Soul Touched by Dogs
Lauren McKnight - The Truth About Calm, Peaceful Walks (It’s Not What You Think)

Ever felt like every walk with your dog is a tug-of-war—complete with the judgemental stares, unsolicited advice, and the odd “Who’s walking who?” quip from passersby? You’re not alone.

In this episode, I chat with Lauren McKnight, founder of Lead with Luna in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Lauren started as a dog walker and quickly became the go-to person for reactive, strong, or “quirky” dogs that others might avoid. Today, she’s a qualified trainer using only humane, reward-based, science-backed methods—supporting not just the dogs, but the humans holding the other end of the lead.

We talk about why peaceful walks start long before you step outside, how to handle (or ignore) the comments from strangers, and why sometimes the best walk is… no walk at all.

Key Takeaways

Why “perfect dogs” don’t exist—and why that’s a good thing

Every dog has quirks. Even trainers’ dogs aren’t flawless, and that’s what makes them relatable and loveable.

The power of preparation in building trust

Lauren shares the simple but effective steps she took to get clients to trust her with their dogs—long before she had years of experience under her belt.

How to ditch the guilt about skipping walks

Sometimes a short training session indoors, a sniffy game in the garden, or a puzzle toy can be more beneficial than forcing a stressful walk.

Why training should care for the human as much as the dog

Overwhelm, embarrassment, and judgement can hit dog owners hard—Lauren’s approach is as much about supporting the person as it is about training the dog.

From dog walking to dream lifestyle
How Lauren is building her Substack into a way to help more owners, cut through the online noise, and eventually take her work on the road.

Favorite Quote from Lauren

“As long as she’s happy and safe, I have no expectations—she can do whatever she wants within the realms of safety and happiness.”

Dr. Nancy Kay - From Trusting to Questioning: A Vet’s Call for Smarter Dog Advocacy

Speaking for Spot: Becoming the Advocate Your Dog Deserves with Dr. Nancy Kay

What if the biggest difference you could make in your dog’s life isn’t about training or nutrition, but learning to ask better questions?

In this heartfelt, information-packed episode, I sit down with Dr. Nancy Kay - veterinarian, author, and passionate animal welfare advocate - to explore what it really means to "speak for Spot".

From her own story of medical advocacy that sparked a bestselling book, to the eye-opening realities of veterinary culture, to her bold new mission to educate kids about puppy mills, Nancy brings deep expertise, compassion, and a refreshing willingness to challenge outdated norms.

Whether you're navigating a tricky diagnosis or just want to be a more empowered guardian, this conversation will leave you feeling inspired, better informed, and more confident in your role as team captain for your dog’s well-being.

Key Takeaways

- Why “just trust the vet” is outdated advice
Learn why a collaborative, relationship-centered approach to your dog’s health is not only possible but essential.

- How to navigate conflicting advice with clarity and confidence - Why asking for second (or third!) opinions isn’t just okay, it’s smart and necessary.

- What most dog lovers don’t know about spaying and neutering
Timing and method matter more than you think. Nancy shares breed-specific insights and surprising facts that many vets don’t mention.

- The truth about overnight care
Why assuming someone is with your dog at the clinic overnight can lead to heartbreaking consequences, and what to ask instead.

- Educating the next generation about puppy mills
How Nancy’s latest book A Dog Named 647 is using storytelling to empower kids to stand up for animal welfare when adults have failed to do so.

Marilyn Mele - Stop Desensitizing Your Sensitive Dog: A Fresh Perspective

If you’ve ever shared life with a sensitive, traumatized, or reactive dog, you know how heart-wrenching it is to see them struggle. You want to help, but so much of the advice out there feels like a quick fix and often makes things worse.

In this episode, I sit down with Marilyn Mele, founder of Dog Wisdom Workshop and creator of the Emotionally Intelligent Dog Academy, to talk about what truly helps these dogs thrive. With over 40 years of experience teaching people and dogs, Marilyn has a gift for blending science, compassion, and practical tools that work.

We dive into what’s really going on beneath the behavior, and why the usual “desensitization” approach can backfire.

This is an eye-opening conversation that will change the way you look at your sensitive dog.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode:

Why “fixing” the behavior misses the point - and what to focus on instead.

The role of predictability and safety in helping your dog feel secure.

Why freedom of movement matters (and why the leash can make things worse).

The truth about desensitization - why it often fails and what to do instead.

One surprising skill you already have that can transform life with your dog.

My Favorite Quote from Marilyn:

"Feeling safe is something that happens inside the dog—you can’t train it, you can’t talk them out of fear. You have to create an environment where they believe they are safe."

Zazie Todd - The Science of a Happy Dog: What Every Guardian Should Know

What does science say about how to make your dog happy? And how can understanding human psychology help us support our reactive or anxious dogs better?

In this heartfelt and fascinating episode, I’m joined by Zazie Todd, PhD—animal behaviour expert, award-winning author, and creator of the Companion Animal Psychology blog. Zazie shares her journey from academic psychologist to beloved voice in the world of canine (and feline!) wellbeing. Her story—like so many of ours—started with a dog who needed a bit more help than expected.

We talk about how her background in psychology blends with her passion for writing and animal behaviour to create practical, science-backed resources that help people understand and support their dogs (and cats) better. From the overlooked magic of letting dogs sniff, to why a safe space is a must in every home, this conversation is packed with insights that will change how you walk, live, and connect with your dog.

Whether you're dealing with reactivity, a multi-pet household, or simply want to enrich your dog’s life, this one’s for you.

Key takeaways:

- the one behavior science principle every dog guardian is already using (but may not realize)

- Why letting your dog sniff freely is one of the most powerful things you can do for their happiness

- The overlooked importance of safe spaces—and why *not* entering that space matters

- What psychology teaches us about behaviour—human or canine—and how to apply it at home

- The surprising way Zazie’s first book came to life (it started with a blog... and a tweet)

Kathy Callahan & Helen St. Pierre - Old Dog, New Dog: Supporting Your Aging Best Friend and Welcoming a New One

What happens when you bring a playful puppy into a home shared with an aging dog?

Is it a heartwarming tale of intergenerational friendship—or a recipe for resentment and overwhelm?

In this deeply insightful and refreshingly honest conversation, I’m joined by Kathy Callahan and Helen St. Pierre, authors of Old Dog, New Dog: A Guide to Supporting Your Aging Best Friend and Welcoming a New One.

We explore the emotional, practical, and soulful layers of combining puppy energy with senior dog wisdom—and what it really takes to make that transition harmonious for everyone involved.

Helen brings her experience from running a senior animal sanctuary and navigating end-of-life care with grace and compassion. Kathy shares her joyful yet grounded perspective on puppyhood—why it often gets a bad rap, and how to set yourself and your new pup up for success.

This episode is packed with laughter, raw truth, and beautiful reminders that dogs—young and old—have so much to teach us about living fully and letting go gently.

🐶 In This Episode, You'll Discover:

  • Why a peaceful senior-puppy combo takes more than wishful thinking—and what factors to consider before making the leap.
  • How to assess your older dog’s bandwidth, physically and emotionally, before bringing a new dog into the mix.
  • The truth about grief, quality of life, and making end-of-life decisions—and why "they'll tell you when it's time" isn’t always true.
  • Why managing expectations (and having a few good gates and stuffed Toppls!) makes all the difference.
  • The one crucial mistake even experienced dog lovers make when bringing home a puppy to an aging dog.
  • Why your puppy will almost always choose your older dog over you—and how to prepare for that dynamic.

Nora Lenz - Your Dog’s Dinner Might Be the Problem (and the Cure)

What If the Food You Feed Your Dog Is the Root Cause (and the Cure) for Their Illness?

In this episode, I’m joined by Nora Lenz, creator of Rotational MonoFeeding (RMF), to explore a radical – and radically simple – idea: that feeding dogs according to their biological needs not only prevents disease but can actually reverse it.

Nora’s journey started back in the 80s when she studied human nutrition and discovered the powerful connection between food, health, and emotional well-being. It didn’t take long for her to apply those insights to her own dogs and the results? Nothing short of transformative.

We talk about how the pet food industry (and, sadly, often the veterinary system) pushes kibble, chemicals, and confusion – when in fact, the body knows how to heal. It just needs the right conditions.

If you’ve ever wondered what’s really in your dog’s bowl and how it might be affecting their health, this episode is a must-listen.

🦴 In This Conversation, We Explore:
Why mixing meat and plants in one meal disrupts digestion for both dogs and humans

What “rotational mono feeding” is and how it mimics what wild dogs eat in nature

How a dog’s vibrant health depends on removing the causes of disease – not adding more remedies

The mistake most dog guardians make when transitioning away from kibble – and how to do it safely

Why symptoms like skin issues, digestive problems, or even kidney disease can often be resolved through diet alone

How Nora’s feeding model turns conventional wisdom upside down – and empowers you to stop relying on the sick pet industry

💬 Favorite Quote:
“The beauty is, once you remove the cause, the body does the healing. You don’t need substances. You don’t need remedies. You just need to get out of the way.” – Nora Lenz

24:58 The Role of Vets and the Pet Food Industry
33:27 Conclusion and Final Thoughts

About Nora Lenz
Nora Lenz is the creator of Rotational MonoFeeding (RMF), a feeding philosophy that mirrors the natural diet of wild dogs and prioritizes biologically appropriate nutrition to prevent and reverse disease. She began her journey in the 1980s, studying human nutrition, and soon turned her attention to the animals in her care.

Through her website, book, and vibrant Facebook community, Nora shares powerful – and often eye-opening – insights into how food affects health and why the standard pet care advice might be doing more harm than good. Her mission? To give dog and cat guardians the tools to step away from dependency on medication, vet bills, and commercial food… and reclaim true health for their animals.

Meghan Butt - Nervous System Wisdom: The Healing Power of Attuned Touch for You and Your Dog

What happens when your “I’ll just walk dogs for a while” job turns into a life’s calling? That’s exactly what happened to East London-based Behaviour Coach Meghan Butt, and in this episode, we explore how her deep commitment to healing - both her own and her canine clients’  led her to a trauma-informed, body-based approach to working with reactive dogs.

We talk about the powerful connection between posture and emotion (for dogs and humans alike), and why helping your dog feel safe and balanced starts with understanding the nervous system, not obedience drills. Meghan also introduces us to Tellington Touch, a beautiful combination of bodywork, groundwork, and observation that shifts both behaviour and relationship.

Whether you live with a reactive dog or just want to build a more attuned, trust-filled bond, this conversation is full of aha moments you won’t want to miss.

Key Takeaways:

Why reactivity is often rooted in nervous system dysregulation, not disobedience or defiance.

How “attunement” forms the bridge between your state and your dog’s.

What Tellington Touch is, and how tiny shifts in posture can create big emotional changes.

How Meghan’s concept of “constructive cuddles” can help reframe how we touch, hold, and support our dogs.

Why the way you show up (tense, calm, rushed, grounded) matters more than you think.

Soul Touched by Dogs
Debbie Sheridan - There Are No Bad Dogs, Just Unheard Souls: What “Aggressive” Dogs Are Really Telling Us

Have you ever been told your dog was “aggressive”?

That you needed to show them who’s boss, or worse, that pain was the only way to gain control?

In this soul-stirring episode of Soul Touched by Dogs, I sit down with certified canine life coach Debbie Sheridan, whose journey from social work to dog advocacy is as powerful as it is healing.

It all began with two terrified shelter pups - Fitzy and Stella - who turned Debbie’s world upside down. When the advice she received from traditional trainers felt cruel and senseless, she trusted her instincts, dug deep into the science of dog behavior, and never looked back.

Today, Debbie works with fearful, misunderstood dogs - those often mislabeled as “aggressive” - and the people who love them.

In this conversation, we explore what dogs are really trying to say when they act out, how pain-based tools damage trust, and why the real work of dog training starts with us.

If you’ve ever had your heart broken by a dog’s fear, or questioned whether there’s a better way, this episode is your answer.

🔥 What We Talk About:

  • Why Debbie left a career in human counseling to work with dogs
  • The myth of the “aggressive” dog, and what’s really going on
  • How traditional training methods can traumatize both dogs and their humans
  • Why fear-based tools like prong and shock collars do more harm than good
  • The emotional moment a client realized what her dog had endured
  • How to build trust through connection, not control
  • Why obedience isn't the goal, and what to focus on instead

Debbie Sheridan began her career in social work, but it was two fragile rescue pups who led her to her true calling. After seeing the damage caused by force-based training methods, she chose a new path—becoming a certified canine life coach focused on helping people understand and support their dogs with empathy and kindness. Today, she specializes in working with fearful dogs, helping their humans see past the labels to the soul that’s waiting to be heard.

Bio: Dr Isla Fishburn has been working with, exploring and understanding life with our canine friends for over 15 years. She began this journey as a Zoologist before gaining a PhD in Conservation Biology. Wanting to explore wolf conversation she began to work with captive wolves for three years whilst at the same time learning about domestic dogs. It was during this time that she recognised there was a need to explain and teach how to support our dogs as biological ecosystems and their individual wellness as well as being sources of consciousness. To support a canine guardian to begin this journey with their dog, she created her canine wellness course before studying, exploring and becoming a shamanic practitioner, channeller and teacher of soul consciousness, ceremonies, healing and connecting with the unseen – the infinite consciousness. Isla serves as a canine wellness intuitive, shamanic practitioner and channeller of animal consciousness and spirit consciousness. Isla explores how to support an animal guardian in to their soul evolution with their animal friend and heal together. Isla holds many offerings for an animal guardian to explore for themselves, for their animal friend or both to co-exist from this place of soul connection, conversation and healing in this life and in the transition of their animal friend, which Isla has a keen interest in teaching. You can explore more about her offerings and work through her business, Kachina Canine. Grisha Stewart - Giving Reactive Dogs the Lead: How to Teach Social Skills to Dogs

What do mathematics and misbehaving mutts have in common?

This week on the Soul Touched by Dogs podcast, I sit down with Grisha Stewart, a self-described behaviour nerd who made the leap from math lecturer to world-renowned dog trainer. Yep, from numbers to nosework 😛

Grisha created BAT (Behavior Adjustment Training), a beautifully intuitive method that helps reactive and anxious dogs find calm - not through bribery or correction, but by giving them agency. It’s training as a gentle dance, not a tug-of-war.

We talk about the heartbreak of having a dog who “doesn’t behave” in public, the magic of working with a dog’s instincts (instead of muscling against them), and why the real secret sauce often lies in helping humans breathe, pause, and trust.

You’ll also hear how her soulmate dog, Peanut, taught her more than any seminar could, and why the path to healing sometimes involves therapy dogs, awkward cabinets, and a few emotional meltdowns (from both species).

If you’ve ever felt judged at the end of a leash, or wondered if your dog was just “too much”, this one’s for you. Come for the insights, stay for the laughs, and leave feeling a little more seen.

🐾 Hit play, and let’s explore the softer side of behaviour science.

I'm best known among dog trainers for developing Behavior Adjustment Training (BAT), a humane, trauma-informed, attachment-informed technique for dog aggression, frustration, and fear. I also love teaching all kinds of life skills, so this online school covers a lot of different subjects.

Through my international dog seminars, DVDs, books, and my in-person and online training schools, I've helped well over 200,000 dogs and their people thrive.

Soul Touched by Dogs
Welcome to the Soul Touched by Dogs Podcast, the show for dog lovers who see dogs not as toys or tools, but as wise souls worth our respect and care. The 20-minute interviews with "Pawsome Humans", people who do great work for dogs and their people, you're listening to here on the podcast are one of the ways we celebrate the human-canine connection and advocate for holistic approaches to canine health, well-being and education.
