Take A Breath For Posture: An Interview with Mary Massery, PT, DPT, DSc

Got kids with low tone? poor posture? slumped over? speech delays? motor delays? There might be a connection between the diaphragm, their ability to create pressure and their posture. Dr. Mary Massery, PT, DPT, DSc, is known for her multi-system approach to analyzing motor dysfunction; recognizing the interactions between the cardiovascular-pulmonary, musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, integumentary and internal organ systems, and determining which system is the primary deterrent to optimal motor function and which system is likely a consequence of those interactions. This is the primary message of her continuing education presentations and patient consultations. In this episode we discuss the relationship between abdominal pressure and posture, proximal pressure and its role in distal force, using tools such as abdominal binders to support posture and relooking at the diaphragm as a posture regulator. An episode you will enjoy! For pediatric physical therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists and parents of children with special needs. You will never look at the core the same way again.

Have you thought about using a trampoline to achieve therapy goals? Work on posture, reduce hypertonicity, improve hypotonia and more with Rebound Therapy. This interview with Jenn Evans owner of Therabounce will enlighten you and provide an informative interview on the what, how and why of using trampolines in your practice.

TheraBounce is the first organization in Ontario to offer Rebound Therapy and Flexi-Bounce Therapy to children and adults with a range of abilities and needs. Rebound Therapy and Flexi-Bounce Therapy make use of a trampoline or rebounder to provide therapeutic exercise, activities, and recreation. TheraBounce was founded in 2019 by Jenn Evans. Jenn was introduced to Rebound Therapy while completing her Master’s degree in Physiotherapy in Leeds, England. While in Leeds, Jenn became involved with a charity called SNAPS (Special Needs and Parents Support) which delivers Rebound Therapy and hydrotherapy to children with disabilities. Jenn fell in love with Rebound Therapy as she saw the benefits first-hand week in and week out. She was inspired to pursue official training in Rebound Therapy and completed her Rebound Therapy Practitioner qualification through Rebound Therapy International Ltd. In addition to SNAPS, Jenn was exposed to Rebound Therapy while on placement in an Adult Learning Disability service. Following these experiences, Jenn recognized that Rebound Therapy can benefit individuals of all ages and abilities. Jenn is now one of two Rebound Therapy Tutors in Canada and is aiming to grow Rebound Therapy both nationally and internationally!
