Hi! My name is Zoya Acuña, and I am a senior. At 7, I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis (UC), an Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). This diagnosis was hard and scary. But, I believe it is important to begin conversations about IBD that aim to understand more about the pathogenesis and how to best support patients suffering from both IBD and mental health disorders. So, I created this podcast where we will hear from patients, a psychologist, and a gastrointestinal doctor to allow us to learn about signs, symptoms, and management techniques for IBD. https://sites.google.com/view/soyouhaveibd

So you have IBD?
IBD and Mental Health with Dr. Lauren Gent

Welcome to the fourth episode of So you have IBD? This episode focuses on the connections between IBD and Mental Health, as I speak with clinical psychologist, Dr. Lauren Gent.

As mentioned, here are definitions for ACT, RFT, and CBT:

ACT: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. This is a psychological intervention that uses acceptance and mindfulness techniques, and commitment and behavioral change in order to increase psychological flexibility.

RFT: Relational Frame Therapy. It argues that humans can create connections between concepts, words, and images.

CBT: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It has proven to be successful for a variety of diagnoses including depression, eating disorders, alcohol and drug use, and more. The treatment focuses on changing thinking patterns, by reevaluating things and looking at them in a different light. It could also use ideas like facing your fears, rather than avoiding them.

So you have IBD?
Welcome to So you have IBD?

Hi everyone! I am Zoya Acuña and welcome to my podcast. I am currently a senior in high school, and I love playing sports, baking, and swimming in the ocean.

I decided to make a podcast to spread awareness about Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), and its connections to mental health disorders. I hope you are able to learn, understand, and share. I believe it is important to begin conversations about Inflammatory Bowel Disease that aim to understand the development and how to best support patients suffering from both IBD and mental health disorders.

This is a 6 part series where you will hear from patients, a psychologist, and a gastrointestinal doctor as they give their input on my research questions: What is Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)? What are the signs, symptoms, and disease management techniques? How is IBD connected to Mental Health Disorders?

Thank you for listening & I hope you enjoy!
