SGJ Podcast #504 – Technical Marvels in Gaming

The Long-Forgotten Rendition Verite V-1000, the First 3D Accelerator Card…

Hey friends, welcome to the podcast! First off, let me apologize for the audio. VoiceMeeter — the program I use to typically record our sessions — had a kerfuffle, and so I’m relying on the backup recording from OBS, which is the raw audio. It’ll likely be a little louder than usual, so I apologize for that.

Now, this week, Julie, Thorston, Jacob, and I talk about technical marvels in gaming. For example, my first pick is 3D acceleration, which ushered in a whole new era of graphical amazingness back in the ’90s. We go through a lot of amazing stuff, so we hope you enjoy it.

Our next show, on November 12th, will talk about what we’re thankful for. As always, if you have any questions or comments, please drop them in the comments below, email us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com or hit us up on the forums. Thanks for listening, and enjoy the show!

SGJ Podcast #503 – Check-In

It Tasks Me…

Hey friends, welcome to this week’s show! This week, Spaz, Julie, Thorston, and I have a semi-regular check-in, wherein we talk about what we’re playing and how we’re doing. Since we’re missing Jacob — who was sadly under the weather — it’s a slightly shorter show than usual, but it’s a fun one, and we hope you enjoy it!

On our next show, on October 22nd, we’ll talk about technological marvels in gaming! As always, if you have any questions or comments, please drop them in the comments below, email us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com or hit us up on the forums. Thank you so much for listening, and again, we hope you enjoy the show!

SGJ Podcast #502 – Long Games that Draw You In for the Long Haul

The First Game that Consumed Me for Dozens of Hours

Hey friends, welcome to the show! Sorry this is a day late, yesterday was a real fustercluck! This week, Spaz, Julie, Thorston, Jacob, and I discuss long-haul games, including our first game that we sank dozens, if not hundreds, of hours into. We also explore what it takes for a game to truly capture our attention and much more! It was a pretty fun and lively discussion.

Next time, on October 8th, 2025, we’ll do one of our semi-regular check-ins! As always, if you have any questions or comments, please drop them in the comments below, email us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com or hit us up on the forums. Thank you for listening, and enjoy the show!

SGJ Podcast #501 – Games in Which Direct Combat Isn’t a Factor

It Was Tough to Find an Image Regarding NOT Having Combat…

Hey friends, welcome to this episode of the show! First off, an apology. Restream had technical issues yesterday. For some reason only five seconds of our stream went out, and then stopped. Therefore there’s no YouTube copy of this episode, only the MP3. To their credit, Restream fixed the issue relatively quickly, and hopefully this won’t happen again.

Now, onto the show itself. This week, Spaz, Julie, Thorston, Jacob, and I talk about games in which combat isn’t the primary factor, or even a factor at all. Truth be told, we were thrown off a bit due to the lack of a chat, which we’ve come to rely so much upon, but we made it work and had a fun time. Hopefully you will too.

Our next podcast, scheduled for September 24, 2025, will explore games that draw us in for the long haul. As always, if you have any questions or comments, please drop them in the comments below, email us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com or hit us up on the forums. Thank you for listening, and enjoy the show.

SGJ Podcast #500 – A Celebration of Space Game Development

Game Developers Understand This Stuff, I Certainly Do Not

Hey friends, welcome to this milestone episode! This week, Spaz, Julie, Thorston, and I look back at the seminal games of the last twelve years — since we began the podcast — and talk about how special they, and their developers, are to us. We covered a lot of games, and had a lot of fun reminiscing about the last decade or so of this new wave of space gaming.

Next week, we’ll discuss games in which direct combat is not a factor! As always, if you have any questions or comments, please drop them in the comments below, email us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com or hit us up on the forums. Thank you for listening, and enjoy the show!

SGJ Podcast #499 – Change and Burnout (i.e. Change is Coming to the Podcast)

It Happens to the Best of Us…

Hey friends, two apologies. First, sorry for it being a day late, yesterday got away from me, and secondly, I forgot to hit record on my mixer, so the audio is taken directly from the OBS video. I hope that’s okay.

So, some big news this week. This week, the primary topic is that we’re changing the podcast a little bit, starting with episode 500.

* Firstly, we’re changing the schedule to a bi-monthly (twice a month) schedule. We’ll now be recording on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month. You can see this reflected in the updated calendar. This is to help avoid burnout, which was the other big topic for this episode.

* Secondly, we’re adding a game focus to our show. Now, in the background, we’ll choose a game we can all play, and once we’ve all gotten enough time with it, we’ll be dedicating an episode to discussing that game. Each game is different, so there’s no set amount of time we’ll take to get to a game, but we will get to it. Our first game will be the first game I ever covered here, Space Pirates and ZombiesE!

To summarize, we’ll be moving to a bi-monthly schedule starting with episode 500 on August 27th, 2025, and we’ll be adding a game focus to our show as well. These changes will hopefully help revitalize the show a bit and allow me to charge my mental batteries and get away from the burnout I’ve been feeling.

SO, as stated, on the next show, we’ll take a look back over the time we’ve been running the show (2013 to today) and try to celebrate the developers that have added so much to space gaming over the years. That day I’ll also be hosting a longer morning stream to play all the games submitted for our celebratory game jam!

As always, if you have any questions or comments, please drop them in the comments below, email us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com or hit us up on the forums. Thanks so much for listening, and we hope you enjoy the show!

SGJ Podcast #496 – Free-to-Play Games, Mostly

Strike Fighters is Probably my Favorite Free-to-Play Title Right Now

Hey friends, welcome to this week’s show! This week, Spaz, Julie, Thorston, Jacob, and I talk about free-to-play games…eventually. I, sadly, misunderstood the assignment and thought we were talking about totally free games, not games that are initially free but have a range of buy-in mechanics to help monetize the game. Once we get on topic, it’s a brisk discussion! ;)

Next week, we’ll talk about the beauty of mods, and some of our favorites! As always, if you have any questions or comments, please drop them in the comments below, email us at hail@spacegamejunkie.com or hit us up on the forums. Thank you for listening, and enjoy the show!

Is it me, or is this picture oppressive?

Hey friends, welcome to this week’s episode of the show. I have to apologize for the audio because VoiceMeeter took a dump later in the episode, so I had to resort to the backup recording. This week, Spaz, Julie, Thorston, Jacob, David and I sit down and work with the chat and each other to come up with a bevy of topics for future shows. This is the first time we’ve done this, but I think it went very well, so we’ll definitely do it again when the time comes!

SGJ Podcast #489 – Games Respecting Your Time, or Not

This Game Absolutely Respects Your Time.

Hey friends, welcome to the show. First off, I have to apologize for the audio around the end of the show. VoiceMeeter kept, to use the vernacular, shitting the bed, and every time I reset it, it happened seconds later. No idea why, sorry. Hopefully it doesn’t happen again as VoiceMeeter usually behaves itself. As such, I had to use the audio ripped from the OBS recording for this one. Again, apologies.

This week, Spaz, Julie, Thorston, Jacob, David and I talk about games that respect your time, and what that means. We touch on two main points, saving, and mission/session length. We also talk about games that don’t respect our time at all. It’s a very fun discussion, and we hope you enjoy it.

We also go off on several tangents, so be prepared for that. Overall, it’s a positive show that we hope you’ll find helpful.
