror film culture today: the best and worst films of the year, remakes and reboots, mean-spirited horror, critics, and the movies we defend even when everyone else hates them.

Along the way, we talk about the first horror films that shook us, casting mega-stars in horror, and the exhibits that keep the Mystic Museum evolving — from Horror High Reunion to Total Grotesque Live, their Evil Dead collaboration, and partnership with Eli Roth’s Horror Section Studios.

Talks From The Crypt: Horror and True Crime
#15 - Sean Clark (Horror's Hallowed Grounds, Convention All Stars, The Thing With Two Heads)

Sean Clark joins us in the Crypt to talk about his journey through the horror industry, from Horror’s Hallowed Grounds and the Halloween franchise, to shaping the modern horror convention scene.

We explore the evolution of horror conventions, highlighting the thrill and struggle of getting celebrities on board, building “25 Years of Terror,” and Sean’s insider experience with the “horror elite.” We talk horror's golden ages of the 30s, 70s, and 80s, discussing the MPAA's role in shaping the genre, and the way conventions have evolved since the '90s, for better or worse. Sean opens up about his early days, his hesitations about joining YouTube, and the struggles and successes he faced on projects like Halloween 2 and Halloween 3.

We also dig into recent horror headlines, debating reboots and sequels, Halloween, Exorcist: Believer, Alien: Romulus, and The Crow, along with original titles like Thanksgiving, LongLegs, Maxxxine, and much more. We share thoughts on today’s horror “elite”, the tension between fans and executives, and horror’s thematic shift to psychological scares with films like Hereditary, Midsommar, and Beau Is Afraid.

Talks From The Crypt: Horror and True Crime
#14 - Joe Coleman (Legendary Painter, Actor, Collector, & Performance Artist)

Joe Coleman, the legendary artist whose work digs into the darkest corners of the human psyche, joins us in the Crypt to discuss everything from painting serial killers like Carl Panzram, Albert Fish, and Ed Gein, to sharing the secrets of his controversial art. Join us as we delve into the contradictory beauty of the grotesque and the divine.

Joe takes us inside his Odditorium, a personal collection as eerie as his paintings, where he houses macabre artifacts like a painting by John Wayne Gacy, the actual letter Albert Fish sent to Grace Budd's mother, a lock of Charles Manson's hair, and a Christmas card from Ed Gein. These relics serve as a tangible connection, DNA, to the energy that Joe channels into his art.

We explore the paradoxes of life and death that permeate Joe's art, discuss his fascination with the redacted stories of the Bible, the corruption of the soul and flesh, and dive into his experiences selling art to icons like HR Giger, Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Iggy Pop.
