Talkin' Slayer: A Metal Podcast and Half-@ssed Audiobook

60 episodes

Talkin' Slayer tells the story of Slayer, the thrashiest of the Big Four thrash metal bands. After some introduction episodes, this weekly show recaps the history of the Los Angeles heavy metal institution, in chronological order: how the band happened, when things fell apart, how they put them back together, and what it all meant—no, MEANS. After Episode 9, Patreon supporters receive every weekly episode. Talkin' Slayer is written, deeply researched, lightly edited, and mostly rehearsed, with some production value. Episodes start after :60-:90 of intro; no need to skip the first 20 minutes.

Talkin' Slayer: A Metal Podcast and Half-@ssed Audiobook
Episode 81: Talkin’ the Big Four Bands... Advanced Thrash Metrics and Career Comparisons & the First Concerts

LAST WEEK, Patreon supporters got a super long chapter about the era around World Painted Blood, the final album with musical mastermind Jeff Hanneman.

THIS WEEK'S TOPIC is the Big Four American Thrash Metal Bands. You’re getting  two chapters about the boys... ALL the boys. The rivals. The allies. The frenemies. All of the above. United and strong. Mostly.

Press play and hear the new & improved versions of chapters 43 and 44 from the MONSTORIOUSLY EMBIGGENED unofficial band biography, "Slayer 66 2/3: A Metal Band Biography... or, How F*kin' Slayer Kicked F*kin' @ss," by your pal and host, D.X. Ferris.

Can you truly compare the careers of Metalica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax? Yes, you can. And we do. Get ready for metrics, advanced SLAYERMETRICS — it's a thing — superlatives, statistics, facts, hallmarks, career highs, questionable lows, and other dubious distinctions. It all ends with the Big Four Bands on the same stage, at the same time, playing the same song… sorta.

And, yes, we get into whether the term "Big Four" is appropriate.

DEEZ NOTEZ:

...are from the endnotes in the book. The ebook features these sources as live links. It's better than TV... if anything can be better than TV, that is.

Bonus Episode: The International Day of Slayer Origin Story, Plus the Most Infamous Show

Talkin' Slayer, Episode 79.

JUNE 6 IS THE INTERNATIONAL DAY SLAYER.

And it's Tom Araya's birthday. Happy birthday, Tom! Tom, of course, has the most metal birthdate: 6/6/61.

To commemorate, enjoy these rerun chapters about...

1) The origins of this most momentous holiday. And...

2) Slayer's most infamous show. Manic fans tore up part of the Madison Square Garden complex, then known as the Felt Forum. They couldn't play the city's biggest venue for years afterward.

As an emerging major-label band, Slayer invoked a true mania. What was Slayer capable of at the height of their powers? Get a taste of what separated the group from the rest of the pack.

An angry Tom Araya onstage is a thing of wonder. The new version of the book has an index entry devoted to it.

This episode includes some preliminary content about Rubinology, the study of Rick Rubin & his work.

VIDEO: Slayer, live in NYC, at the Felt Forum, 1988.

The world's most dangerous band was in the great city in the world, and they weren't playing for Letterman.

Come back Monday for a long, updated episode about Christ Illusion, the classic lineup's reunion album.

Episode 71: The Rulers Are Back... A Fresh Look at Rick Rubin and Reign in Blood

Todays's topics include a detailed look at Rick Rubin, Slayer's enigmatic longtime producer, executive producer, label boss, and benefactor. Stay tuned, and you'll learn more about how the band made Reign in Blood... what fans think about it... what Jeff said about the, ahem, German content in "Angel of Death"... an update on what happened to the long-lost album cover artwork... and more.

The old version of the Reign In Blood chapter is the most popular episode after the Jeff Hanneman tributes. Now that chapter is bigger and better. And badder. And deffer. This week, you hear the additions to the chapter in the new version of the unofficial, exhaustively researched band biography "SLAYER 66 2/3: A METAL BAND BIOGRAPHY" (REBORN & RE-REMASTERED 4TH EDITION).

Talkin' Slayer, Episode 69: The Slaytanic Survey (So Far). Your last chance to answer!

This episode is different kind of show. Today's topic is the Slaytanic Survey results as of October 28, 2024. It's a long chapter with a lot of numbers. What are your favorite tunes and records? How does you opinion compare to everybody else? Tune and find out.

If this sounds boring, and you jonesin' for your weekly fix of Slaytanic history, worry not. Check THIS out:

Original Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo drops all kind of great Slayer history of Brian Slagel's podcast, 100 Songs That Define Heavy Metal. Slagel's co-host is world-champion metal author Martin Popoff. Listen HERE FOR SPOTIFY. Or HERE FOR APPLE.

Monday March 31 is your final chance to participate in round 2 of The Slaytanic Survey. These original surveys have been open for a year, and they are about to close.

The survey results — as of Fall 2024 — are featured in the book "Slayer 66 2/3: A Metal Band Biography." The final results will be added in the next major update. And you'll never have to hear about it again.

At TALKIN' SLAYER, free listeners miss every other episode — and then some. Patreon supporters get every episode and bonus material. Packages start at less than $1 per episode. For a little more, host Ferris will say your name on the podcast machines. Learn more at Patreon.com/SlayerBook. Last week, the Slaytreon Team got a long look at whether Kerry King is a hero, a d*ck... or maybe both?

SLAYTANIC SURVEYS
Following are the survey links. No registration necessary. They're all multiple choice questions. It takes a minute... maybe two, if you can't decide whether you like "Angel of Death" or "Raining Blood" more. There will not be a quiz. Talkin' Slayer, Episode 64: The Kerry King Band Live, Round 2

This week's topic is a report from the Kerry King band's headlining live set Friday, January 31 at the Cleveland House of Blues. The band were pretty good when they opened for Mastodon. Five months and one Slayer reunion later, are they better? Hear all about it.

Check the Patreon page for photos.

By the end of February, Talkin' Slayer will return with new, regular, normal, weekly shows. Well, if you're a Patreon supporter, you'll get an episode every week. If you're not, you get one every other week.

Click HERE for Episode 57. It's an in-depth review of the KK band's previous appearance in Cleveland, opening for Mastodon. This episode is not like that.

This week is another abnormal episode.

Normally, Ferris reads Slaytanic history to you from his book Slayer 66 2/3: A Metal Band Biography... or, How F*kin' Slayer Kicked F*ckin' Ass (The new REBORN + RE-REMASTERED 4th Edition). The new update is massive and substantial. Now it's a lot bigger. Now it has a lot more photos. Now it is easier to read.

Talkin' Slayer: A Metal Podcast and Half-@ssed Audiobook
Episode 63: Updates on Podcast & GIANT New Revised Edition of the Book. Then...

Hey, pals. Ferris here. We're not exactly back, but we will be soon.

This week, I tell you what's in the immediate future for the podcast. And I tell you about the massive, new, revised, expanded version of the book.

Long story short...

1) Next week, I'm seeing the Kerry King band play headlining show. Then I'll drop an episode about it.

2) And shortly after that, we'll be back, with new additions to the book.

3) I TOTALLY (mostly) revised the book that I read from here, Slayer 66 2/3: A Metal Band Biography... or, How F*kin' Slayer Kicked F*ckin' Ass. Now it's a lot bigger. It has a lot more photos. And it is easier to read.

I tell you all about it in the episode. The book is thoroughly expanded, and it is not optional.

If you want to buy an autographed copy directly from me, reach out, and we can do that. Directions for that option are in the episode.

Talkin' Slayer: A Metal Podcast and Half-@ssed Audiobook
Episode 62: News + Quick Recap of Aftershock, the Second & Final 2024 Reunion Show

HEY YINZ! Here's some news, plus a quick recap of Slayer's second and final 2024 reunion show at California's Aftershock fest. Some links follow. This is another different kind of episode. And it's short. Here's the important stuff, moreso than the episode itself:

DEEZ NOTES -- UPDDATED (Two Ds for a Double Dose of Slayage):

News story about the Slayer fan who sustained fatal injuries at the Chicago Fest:https://blockclubchicago.org/2024/10/08/family-of-man-who-died-after-riot-fest-raising-money-for-services-and-seeking-answers/

GoFundMe for his family: https://www.gofundme.com/f/aid-for-hospital-recovery-journey

Single video of the entire Aftershock set. Viewpoint: CLOSE. Sound: Janky. Price: Free... so hey, you know? This one has the best viewpoint, but it has a lot of jumpy edits, with songs cut short:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDVVLghGWY8

Another single video of the entire show. All in all, this might be the best one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3W52Ksvs22s

One more video of the whole show:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqXRlRwscYA

UPDATED: Video playlist of clips from the show. I'll add more as more videos appear:

See the setlist at Setlist.fm, and I'll run the songs after these notes.

Single video of the entire show, from different angles, sound varies:

Also, please take the Slaytanic Surveys. AND tell your friends about the survey. Post it. Pass it around. The more the better. We need something like 30 more respondents, at least. 300 would be better.

1) The Slaytanic Survey (Round 2): Please tell us about your favorite songs and albums.
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/7YRH76S

2) The OTHER Slayantic Survey (Round 1): Who is Slayer's MVP? What was their best tour? Do you see the reunion coming? What's your LEAST favorite record? And...? Tell us here.

Talkin' Slayer is -- normally, not this week -- deeply researched, written, mostly rehearsed, and lightly edited, with some production value. Normally, host D.X. Ferris reads you chapters about Slayer's history, from his second book about the band, "Slayer 66 & 2/3: A Metal Band Biography." But not this week. Because sometimes we have Slayer news.

Talkin' Slayer, Episode 61: Report From First Reunion Show @ Chicago Riot Fest. Plus Details on Canceled Second Show.

Ferris saw the first Slayer reunion show. Which, as it turned out, was the only reunion show in September. He tells you all about it, blow by blow. Sights, sounds, sensations and smells from the pit.

YouTube playlist of the entire Chicago Riot Fest show. I tried to strike a balance between video & sound quality. And I used multiple songs in video when possible, to minimize interruptions.

Talkin' Slayer: A Metal Podcast and Half-@ssed Audiobook
Talkin' Slayer, Episode 59: Slayer & Branding... or, Slayer Gets Cooler

Today’s topic is Slayer and branding. Ferris talks about what Slayer means, and what it’s worth — to the band, to brands, and to us fans. This is some Thrash 101 talk, but you get advanced metrics & rock theory, too.

Do you wear the mark? Who sells more T-shirts... Slayer, the [Rolling] Stones, the Foo Fighters, or Metallica? Do the Foo Fighters rock or suck? How is Reign in Blood selling these days? Has the thrashiest Big Four Thrash B[r]and sold out? We look at some numbers and render judgment.

Right before Slayer return for their hotly anticipated reunion shows and sell a barge load of T-shirts, the most high-profile Slayer product is… a series of cooler and refrigeration products with Slayer’s name, logo, and artwork on them. Does this partnership enterprise make sense?

Business & branding writer Cheryl Wischover interviewed Ferris for her article “Slayer Sells Out?", for the Whatever Nevermind Substack. Click here to read it.

Longtime listeners may recognize some of tonight's points. For newcomers, the show covers some basic Slayer & heavy metal 101. But this week also features new original research, thoughts, and commentary on our metal heroes — and what it takes to make a dollar and a cent in the music game in 2024.

This is another unusual episode. Talkin’ Slayer is generally a weekly podcast. And it is mostly about the history of the band, based on original interviews and extensive archival research. Ferris usually reads a chapter or two or three from his book Slayer 66 2/3: A Metal Band Biography, which has a ton of sick photos and graphics, and is cheap online. So is the other book he wrote about the band, which is an entire freakin’ book about Reign in Blood. It’s not expensive. People like it.

Talkin' Slayer will return next week, with a report from Slayer's first reunion show at Chicago's RiotFest.

There's a photo of SLAYER carved into the back of a bald head, but it's clearly fake.

Episode 58: Podcast Postmortem... Talkin' Talkin' Slayer on Talking Bollocks

This week's topic: Acid Reign frontman/Talking Bollocks host/Motörcast host/all around standup guy Howard "H" Smith interviews Talkin' Slayer host D.X. Ferris about this show, Slayer, Kerry King, organizational harmony, and what it's all about. This is mostly a behind-the-scenes look at the show, where it came from, and how it happens. Talkin' Slayer: A Metal Podcast and Half-@ssed Audiobook
