Join us as we chat about fan theories, female rage and the little details we picked up on our latest rewatch. Just stay out of the caves, okay?
Hey Scaredy Cats! Join us as we chat about some of our favourite horror video games. We go way back to discuss classic gems like Silent Hill 2 and Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem before covering more recent scarefests like Forewarned and Phasmophobia.

Hey Scaredy Cats. For the longest time, I had one movie on my to watch list that was my white whale. I had seen it lauded as one of the scariest movies ever and the best horror movie you’ve never seen. I was on the hunt. It wasn’t streaming anywhere in Canada and I had resigned myself to never seeing it. But then I saw an announcement on Twitter that it was being released on blu ray by Second Sight Films. So, of course, I preordered it and paid an obscene amount of money for a movie I had never watched, assuming that internet listicles were not lying to me and that it was indeed an incredible film. That film was Lake Mungo. And let me tell you that even though it was not what I was expecting, this 2008 Australian film had a huge impact on me.
I’m your host Sherri and this is just your friendly reminder that as always there will be loads of spoilers, so if you haven’t seen the movie, go watch it! Otherwise, proceed at your own risk.

Hey Scaredy Cats. Welcome back to the month of camp carnage. I know, I know, no one goes to camp in January, but when you’re stuck in the frozen tundra that is Ontario in the winter, you gotta do what you gotta do. As a kid growing up in the eighties, slashers were all the rage. Some of the first horror movies I saw were eighties slashers. So, I definitely have a soft spot for them and the more ridiculous the better. When I heard that there was a love letter to the subgenre with a soft marshmallow centre, I knew it was the kind of movie that I needed in my life. Did I mention that I listened to Bette Davis Eyes on repeat back in the day? Ok, so you couldn’t exactly listen to something on repeat back then. You had two options. You either made a tape with just that song on it OR you would take a couple of minutes, rewind and play again. But I digress. Let’s head to Camp Blue Finch and meet some new camp counsellors and the menacing killer who’s going to ruin all the sexy times and fun. It’s time to meet THE FINAL GIRLS.

In 1978, one of the greatest horror movie franchises was born. Only two years later, another one would enter the world of horror, but weirdly enough, the villain that we associate with that franchise was really just another victim in the first installment. This swerve is so famous that it even became part of another horror movie franchise, when Ghostface first asked Casey Becker, who was the killer in the first Friday the 13th movie. So, how did the franchise that would see 10 sequels, video games, comic books, a tv series and countless fan films start? Let’s head to Camp Crystal Lake and find out!

Hey Scaredy Cats. It’s Christmas time and we’re about to head to Kingston Falls to spend time with family, friends and furry little creatures. So, stock up on some Bathroom Buddies – they’re fantastic stocking stuffers! We’re going to make some gingerbread people, get a Christmas tree from a very young Corey Feldman and watch a late night screening of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Just a word of warning, Kingston Falls may not be as idyllic as it first appears. It’s time to get festive, so grab your eggnog, turn down the lights as we chat about the 1984 smash, Gremlins.

Hey Scaredy Cats. I still remember when I found out that Santa wasn’t real. I’m going to peel back the curtain a little bit here and admit one of my embarrassing secrets. I was in grade seven, standing in line for French class. A bunch of my classmates were making fun of me for believing in Santa because generally by the age of eleven you know the truth. But not me. Whether I was just incredibly naïve or my parents were just really good liars, or a bit of both, I still believed. To this day, one of my favourite teacher was that French teacher, Mr. Ikasala, because he came out of the classroom, overheard what was happening and said that he still believed in Santa Claus. I knew then that he was just trying to make me feel better, but it meant a lot. The illusion may have been destroyed, but I didn’t become a Christmas obsessed and homicidal Santa. The same can’t be said for the main character in the 1980 film, Christmas Evil, which incidentally, is John Waters’ favourite Christmas movie.

Hey Scaredy Cats. In the mid eighties, monster movies just weren’t the trend in horror. The genre was dominated by slashers like Friday the 13th. In 1984, we had movies like Silent Night, Deadly Night, Friday the 13th: the Final Chapter (spoiler alert, it wasn’t) and probably most importantly of all, A Nightmare on Elm Street. But the horror writers and directors of the eighties would have grown up with the Hammer horror movies, so it was inevitable that someone would have come along to revitalize the monster movie, or more specifically, the vampire movie. That person was Tom Holland and his 1985 love letter to classic horror was Fright Night.
Joining us to chat about vampires are the Real Housewives of Saskatoon, Crystal and Michelle.
I’m your host Sherri and this is just your friendly reminder that as always there will be loads of spoilers, so if you haven’t seen the movie, go watch it! Otherwise, proceed at your own risk.
Before we get into the movie, I just wanted to share something near and dear to my heart. We have a special event coming up… On November 5, I’ll be holding the 3rd annual Scareathon – my gaming marathon during which I will play scary games for 24 hours straight and stream them on Twitch as part of Extra Life Game Day. Extra Life is an organization that was founded in Texas in 2008 and they’ve raised over $100 million USD to support children’s hospitals. They help fund critical treatments or pediatric medical equipment, ensure that hospitals can provide charitable care and cover specialized services that may not be covered by insurance. I’ll be raising money for my local Children’s Miracle Network hospital and I’d love it if you popped in. I will be doing all kinds of silly things to entertain and incentivize donors. You can find me on Twitch as Scaredy Sherri and you can donate here.

Hey Scaredy Cats! Welcome to the Haunted Library. I’m Sherri… (Ryan introduces himself). We’ve talked about it on so many occasions, but we are both huge fans of haunted house stories. Since it’s October and Halloween is just around the corner, we wanted to talk about one of our favourite haunted house novels. In fact, it’s a book so scary that Stephen King has described it as one of the most important horror novels of the twentieth century. It’s an absolute classic and has inspired a play, two movies and a Netflix series. Grab yourself a seasonal beverage, curl up under your favourite blanket and get cozy because it’s time to talk about Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House.

Hey Scaredy Cats. Imagine you’re a young child, maybe six or seven years old. You head to your local theatre to catch a matinee all by yourself. You’re a hardened horror fan despite your young age, but what you see scares you so much that you literally pray for the sunshine to last. This movie sticks with you for decades and when you become a filmmaker, you remake it as a way of purging it from your system. That’s exactly what happened to Indonesian filmmaker, Joko Anwar. The movie? Satan’s Slaves.
This is just your friendly reminder that as always, we will be breaking down the plot in great detail. That means… there will be loads of spoilers, so if you haven’t seen the movie, go watch it! Hey Scaredy Cats. In 2003, Quentin Tarantino started showing double features at his house. Being the die hard film fanatic that he is, he would also play movie trailers before each film. At one such screening, his friend Robert Rodriguez suggested that they do a double feature together. Tarantino loved the idea and came up with the name Grindhouse. For the price of one movie ticket, you got to see two cool movies made as tribute to the grindhouse movies of the seventies, complete with fake trailers and ads. Rodriguez made the zombie action horror Planet Terror and Tarantino made a slasher movie that also paid tribute to classic car movies like Vanishing Point and Gone in 60 Seconds (the good one, not that Angelina Jolie bullshit as one of the characters says). Unfortunately, the concept didn’t make a big impact on the box office in North America and the movies were then released separately for international audiences.
Just a friendly reminder that as always, we will be breaking down the plot in great detail. That means… there will be loads of spoilers, so if you haven’t seen the movie, go watch it! Otherwise, proceed at your own risk. Joining us to talk about one part of the Grindhouse double feature are Kendall from the TerrorNova podcast, Jessica, and Ryan.
Yes, we should have done this as a Grindhouse episode and if we were going to break it up into two, Planet Terror should have come first. We're breaking all kinds of rules because that's the kind of rebel podcast we are.

Hey Scaredy Cats! Welcome to the Haunted Library with Sherri and Ryan. This month’s installment is all about Gloria by Bentley Little:
"Considering she had just attended her mother’s funeral, Gloria Jaymes never expected to see the woman again, but then her dead mom shows up at her house. Gloria’s mom is… different. She’s younger than when she died, dressed in clothes from the 1980s. And nobody else in Gloria’s family seems to recognize her. As Gloria tries to figure out the reason for her mother’s reappearance — and the odd behaviors the woman begins to exhibit — other bizarre events occur. The changes to Gloria’s world are small and subtle, at first… then they become much more startling. The freaky situation might just be connected to a mysterious shed in a small California town. The strangers who gather around the shed seem to know Gloria’s name… and maybe they aren’t strangers after all."

Picture this. Two horror legends meet and become friends. They put their collective heads together to create a horror anthology that pays homage to old comic books. Comic books that told grisly tales of murder and astonishing creatures. Bring in a special effects and make up wizard. Add a handful of familiar faces. What do you get? The absolute delight that is 1982’s Creepshow. Joining us to talk about this anthology classic are Crystal, Jon and Steve.

Hey Scaredy Cats. It’s rare for a movie to pretty much bomb upon release, practically ruining the career of its director only to be critically lauded within a couple of decades. I’m not talking about a movie becoming a cult classic after having been discovered and celebrated by fans. I’m talking about a movie that received reviews stating that the only way to deal with a movie like this was to flush it down the toilet. Twenty years later, a critic would write “if I were forced at the point of a sharpened tripod leg, to name the ten best films I have ever seen, that list would include Peeping Tom.”
The werewolf squad is back! Joining us to discuss Michael Powell's classic are Brian and Jessica.

Welcome to the Haunted Library. This month’s installment is all about the so called “last Castle Rock Story,” Needful Things. We're your hosts, Ryan and Sherri, the founding members of the Castle Rock Book Club. I think this was the Castle Rock story that we were most looking forward to reading.
"Leland Gaunt opens a new shop in Castle Rock called Needful Things. Anyone who enters his store finds the object of his or her lifelong dreams and desires: a prized baseball card, a healing amulet. In addition to a token payment, Gaunt requests that each person perform a little "deed," usually a seemingly innocent prank played on someone else from town. These practical jokes cascade out of control and soon the entire town is doing battle with itself. Only Sheriff Alan Pangborn suspects that Gaunt is behind the population's increasingly violent behavior."

In October of 1973, author Lois Duncan released a young adult thriller. She was inspired to write it when she was making dinner, and overheard her daughter and a friend having a conversation about a boy. One of the girls had a crush on a boy, the other was talking about what to wear on a date she was looking forward to. The twist? Both girls were talking about the same boy. Duncan began to wonder – what would happen if the boy had deliberately implanted himself in the lives of two girls he knew were friends and if he built up a different personality to present to each of them. She later read a story about a hit and run accident in the newspaper. These events formed the basis of the novel I Know What You Did Last Summer. More than 20 years later, Kevin Williamson, riding high on his Scream success, would sell his script for a movie very, very loosely based on Duncan’s novel. It was the late nineties after all and teen horror was EVERYTHING. So, get out your tiaras and your crop tops. Watch out for rain slickers and bad hair. It’s time to talk about I Know What You Did Last Summer.
