June Crespo’s sculptural assemblages, which the artist understands as communicating vessels, resonate within our bodies. Yet the artist is not concerned with representing these plants. Instead of proposing a classificatory symbolic order, they serve as starting points for a deeper engagement with materiality and the evocative potential of surfaces and textures, which take precedence over the pictorial dimension. Crespo treats her materials as agents, understanding herself an assistant to her work rather than an authority figure. Listen to John Smith talk about his most ordinary name and how that possibly has more impact on his work than you’d think; how this inspired him to make the (autofictional) film Being John Smith (2024), one of three films in his Secession show; about the power of language, used both as voice-over and caption, over imagery; and about bad puns. This episode was recorded on 11 September 2025, shortly before the opening of John’s exhibition: John SmithBeing John Smith12.9. – 16.11.2025 In the mid-1970s, John Smith shared the widespread interest in challenging the illusionism of mainstream cinema and subverting apparent divisions between abstraction and representation, between the personal and the political. He did so alongside colleagues from the Royal College of Art, where he trained, and members of the London Film-Makers’ Co-operative. From the beginning, he was also fascinated by the capacity of sound – especially of the spoken word – to shape perception or conjure images. Smith handles image, sound, and text flexibly: instead of synchronizing them, he works with interruptions and disruptions – and a lot of black screen in between. He explains: ‘I’m not afraid of having darkness in films because that’s where the imagination works. I really love sound and darkness.’ More Since 1972, John Smith has made over sixty film, video and installation works that have been shown in museums, art galleries and independent cinemas around the world and awarded major prizes at many international film festivals. This episode is a conversation between architect and Atelier Bow-Wow-founding-member Momoyo Kiajima and curator Haris Giannouras. It was recorded right after the opening of the exhibition Suturing Together by Atelier Bow-Wow on 12 September 2025. Their discussion focuses on care work in architecture, books and their forms in designing and understanding the build environment, 1980s Japanese comedy shows, Sutemi Horiguchi, and the importance of love in building someone’s home. Atelier Bow-WowSuturing Together12.9. – 16.11.2025 The exhibition Suturing Together includes a site-specific intervention covering almost the entire right arch of the Secession’s foyer, an extended archive showing the studio’s practice spanning over the last 30 years, a thatch-seating made using thatch in collaboration with students from Vienna and a poster with detailed essays and an analytical index of Atelier Bow-Wow’s past projects. Exploring material networks, supply chains and ad hoc architecture, the term “Suturing” becomes a stand-in for the studio's synergetic approach: piecing together things that have been torn up, forms, communities, histories and memories. Momoyo Kaijima has been serving as professor of architectural behaviorology at ETH, Zurich, since 2017 and vice president of the NPO Cheer Art, where she became president in 2024. She also taught as a visiting professor at the Department of Architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design in 2003 and 2016, as well as at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2011–2012, at Rice University in 2014–2015, at Columbia University in 2017, and at the Yale School of Architecture in 2023. In 2018, she was the curator of Japanese pavilion at the 16th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. In 2024, she was appointed to the planning and management committee of TOTO Gallery·Ma and made a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts. Im Gespräch mit der Medien- und Filmkünstlerin Constanze Ruhm geht es insbesondere um Werke aus den letzten 20 Jahren, ausgehend von kuratorischen Tätigkeiten, zu denen die Ausstellung Fate of Alien Modes (2003) im Auftrag der Secession zählt, die Diskurszusammenhänge zwischen Film und Kunst ins Licht rückte. Von der Konzeptkunst und vom Interesse für digitale Technologien und mediale Dispositive entwickelten sich die künstlerischen Projekte nach dem Studium Visueller Mediengestaltung bei Peter Weibel hin zur Rekonstruktion filmischer Räume und zur Kritik männlich kodierter Blickregime und Szenarien. Constanze Ruhm erläutert Appropriationsgesten, die sie im Rahmen ihrer Beschäftigung mit weiblichen Figuren der Filmgeschichte entwickelte. Im Laufe ihrer Recherchen, die sie von Filmarchiven zu historischen Orten führen, deutet sie antike Mythen feministisch um und verknüpft sie mit den Rollen realer Figuren, sowie mit zeitgenössischen Kontexten. Ins Zentrum des Gesprächs rückt in diesem Zusammenhang Ruhms Arbeit zum italienischen Feminismus, die ihrer Auseinandersetzung mit Carla Lonzi entspringt. Dies wird unter anderem an ihrem Interesse an Gesten der Unterbrechung und des Widerständigen deutlich, als Möglichkeiten des politischen Handelns, aber auch als Strategien der Selbstermächtigung und des Sichtbarmachens von weiblicher Arbeit und Solidarität. Der Figur der Probe kommt in Ruhms filmischen Essays über Formen des Reenactments und des Castings eine besondere Rolle zu. Sie führt zu einer wesentlichen Frage hin: wie kann der historische Feminismus der 1970er-Jahre aus der Gegenwart heraus betrachtet werden, und was kann er jüngeren Generationen heute sagen?Diese Episode wurde am 17. Juli 2025 in der Secession aufgenommen. Constanze Ruhm ist Künstlerin, Filmemacherin, Autorin und Kuratorin. In ihren Installationen, Filmen, fotografischen Serien und Publikationen untersucht sie die Beziehungen unterschiedlicher zeitbasierter Formen zwischen Film, bildender Kunst und Neuen Medien. Dabei erforscht sie deren jeweilige Geschichten und Theorien, oft mit einem Fokus auf Probenprozesse und Strategien des Re-Enactments. Ihre thematischen Schwerpunkte liegen auf Fragen des filmischen Blicks sowie der filmischen Narration und der damit verbundenen Machtverhältnisse, auf feministischen Dramaturgien und Theorien des Films sowie auf der Rolle von Archiven innerhalb einer zeitgenössischen filmisch-künstlerischen Praxis. Ihre zwischen Essay, Fiktion und Dokumentation angesiedelten Werke nehmen insbesondere weibliche Filmfiguren in den Blick, um deren Narrationen aus zeitgenössischer, feministischer Perspektive neu zu erzählen. Die Arbeiten werden sowohl auf der Kinoleinwand als auch in installativen Ausstellungsformaten gezeigt. Sie studierte an der Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Wien und an der Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main. Sie erhielt zahlreiche Preise und Auszeichnungen, darunter der Efebo d'Oro Città di Palermo for New Languages, der Outstanding Artist Award für Dokumentarfilm (2021), der Preis für Innovatives Kino der diagonale (2020), der Würdigungspreis für Medienkunst des Landes Niederösterreich (2009), der Würdigungspreis für Bildende Kunst der Stadt Wien (2009), der Frauenkunstpreis für Medienkunst (2000) u.v.m. Luisa Ziaja spricht mit Oliver Ressler über seine künstlerische Praxis, insbesondere über seine Videos und Videoinstallationen der letzten Jahre. Eva Schlegel spricht mit der Kuratorin Antonia Hoerschelmann über ihre künstlerischen Anfänge, die prägende Zeit in New York, biografische Einflüsse und die "Alchemie der Materialverwendung". Gemeinsam beleuchten sie entlang ihrer unverwechselbaren Werkserien die Rolle von Raum und Wahrnehmung und wie diese mittels künstlerischer Strategien wie Licht, Spiegelung und Unschärfe erweitert und in Frage gestellt werden. Jeremy ShawTowards Logarithmic Delay29.5. – 31.8.2025 The exhibition Towards Logarithmic Delay presents three new sculptural works that engage with the concept of border zones and the disorientation brought about by the dissolution of spatial and perceptual thresholds. The first work visitors encounter, Maximum Horizon (2024), comprises a triptych of stained-glass windows – akin to those commonly seen in churches and other places of worship – that are set into one of a number of a raw, unfinished drywalls that reappear throughout the exhibition. More Jeremy Shaw (b. North Vancouver, Canada, 1977) works in a variety of media to explore altered states of mind and the cultural and scientific practices that aspire to map transcendental experience. Ariane Mueller talks with curator Jeanette Pacher not only about her current exhibition in Secession’s iconic exhibition hall, but also speaks about her experience of initiating projects, sharing space, ideas, and resources, and the importance of collaborating – providing broader insight into her creative practice and understanding as an artist. Decades ago, in the early 1990s, she came into contact with the conflict in Yugoslavia through her work on the art magazine Artfan (1991–1996), which she edited together with the artist Linda Bilda. Slovenian writers wanted to place articles in Artfan in which they called for arms supplies to their country in support of its war with Serbia. Unsure how to handle the situation, the artists travelled to Zagreb shortly after the war began. As a delegate to the United Nations for many years, Mueller was later also faced with the Iraq War. Kamogelo Walaza, a curatorial fellow from South Africa, spoke with the artist about his work and the exhibition: Francis OffmanWeaving Stories29.5. – 31.8.2025 The walls of the stairwell that leads to Francis Offman’s exhibition Weaving Stories are covered in dried coffee grounds. The dark tactile material transforms the narrow entrance to the exhibition space on the first floor into an immersive olfactory experience. More The works of Francis Offman consist of canvases (not mounted on stretchers) with irregular contours, featuring paintings that emerge from the associations of sections of vivid, flat, uniform colors, and collage zones made with the insertion of scraps of paper – thin or thicker sheets, salvaged from bread wrappers or shoeboxes – which enter the composition like rips or wounds. An encounter that only on occasion makes elements emerge that can be traced back to the real: a dry tree, a mountain, a portion of water, earth or sky … Offman’s pieces are free compositions that imply fragile references, minimal and understated, to a faraway world (Africa and Rwanda, where the artist spent some of his childhood) and its customs, a traumatic memory and an uncertain identity; jagged, dynamic spaces that cannot give rise to an integral landscape. This episode is a conversation between the artist Ana Vaz and the curator Damian Lentini. It was recorded on 7 March, 2025 in the context of the exhibition: Ana VazMeteoro 8.4. – 18.5.2025 In her film-poems artist and filmmaker Ana Vaz collages images and sounds that revolve around violence and repression, the impact of ecological ruin and the continued colonization of the earth. The deconstruction of the grand narrative of Western modernity that imposes itself across vast territories on this planet lies at the heart of her filmography. In her exhibition at the Secession, Vaz showcases her new film series Meteoro (2023–). Predominantly focusing on Paris and Porto, European cities are depicted as on the verge of collapse or on the path to extinction. More Ana Vaz is an artist and filmmaker born in the Brazilian midwest inhabited by the ghosts buried by its modernist capital: Brasília. Originally from the cerrado and wanderer by choice, Ana has lived in the arid lands of central Brazil and southern Australia, in the mangroves of northern France and in the northeastern shores of the Atlantic. Her filmography activates and questions cinema as an art of the (in)visible and instrument capable of transforming human perception, expanding its connections with forms of life — other than human or spectral. Her film-poems are marked by a constant experimental defiance to the poetic forms of contemporary cinema, highlighting the profound contradictions of our time and questioning, above all, the destructive practices of colonial modernity. Consequences or expansion of her cinematography, her activities are also embodied in writing, critical pedagogy, installations or collective walks. Like many artists who have exhibited here, Yuki Okumura took its empty state as a departure point for his working process. But instead of bringing works to this ideal backdrop to isolate art from the world, the artist conceived three site-specific projects to rediscover the space as a lived room interconnected with the world marked by its own conditions and contexts. The idea that natural elements can serve as witnesses to history is central to my work. When you look at the landscapes in my projects – what I refer to as ‘landscapes of violence’ or ‘geographies of violence’ – you see how these environments bear witness to historical trauma and conflict. Spanning film, performance, sculpture, drawing, and installation, his work is inspired both by archaeological artefacts and the natural world, exploring the temporal shifts between ancient civilisations and contemporary societies. Using artefacts as a starting point, he investigates the boundaries of ideologies that underpin the foundations of nations and the myth of national progression. His work considers the links between archaeology, historical narrative and heritage, and the processes of excavation and relocation of cultural objects into museums. Reflecting on different geographies of violence in his native Lebanon but also in the broader region, he interrogates the ways in which political violence disseminates into people’s bodies and the physical and cultural landscape. More Jeanette Pacher is a curator for contemporary art and has worked at the Secession since 2007, where she has developed numerous exhibitions in a sustained dialogue with artists, often supporting them in the production of new works, and has edited and contributed to related publications. Matthias Herrmann (*1963 in München) war von 1986 bis 1988 Mitglied des Balletts der Wiener Staatsoper. Von 1988 bis 1993 studierte er konzeptuelle Kunst bei Prof. Ernst Caramelle und Brigitte Kowanz an der Hochschule für angewandte Kunst in Wien. Von 1997 bis 1999 war er Mitglied des Vorstands der Wiener Secession, zu deren Präsident er 1999 (als jüngster Präsident seit Gustav Klimt) gewählt wurde. Von 2006 bis 2012 war er Professor für Kunst und Fotografie an der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien, wo er nach Beendigung seiner Professur von 2013 bis 2018 als Mitglied des Universitätsrats tätig war. Seit 1999 wird er als Künstler von der Galerie Steinek (www.steinek.at) vertreten und lebt heute in Wien und Riparbella (Italien), wo er mit seinem Mann eine biologische Landwirtschaft betreibt. Rike Frank interessiert sich seit den 1990er Jahren für institutionelle Modelle, ist als Kuratorin tätig, publiziert und unterrichtet gelegentlich Ausstellungsgeschichte und kuratorische Praxis. Seit 2020 ist sie Geschäftsführerin des Berliner Programm Künstlerische Forschung und leitet zusammen mit Vanessa Joan Müller die European Kunsthalle. Throughout a series of diverse yet thematically interwoven groups of works, Feinstein cuts, flips, and rearranges printed gestural marks that are then collaged into paintings; she also makes sculptures and prints out of everyday materials. The Today Show presents a range of newly created works that circulate around the question of how to connect canvas, color and gesture with the specific personal and public conditions of our time. More Rochelle Feinstein is a painter navigating the terrain of abstract painting as it unfolds across diverse and thematically interwoven bodies of work. Geometric forms—the modernist trope of the grid is a regular presence—and vibrant chroma become tools to explore notions of artistic value and production, societal structures, and feminist idioms. Though it takes myriad forms, her singular project always centers painting within culture at large. While drawing upon the conventions embedded in painting practices as much those of contemporary culture, her works incorporate drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and video. Damian Lentini is a curator at the Vienna Secession. He obtained his doctoral degree in 2009 at the University of Melbourne and has realised major projects with artists such as El Anatsui, Phyllida Barlow, Kapwani Kiwanga, Sarah Sze, Sung Tieu, Raqs Media Collective, Harun Farocki, Dumb Type, Khvay Samnang, Lina Lapelytė and the Karrabing Film Collective amongst others.
