Maryam’s efforts to share this heritage on a global scale led to a collaboration with HALEOBI, a Japanese online shop specializing in ikat kimono ties and socks. Through this partnership, she explores the intersection of Uzbek and Japanese textile traditions. She actively promotes Uzbek fabrics through online platforms and international markets, focusing on cross-cultural exchange and sustainable entrepreneurship. Her work not only supports local artisans but also builds connections between communities with shared values in traditional craft. Maryam remains committed to expanding these efforts, with future projects aimed at blending Uzbek cultural identity with contemporary global design in respectful and innovative ways.

Suzani—derived from the Persian word for “needle”—is a traditional embroidered textile from Central Asia, especially Uzbekistan. Historically handcrafted with cotton or silk and inspired by nature, these vibrant textiles were used to decorate homes and given as part of wedding dowries. In this episode, we dive into the captivating world of Suzani. After discovering these intricate works at a monthly art festival in Tashkent, I was so moved that I apprenticed with a local artisan family. As I learn the techniques of hand embroidery, we explore their dedication to preserving the traditional craft in a modern world increasingly dominated by machine-made imitations and tourist-oriented products.
