While governing institutions and leaders have not always embraced democratic values, universities have in many ways endured as places of free expression and exchange of ideas. In this way, they are more than educational institutions: they are havens for freedom and the pursuit of knowledge, offering a foothold for societies striving to grow and improve. Yet, despite their enduring strengths, universities are facing significant challenges in today’s divisive climate. How can we ensure that they continue to fulfill their crucial role in promoting and safeguarding democratic values and inspiring democratic change? The SNF Dialogues opens this vital discussion with experts on these questions but also, most importantly, students themselves, exploring how to ensure that universities meet the moment and do their part to carry the torch of democracy forward. On May 29, 2024, SNF Dialogues, in collaboration with the University of Delaware, hosted a public dialogue at The Queen theater in Wilmington, Delaware, on the impact of political marketing and the commodification of politics in democracy. SNF Dialogues featured two panel discussions—one from an academic perspective and another on the professional practice of political marketing—as well as a keynote address by Valerie Biden Owens, the first woman in the United States to have managed a presidential campaign.

The SNF Dialogues hosted a public speaking event that underscores libraries’ vital role in promoting civic engagement and strengthening democracy, scheduled for April 30th at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library in New York. The discussion was moderated by Anna-Kynthia Bousdoukou, Managing Director of the SNF Dialogues, and the main speakers were Dr. Tony W. Marx, President and CEO of the New York Public Library (NYPL), and Dr. Ares Kalandides, Urban scholar and Academic Advisor at New York University, Berlin. To bridge the ancient wisdom of the legendary Library of Alexandria with its contemporary relevance, SNF Dialogues engages in a conversation with the director of the current library.

While many of us associate libraries with brick-and-mortar buildings in our neighborhoods, there exists a remarkable world of mobile public libraries that extend their reach to remote rural areas, transcending geographical boundaries and socioeconomic disparities. In this episode, we venture from Colombia to Northern Greece, uncovering the stories of mobile public libraries that are transforming the communities they visit. These mobile libraries not only bring books, but also foster learning opportunities, bridging gaps and enriching lives regardless of location or background.

In the second episode, we delve into the evolution of libraries, tracing their journey from exclusive sanctuaries for the elite to commonly managed spaces shaped by and for a group of citizens—the emergence of what is often referred to as the "commons." Confronting the constraints of class, gender, and racial divides of the past, libraries are now viewed in their role as centers for community engagement. They serve as catalysts for societal transformation, fostering community-building, and offering avenues for emancipation and democracy even in the face of societal upheaval.

Child psychiatrist and Founding President as well as Medical Director of the Child Mind Institute in New York Dr. Harold S. Koplewicz has joined three pandemic-era Dialogues discussions related to mental health. George Petasis and George Giannakopoulos have spent their lives working on artificial intelligence systems. Additionally, they are the people who trained two generative AI models just for us to have a live chat with on stage, for the SNF Dialogues “Humanity-AI Symbiosis” event during the SNF Nostos 2021. In fact, someone could say that we tried to do then what the entire world is trying to do today with ChatGPT. Two years later, the frenzy over the capabilities and risks of AI development and its incursion into our daily lives is more relevant than ever. Therefore, we called on George Petasis and George Giannakopoulos, to unpack what is going on with ChatGPT and AI today. In September 2021, during the SNF Dialogues event “Climate Change – Part 2” we learned about how climate change is affecting Antarctica’s delicate ecosystem and melting its ice sheets. Since then, massive floods, megafires and extreme weather events across the globe have rarely left the headlines, making us wonder – how are Antarctica’s ice sheets holding up? Paleoclimatologist Carlo Barbante, director of Italy’s Institute of Polar Sciences, professor of Ca΄Foscari University in Venice and Ice Memory Foundation vice-chairman, has been going on expeditions to Antarctica for 30 years and has witnessed the accelerating changes first-hand. In April 2020, Yale University Sterling Professor of Social and Natural Science Nicholas Christakis took part in the first SNF Dialogues webcast “Waiting to Connect”. It was the time of the first coronavirus lockdowns, during which the whole world was hoping to reconnect. Back then, Professor Christakis said that it would take two to four years for ‘normal’ to return, while some societal norms might never come back. Almost three years later, we revisit the topic in order to reconnect in the post-pandemic era. Σχεδόν τρία χρόνια μετά, επανερχόμαστε στο ίδιο θέμα, με σκοπό να επανασυνδεθούμε στη μετά Covid-19 εποχή. Την Τετάρτη 8 Νοεμβρίου 2017, πραγματοποίηθηκε η πρώτη εκδήλωση της σειράς Διάλογοι στο Κέντρο Πολιτισμού Ίδρυμα Σταύρος Νιάρχος, όπου παρουσιάστηκαν οι νέες δωρεές του ΙΣΝ που θα υλοποιηθούν το προσεχές διάστημα σε συνεργασία με οργανισμούς στην Ελλάδα και το εξωτερικό. Στην πρώτη εκδήλωση της σειράς, το ΙΣΝ παρουσίασε ορισμένες από τις πρόσφατες δωρεές του, ανά τομέα δράσης, με βίντεο και συζήτηση επί σκηνής με τους εκπροσώπους των οργανισμών που έλαβαν τις νέες δωρεές, αλλά και με άμεσα επωφελούμενους αυτών. Ενδεικτικά παρουσιάστηκαν οι δωρεές προς το Σύνδεσμο Ελλήνων Προπονητών Καλαθοσφαίρισης, την Εναλλακτική Σκηνή της Εθνικής Λυρικής Σκηνής, την Εταιρία Προστασίας Πρεσπών, το 401 Γενικό Στρατιωτικό Νοσοκομείο Αθηνών, καθώς και δωρεές που στηρίζουν προγράμματα υποτροφιών και δια βίου εκπαίδευσης. Η συζήτηση κινήθηκε γύρω από τους άξονες των συνεργειών στην τοπική κοινωνία, τη μεταφορά βέλτιστων πρακτικών, τη σημασία της δια βίου εκπαίδευσης, τη σπουδαιότητα της προσβασιμότητας σε υπηρεσίες υγειονομικής φροντίδας αλλά και στην τέχνη, ενώ στην έναρξη της εκδήλωσης τα στελέχη του Τμήματος Διαχείρισης Δωρεών του ΙΣΝ μοιράστηκαν ιστορίες από την καθημερινή τους επαφή με οργανισμούς που δραστηριοποιούνται σε όλη την Ελλάδα και διεθνώς. Στο δεύτερο σκέλος της εκδήλωσης, ο Πρόεδρος του ΙΣΝ, κύριος Ανδρέας Δρακόπουλος, καλωσόρισε επί σκηνής τον Υπουργό Υγείας, κύριο Ανδρέα Ξανθό, και τον Αναπληρωτή Υπουργό Υγείας, κύριο Παύλο Πολάκη, για μία συζήτηση αναφορικά με την πρόσφατη ανακοίνωση του ΙΣΝ, να διαθέσει δωρεές άνω των €200 εκατομμυρίων για την περαιτέρω ενίσχυση του τομέα της Υγείας στην Ελλάδα, με έργα υποδομών και ενίσχυσης της εκπαίδευσης. Τους Διαλόγους επιμελείται και συντονίζει η Άννα-Κύνθια Μπουσδούκου.

Μάρτιος 2018. Κατά την έναρξη της εκδήλωσης ο Πρόεδρος του ΙΣΝ, Ανδρέας Δρακόπουλος, απηύθυνε σύντομο χαιρετισμό καλωσορίζοντας τους παρευρισκόμενους. Στην ομιλία του, ο κ. Δρακόπουλος ανέφερε, μεταξύ άλλων: «Διάλογος: στις εποχές που ζούμε, απαραίτητος για να μπορέσουμε να αντιμετωπίσουμε τις χιλιάδες προκλήσεις που αντιμετωπίζουμε είτε σαν άτομα είτε σαν μέλη μιας ανθρώπινης κοινωνίας. Μόνο με συνεχή διάλογο, που θα βασίζεται στον αλληλοσεβασμό και την αλληλοκατανόηση, μπορούμε να προχωρήσουμε μπροστά είτε αντιμετωπίζοντας αντίξοες συνθήκες είτε απλά παρακολουθώντας τις εξελίξεις γύρω μας, αλλιώς είναι θέμα χρόνου μέχρι η τεχνητή νοημοσύνη να μας καταπιεί όλους ανεξαιρέτως. Μόνο με τοv διάλογο θα μπορέσουμε σαν ανθρώπινο είδος να εξελίξουμε την συναισθηματική μας νοημοσύνη (EQ), βασικό ανθρώπινο προτέρημα. Και ο μονόλογος ακόμη, παρόλο το έμφυτο στερεότυπο να μην θεωρείται και ό,τι προτιμότερο, καμιά φορά είναι ένας απλός διάλογος με τον εαυτό μας, απαραίτητος και αυτός για να γίνουμε καλύτεροι στο διάλογο με τους συνανθρώπους μας…». Το έναυσμα για τους «Διαλόγους» έδωσαν ερωτήματα σχετικά με το πως γεννιούνται τα στερεότυπα και ποιος ορίζει τι είναι «διαφορετικό», τι κάνει τον πρόσφυγα, «ξένο» και πως μπορεί το φύλο ή ο σεξουαλικός προσανατολισμός να ορίσει τα κοινωνικά δικαιώματα, ποιος και με ποιο τρόπο μπορεί να παρέμβει στην Τέχνη, λογοκρίνοντας την και γιατί μία μορφή αναπηρίας μπορεί να οδηγήσει σε περιορισμένη προσβασιμότητα και κατ’ επέκταση σε αποκλεισμό. Τα ερωτήματα αποτέλεσαν την αφετηρία για τη συζήτηση που προσπάθησε να ανιχνεύσει και να επαναπροσδιορίσει τα στερεότυπα και τις κοινωνικές αναπαραστάσεις για το «διαφορετικό», μέσα από μαρτυρίες και εμπειρίες ανθρώπων από διαφορετικές προσωπικές αφετηρίες που έχουν οι ίδιοι βρεθεί αντιμέτωποι με τις στερεοτυπικές διακρίσεις και τον κοινωνικό στιγματισμό. Η Nujeen Mustafa, η νεαρή πρόσφυγας που διέσχισε τον μακρύ δρόμο από τη Συρία σε αναπηρικό αμαξίδιο και έγινε σύμβολο δύναμης και ελπίδας φτάνοντας στις ακτές της Λέσβου, μίλησε για το πως βίωσε και βιώνει αυτό το μακρύ και δύσκολο «ταξίδι» ως νεαρή κοπέλα, πρόσφυγας, άτομο με αναπηρία. «O «φιλοξενούμενος» είναι μέρος της διαδικασίας αποδοχής ή μη αποδοχής. Πιστεύω ότι είναι λογικό οι άνθρωποι να φοβούνται το άγνωστο, το ανεξερεύνητο, κάτι για το οποίο δεν έχουν ιδέα […]. Ο φόβος, η απόρριψη, ο δισταγμός απέναντι στον «άλλον» είναι κάτι που περίμενα», δήλωσε η Nujeen και συνέχισε λέγοντας πως «Προσωπικά, απολαμβάνω τα στερεότυπα και τις ταμπέλες που μου αποδίδουν, διότι μετά απολαμβάνω να βλέπω τις αντιδράσεις τους όταν τα καταρρίπτω». Στην παραγωγή στερεοτυπικών εικόνων και τις διακρίσεις που επιφέρουν, οδηγώντας σε αποκλεισμό και απομόνωση, αναφέρθηκε και η Ιωάννα-Μαρία Γκέρτσου, αντλώντας από τη δική της εμπειρία και δράση ως πρόεδρος της Ελληνικής Σχολής Σκύλων-Οδηγών Τυφλών «Λάρα» και ψυχολόγος στο Γ.Ν. Παίδων «Η Αγία Σοφία». Όπως είπε η ίδια κατά τη διάρκεια της εκδήλωσης, «ο μόνος τρόπος να ξεπεράσουμε τα στερεότυπα είναι η αποδοχή πρώτα του εαυτού μας […]. Οι στερεοτυπικές ιδέες και σκέψεις, βολεύουν τον κοινό νου αφού του προκαλούν με ευκολία πολύ «όμορφα» συναισθήματα, κλείνοντάς τον στο καβούκι του και παρεμποδίζοντας την εξέλιξή του ώστε να δει πραγματικότητα όπως είναι και να αποδεχτεί τον άλλον έτσι όπως είναι». Τους ΔΙΑΛΟΓΟΥΣ επιμελείται και συντονίζει η Άννα-Κύνθια Μπουσδούκου.
