Sneaky Dragon Listening Party
Sneaky Dragon Listening Party – Ep. 68

Hello, partygoers!

We received a really nice gift here in the old Listening Party rumpus room this week. Partygoer Chris Roberts wrote a wonderful song celebrating this very podcast. Mary and David couldn’t have been more pleased (and there may have been some tears, but that’s all were going to say about it). Chris also made a video to accompany the song and we invite you all to check it out – it’s lots of fun!

Now back to your regular podcast already in progress. This week Mary and David go tropic! As in, Tropicália!

Yes, for listener Mike Roth’s final mixtape, Dave interpreted his request for bossa nova as a request for the wild and provocative music of political protest of the late Sixties/early Seventies in Brazil. Is that what he wanted? Was he pleased to get an hour plus of Portuguese-language craziness? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So join us in the rumpus room where we’re listening to:

* Os Mutantes – “Panis et circenses” – Os Mutantes, 1968 – 12:57* Caetano Veloso – “Alegria, alegria” – Caetano Veloso, 1968 – 46:27* Gal Costa – “Mamãe coragem” – Tropicália, 1968* Tom Zé – “Dói” – Estudando o Samba, 1976 – 1:29:30* Gilberto Gil – “Sai do sereno” – Expresso 2222, 1972 – 1:36:15* Rita Lee – “De novo aqui meu bom José” – Hoje é o Primeiro Dia do Resto da Sua Vida, 1972 – 1:43:37* Marcos Valle – “O cafona” – Garra, 1971 – 1:52:59* Jorge Ben – “Fio maravilho” – Ben, 1972 – 1:58:47* Caetano Veloso – “Os árgonautos” – Caetano Veloso, 1969 – 2:01:28* Os Mutantes – “Dom quixote” – Mutantes, 1969 – 2:14:25* Gal Costa – “Meu nom é Gal” – Gal, 1969 – 2:22:43

Also spinning on the old Victrola:

* O’Seis – “Apocalipse” – Continental Records single b-side to “Suicida”, 1966 – 29:54* Gilberto Gil –“Domingo no parque” – Gilberto Gil, 1967 – 41:47* Caetano Veloso – “Samba em paz” – RCA Victor single b/w “Cavaleiro”, 1965 – 1:01:27* Gal Costa and Caetano Veloso – “Coraçâo vagabundo” – Domingo, 1967 – 1:05:15* Maria Bethânia and Gal Costa – “Sol negro” – Maria Bethânia, 1965 – 1:17:09* Gal Costa – “Sim, foi voce” – RCA Victor Records, 1965 – 1:22:22* Gal Costa – “Objeto sim, objeto non” – Gal, 1969* Chris Roberts – “The Ballad of Sneaky Dragon Listening Party” – self-release, 2021

Here is some footage of Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso being interviewed and then Gil performing “Domingo no parque” at the 3rd Festival of Popular Brazilian Music in 1967:

Here is Jorge Ben performing live in 1972 – the first song is “Fio maravilho” and is well worth a watch:

Hello, partygoers, and welcome back to party headquarters. As always, we appreciate visitors to the Listening Party rumpus room!

This week, Mary and her dad tackle side two of our final novelty song mix tape, and Mary questions her dad’s rather broad definition of a novelty song. Despite some complaints at the beginning of this series, it wasn’t so bad, was it?

This week Dave and Mary took a turn down the path marked “Novelty Songs” so we can listen to some songs that Dave has deemed novelty songs. He attempts to explain his criteria, but we’re still not convinced. But, while you can question their novelty, you cannot question their quality!

Sneaky Dragon Listening Party
Sneaky Dragon Listening Party – Ep. 59

Hello, partygoers, and welcome back to the Listening Party rumpus room where the door is always open and the music is always playing.

Dave re-e-e-e-ally enjoyed putting together the music for this bi-week’s show. It was lots of fun making a brand new mixtape, and it was lots of fun choosing twenty of his favourite songs from 2020.

We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did!

As discussed on the show, this compilation had to be spread across two CDs because modern music is so ding-dang long, so we have pretended it’s an actual two record set and divided it up accordingly. Of course, on the actual records it’s divided into sides 1 and 3 on one record and sides 2 and 4 on the other so you can put them on your record stacker!

Here’s what we listened to this week:

Side One:

* White Denim – “I Don’t Understand Rock and Roll” – World as a Waiting Room, 2020 (May) – 9:48* Arbouretum – “How Deep It Goes” – Let It All In, 2020 (March) – 26:34* Songhoy Blues – “Barre” – Optimisme, 2020 (October) – 44:30* Nap Eyes – “Though I Wish I Could” – Snapshot of a Beginner, 2020 (March) – 54:07* Damien Jurado – “Oachoa” – What’s New, Tomboy, 2020 (April) – 1:03:39

Side Two

* Nada Surf – “Looking for You” – Never Not Together, 2020 (November) – 1:10:33* Bonny Light Horseman – “The Rover” – Bonny Light Horseman, 2020 (January) – 1:23:33* Brigid Dawson and the Mothers Network – “The Fool” – Ballet of Apes, 2020 (May) – 1:29:06* Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever – “The Second of the First” – Sideways to New Italy, 2020 (June) – 1:37:07* OOIOO – “Kawasemi Ah” – nijimusi, 2020 (January) – 1:49:39

Side Three

* The Jayhawks – “Living in a Bubble” – XOXO, 2020 (July) – 2:04:27* Cabane (ft. “Bonnie” Prince Billy and Kate Stables) – “Sangokaku” – Grande Est la Maison, 2020 (March) – 2:10:38* Waxahatchee – “Can’t Do Much” – Saint Cloud, 2020 (March) – 2:18:09* Jackie Lynn – “Odessa” – Jacqueline, 2020 (April) – 2:23:50* Blitzen Trapper – “Bardo’s Light (Ouija Ouija)” – Holy Smokes Future Jokes, 2020 (September) – 2:36:41

Side Four

* Stephen Malkmus – “Xian Man” – Traditional Techniques, 2020 (March) – 2:42:19* Sufjan Stevens and Lowell Brams – “The Runaround” – Aporia, 2020 (March) – 2:52:20* This Is the Kit – “Off Off On” – Off Off On, 2020 (October) – 3:04:06* Samantha Crain – “Little Bits” – A Small Death, 2020 (July) – 3:09:44* Protomartyr – “Bridge and Crown” – Ultimate Success Today, 2020 (July) – 3:16:52

Thanks for listening.

Dept. of Corections:We think Dave misspoke and stated that the White Denim album was recorded in three months. The actual challenge was to write, play, record, and mix it in 30 days.

Dept. of CLARIFICATIONS:So older forms of Japanese music – specifically folk songs and early popular music – used a pentatonic scale called the yo scale. This is a scale that contains no minor notes – best demonstrated on a piano by playing only the black keys.

Dept. of Cool Sounds:Would you like to listen to Dave’s Top 20 for ’20 whilst you walk around or do dishes or whatever it is that you get up to? Well, follow this link right now!

A Merry Christmas and best of the season to you, dear partygoers!

Last year, friend of the show (and occasional unwitting musical contributor), David M. dropped by the rumpus room to play a selection of his favourite Christmas songs. Well, Covid put paid to any ideas in that direction so it fell to David, our resident Grinch, to pull together a Christmas mix of his own…

So, once again, please join us in the Yuletide rumpus room. We’ve trimmed the tree with bingle balls, who-floo fluff, and bizel blicks! Amidst the woo hoo boo bricks, dangling pantukas and that pile of panpunas by the beanbag chair, we’ve got a great selection of seasonal sides to make this holiday season go down easy!

So nog that egg and enjoy some holiday cheer!

Sneaky Dragon Listening Party
Sneaky Dragon Listening Party – Ep. 53 – Part 2

Hello, partygoers!

Welcome to Part 2 of the Listening Party’s Halloween Spooooooktacular!!!! We know it’s more in line with American Thanksgiving, but due to some bad planning – like when a character returns to the haunted house at night instead of in broad daylight – we ended up with a show that outstayed its welcome more than the demon in The Exorcist. So – like the neck of a teen who’s just had sex – we severed the show into two parts, and this week we present the grisly remains.

Once again, our remit: To counter Sneaky Dragon co-host Ian Boothby’s claim that there is only one Halloween song and that song is Bobby “Boris” Pickett’s “Monster Mash”, we decided to put together a selection of Halloween-themed or Halloween-adjacent tunes for your next Halloween party or summer camp bloodbath! Also, we read and respond to a bunch of your great comments.

This episode we are spinning:

* The Diamonds – “Batman, Wolfman, Frankenstein or Dracula” – Mercury Records 45” b/w “Walkin’ the Stroll”, 1959 – 16:05* The Five Blobs – “The Blob” – Columbia 45” b/w “Saturday Night in Tiajuana (sic)”, 1958 – 24:16* Bobby Please and the Pleasers – “The Monster” – Jaime Records 45” b/w “The Switch”, 1959 – 39:43* Joe South – “The Purple People Eater Meets the Witch Doctor” – National Recording Corporation 45” b/w “My Fondest Memories”, 1958 – 46:03* October Country – “My Girlfriend Is a Witch” – Epic Records 45” b/w “I Just Don’t Know”, 1968 – 56:42* Hans Conreid and Alice Pearce – “The Invisible Man” – Monster Rally, 1959 – 1:05:55* Bill Buchanan – “Beware” – United Artists 45” b-side to “The Night Before Halloween”, 1962 – 1:21:51* Tarantula Ghoul and Her Gravediggers – “Graveyard Rock” – Meadows Records 45” b-side to “King Kong”, 1959 – 1:30:08* Little Tibia and the Fibias – “The Mummy” – Mad Monster Party? (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), 1998 (1967) – 1:49:54* Dr. Shock – “Let There Be Fright” – Cougar Records 45” b-side to “The Bloody”, 1970 – 2:00:02

Also playing on the old Victrola:

* Cat Stevens – “Portobello Road” – Matthew and Son, 1967 – 30:42

Fangs for listening!

We’re not sure if it’s a coincidence or some sort of meddling deviltry, but The Buoys’ “Timothy” was discussed on the latest episode of One Hit Wonderland:
