Religion and Lived Realities

"Religious leaders need to listen. ... When we listen and put a human face to people, then we will realize that actually, there is much more we don't know," Prof Esther Mombo.

On Episode 2 of the Swaiba Faith, Feminism and Freedom series, we continue to explore how religious norms reinforce gender-based violence against women and gender minorities. We turn to theology with the phenomenal Prof. Esther Mombo. She is an Associate Professor in the Theology Department at St. Paul's Limuru. She teaches Church History and Theology from Women's Perspectives and inter-faith courses. Prof. Mombo is passionate about finding spaces to visibilize rather than invisibilize gender and sexual minorities.

Prof. Mombo highlights the need to dialogue and the importance of religion not only listening to, but also adequately addressing the lived realities of the population.

Religious Norms and SGBV in Kenya

Patriarchal interpretations of Scriptures that subordinate women to men continue to proliferate throughout the places of worship leaving women more likely to experience spousal abuse, socio-economic and political oppression, and subjugation. The Faith, Feminism and Freedom series seeks to nurture alternative theological visions of a loving God who affirms the full personhood and flourishing of women.

The series will provide inter-faith grassroots safe spaces that facilitate transformative conversations with faith leaders and their communities. This is aimed at shifting normative religious and cultural patriarchal norms that limit self-expression, promote discrimination, tolerate violence and oppression against women.

We start the conversation with Anti-SGBV Activist Rachael Mwikali, discussing what religious norms have to do with SGBV in Kenya; and how faith leaders and their communities can come together.

To mark the 2022 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, The Feminist Sparc Podcast and Swaiba Podcast UNITE to host a two-part series on ending GBV.

Research shows that girls and young women with disabilities may face up to 10 times more violence than women and girls without disabilities. The intersection with disability puts them at further risk of violence that is unique and less detectable: https://blogs.worldbank.org/sustainablecities/five-facts-know-about-violence-against-women-and-girls-disabilities

In this episode, we sit with Senator, singer/songwriter Crystal Asige. Nominated to the 4th Senate in the 13th Parliament of the Republic of Kenya to represent persons with disabilities & Special Interest Groups, Sen. Widely known as VIP (Visually Impaired Person) amongst her following, Sen. Crystal Asige is now good-humouredly known as the 4th Senate’s VIP (Visually Impaired Parliamentarian).

As the first and only senator to cross-cut all three special interest groups, i.e. persons with disabilities; women; and youth; with an additional representation of creatives, Sen. Crystal Asige seeks to push the envelope in creating awareness around the intersectionality of being a young, black-African woman and professional with an invisible disability living in the global South, and challenge the unconscious and entrenched prejudices of people with disabilities.

In this episode, she spotlights how persons with disabilities experience GBV; the importance of inclusivity and accessibility; and how to ensure that we leave no one behind.
