Season 10 Episode 6 w Dr Spencer Roberts on sleep and mild traumatic brain injuries
In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Spencer Roberts, a researcher at Deakin University, to dive deep into his recent paper:“A systematic review and meta-analysis of sleep following mild traumatic brain injury: A synthesis of the literature according to age and time since injury.” Together, we unpack the complexities of sleep disruption after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and what the latest science is telling us.   Episode Highlights – What We Discuss What the systematic review investigates and the range of populations it covers. Who is at risk of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and the difficulties in identifying these individuals. What defines a mild traumatic brain injury and how mTBI is diagnosed. The role of instrumented mouthguards in improving concussion detection and data collection. The difference between objective and subjective sleep measures and why objective data is difficult to collect. Whether sleep is impacted by mTBI – the central question addressed in the review. How the data was categorised for the review. Key findings from the meta-analysis, and how the team handled the complexity of synthesising multiple studies. The challenges in identifying the cause of sleep disturbances post-mTBI and measuring them accurately. Reflections on the scientific process – the ups, downs, and unexpected joys of research. Major takeaways for researchers and clinicians, including opportunities for future work in concussion and sleep research.   This episode is a must for those with an interest in concussion, sleep, and recovery outcomes. Dr. Spencer Roberts is focused on characterising athletes' sleep behaviours, and examining the value of sleep for mitigating the risks and consequences of sport-related concussion.   Research Paper: A systematic review and meta-analysis of sleep following mild traumatic brain injury: A synthesis of the literature according to age and time-since-injury - PubMed Deakin Profile: Spencer Roberts Profile | Deakin University LinkedIn: Dr. Spencer Roberts

Season 9, Episode 8 w Dr Serena Bauducco: Do Electronic Devices Impact Sleep? Maybe Not!
In this episode, I talk with my friend Serena Bauducco from Sweden, by way of Italy. In this episode, we discuss Serena’s latest paper, which was published in Sleep Medicine Reviews. Serena Bauducco, Meg Pillion, Kate Bartel, Chelsea Reynolds, Michal Kahn, Michael Gradisar, “A bidirectional model of sleep and technology use: A theoretical review of How much, for whom, and which mechanisms” Read the full paper here https://doi.org/10.1016/j.smrv.2024.101933 This study and its findings are going to be challenging for some people. As lately, a narrative vilifying and blaming electronic devices for sleep problems has emerged. In this work, Serena has stepped back and taken a holistic, scientific and non-biased view of the data and unpacked the nuances of this relationship. Serena Bauducco is a researcher in the psychology department. She earned her PhD in 2017 with a thesis entitled “Adolescents’ sleep in a 24/7 society: Epidemiology and prevention.” She finished her international postdoc (Vetenskapsrådet) at Flinders University in South Australia in 2023. Serena’s research focuses on the factors that may exacerbate or improve adolescents’ sleep, the relationship between sleep and mental health, and the potential of school-based interventions to improve teenagers´ sleep health and mental well-being. She is particularly interested in the link between technology use and sleep and how peers and parents may affect both behaviours. In her research, she has used survey studies (including longitudinal and social network analyses), experimental studies, and qualitative/mixed-method studies. Serena primarily teaches the prevention and implementation courses within the Psychology program and has supervised both Bachelor’s and Master’s theses. Season 9, Episode 7 w Dr Hannah Scott: 11 million nights of sleep data, what can it tell us?
In this episode, I am joined by Dr Hannah Scott. We specifically discuss her recent work, “Are we getting enough sleep? Frequent irregular sleep was found in an analysis of over 11 million nights of objective in-home sleep data. In this study, data were analyzed from registered users of the Withings under-mattress Sleep Analyzer (predominantly located in Europe and North America) who had ≥28 nights of sleep recordings, averaging ≥4 per week. Sleep durations (the average and standard deviation) were assessed across a ∼9-month period. The sample consisted of 67,254 adults (52,523 males, 14,731 females; aged mean ± SD 50 ± 12 years). About 30% of adults demonstrated an average sleep duration outside the recommended 7-9 h/night. Even in participants with an average sleep duration within 7-9 hours, about 40% of nights were outside this range. Only 15% of participants slept between 7 and 9 hours for at least 5 nights per week. You can read the full paper here https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S235272182300253X We discuss Hannah’s background and interest in sleep The changing landscape of sleep research and the new integrated approach at Flinders We walk through the paper and the impact of such findings, including sex and age differences The Withings under mattress device and validation The data depiction and ease of understanding Sleep irregularity and other research findings such as irregular sleep and greater risk of hypertension Future research emerging from these findings Challenges with science communication and different spheres of expertise in sleep Sleep and dreams and the lack of knowledge in this space Any many more items Hannah’s Bio: Dr Hannah Scott (BPsyc(Hons), PhD) is a Research Fellow at the Flinders Health and Medical Research Institute (FHMRI): Sleep Health investigating the use of digital technologies to better assess and manage sleep health and its disorders. At 3.5 years post-PhD, Dr Scott has authored 41 publications, 2 book chapters, and 9 successful research funding applications totalling over $2,000,000.
