🔊 Welcome back to ep.006 of Sayo Says! And if you’re joining for the first time, don’t forget to go back and watch the previous episodes !
I’m your host, Adesayo, but you can call me Sayo, and I’m so happy to have you here.
Today’s episode is very special!! It’s our first guest episode, and it’s with none other than Kelechi Okafor ( @kelechnakof ). Kelechi is a Nigerian-British, multi-disciplinarian with unrivalled wit and intelligence. She is an actress, public speaker, writer and author, pole dance enthusiast, social commentator- to name but a few of the hats that she wears.
In this episode we talk about:
📲 Navigating online criticism and floggings
⚧️ Internalised misogyny
🙋🏾♀️Womanism and feminism
🚺 Femininity coaches
📖 Kelechi’s book, ‘ Awakened’, and being an author
In this episode, we sit down with Kelechi and talk about what it’s like to be an out-spoken Black woman forging a career and navigating visibility online and the growth that is gained from a good online flogging when you’re wrong. In this episode, we also colourfully discuss the importance of reading Black authors, academics and experts and what it means for literacy that interest in English Language and Literature are declining in Universities. We speak about womanism, feminism, internalised misogyny, and Black-British women; addressing our own journeys and we both voice our suspicions and distrust of the rise of femininity coaches and fascism. We discuss Kelechi’s new fiction book, ‘ Awakened’, and her motivations and influences for writing it. This episode also has a special story time segment / format that I hope you will enjoy as much as myself and Kelechi did.
🍿This is a must watch if you love nuance and a good story time, and thinking beyond the surface; then you’re going to love this show!
Thank you for watching.
