Rooted Futures: Youth, Agroecology and Regeneration in Indonesia

Indonesia – an archipelago of over seventeen thousand islands – is home to some of the world’s most diverse and abundant ecosystems. Here, towering volcanic peaks give way to rice terraces, tropical forests and coastal wetlands. For generations, these landscapes have sustained life and culture in intricate balance. But today, that balance is under threat. Industrial agriculture, land conversion and extractive development are reshaping the environment. All over the archipelago, youth are leaving the land behind. And farming – once a source of pride and identity – is increasingly seen as outdated, unprofitable or irrelevant. Meanwhile, the climate crisis continues to escalate. Droughts and floods hit harder and more often. Fertile soils, once rich with promise, are turning dry and depleted. And yet… across this nation, new roots are taking hold. Agroecology – which seeks to balance agricultural production with ecological systems – is emerging as a powerful tool for regeneration, especially in the hands of young innovators. These groups are setting out to restore ecosystems, replenish soils and build resilience to climate shocks. Crucially, thisapproach offers a way to honour cultural heritage while meeting the demands of the future.
