The weather is rubbish again, but it hasn’t stopped me crossing off a huge project from my to do list. I have spent months working on some pretty serious greenhouse maintenance and it feels wonderful to have it done. : o)

We’ve had another storm, a kitchen reno and I’ve been in thegarden making hay while the sun shines, getting stuff done. The days are whizzing by and I’m trying my best to make them all count.

I’ve had a productive day in the garden transplantingseedlings and weeding but today’s chit chat is all about the food. Tonight, I’m making a fennel risotto straight from the garden and it’s going to be delish!

Well – technically spring started yesterday, but winter leftwith a sting in her tail and yesterday was a bit traumatic with the lingering bad weather and storm damage. But todayis a new day, the sun came out and there is optimism in the air!
So this is the first episode of season 4 of my littlepodcast with updates from my garden and I would love for you to join me as I grow wonderful things this growing season here in New Zealand. It’s going to be fabulous.

The real episode 5, last time I got ahead of myself. Yesterday the weather was horrible. The Eastly was howling a hoolie and we got 10mm of rain so no gardening was done. But today was one of those magnificent blue-sky days and it got Hot! But it didn’t stop me, and more stuff got done. So I’m no track for a tip top garden for the February visits.

The new and improved sector zone system is working well, and the edible garden is pretty much back under control and now only needs a routine weed, path hoe, water and fortnightly liquid feed each time it’s turn comes around. Any extra time is for remedial work around the edges and soon for projects. I’m really happy with how it is coming along.

Today I made another big push in sector 4 of the garden. Ordinarily I would have just done what I could on a Thursday and left what didn’t get done until next time, whenever that was… no wonder the edges got weedy. But now after two days in sector 4, 4/5 of the edible garden are back to manageable and it feels good.

After a great deal of thought, I have come up with some action plans to make the garden work better and smarter and hopefully be a lot less weedy. One of the ideas is to tackle the routine tasks in a closed loop, picking up where I last left off instead of starting the week back at the start. It is already making a difference and I’m excited for it.

Happy New Year! Although I’m in the midst of a growing season, the year has changed, and I’ve been doing a bit of reflection to assess how the garden coped in the last 12 months so I can ponder how I’ll take care of it in the next 12 months.
It’s been a while, things got a little hectic there towards the end of the year, but with a new resolution I intend to pick up where I left off with more regular updates of all the interesting things going on in the garden.

I‘ve been so busy out there doing it that I’ve been too exhausted at the end of the day to do much more than sit on the sofa and moan about my weary bones. But as I build on my new season strength, the garden is starting to become spring ready before my very eyes… for the most part!

Getting help in the garden is what holds back my procrastination. Once a week I get way more done in the garden than any other day, which feels amazing and spurs me on for the rest of the week.

Just when you feel on top of the world, the weather conspires against you. Last week’s weather was mostly awful so there wasn’t really much to talk about. Today was a good day and I packed a lot in while the sun was shining.

Finally I feel good, which means there is no stopping me in the garden and I’m making great progress. The only thing that can stop me now is this tease of a season… spring.

Today was a little bit different. I gave a talk to a bunch of keen gardeners at a local garden club and then I continued with my seed sowing with another handful of seeds.

Spring is a season not to be trusted – one moment it is wonderful and the next it is horrible. Today was one of those horrible days with rain coming in sideways. But I made the best of it.

As much as I want to say I’ve been in the garden taking care of business, sadly I can’t. Without being too dramatic I’ve been struck down with a cold and haven’t done much at all. But I have time on my side and everything will be ok. : o)
