31: Grace Tame (part 2): The dark side of running, healing and peanut butter
In this episode of Run With It, host Elise Beacom continues her interview with Grace Tame, focusing on Grace’s experience as a survivor of child sexual abuse and how she rediscovered running as a healing mechanism. Grace discusses her past struggles with eating disorders, the autistic traits that complement running and the fine line between running for therapy and running to mask deeper troubles. Also, PEANUT BUTTER. A lot of peanut butter in this episode. Plus, a special shout out for Andy Buchanan. -- This episode includes discussions about child sexual abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders and mental health. If any of these topics are distressing for you, please call Lifeline at 13 11 14 or visit www.lifeline.org.au for confidential support and resources. -- Since being announced Australian of the Year in January 2021, Grace Tame has become a household name as a brave and passionate advocate for systemic change to prevent child sexual abuse. She was the first female in Tasmania to be granted the right to speak under her own name about her personal experience of sexual abuse as a child. "Grace appeared as part of the #LetHerSpeak campaign (run by sexual assault campaigner and Walkley award winning journalist Nina Funnell). Since then, she has used her voice to raise awareness of the impacts of grooming and the other various injustices faced by child sex abuse survivors.  Before returning to her home of Tasmania in 2020, Grace lived in the USA for almost seven years where she graduated with Associate Degrees with Honours in Liberal Arts and Theatre Arts from Santa Barbara City College. In the USA she worked as a yoga instructor and an artist with clients including actor John Cleese and musician Martin Gore. Grace is an excellent runner who has won several marathons and ultras, including the Great Ocean Road Ultra Marathon, the Bruny Island Ultra Marathon and the Australian Outback Marathon. -- This episode is sponsored by Mikro Coffee Roasters. 30: Grace Tame (part 1): Running to connect, toothbrush abs and speaking out
Running is a thread that weaves through many aspects of Grace Tame’s life.  In this special two-part episode of Run With It, host Elise Beacom connects the dots with Grace, who’s an advocate, public speaker, writer, artist, runner, and the 2021 Australian of the Year (TW: child sexual abuse, mental health and sexual assault). Part one traces Grace’s sandy footsteps from the Australian Outback Marathon to the political and emotional terrain of survivor advocacy. Grace shares what it took to set a course record in brutal conditions at her recent marathon near Uluru, and how running has become a metaphor and outlet for life’s bigger battles. We hear about her role at the Grace Tame Foundation, an organisation championing education, legal reform, and accessible support for survivors of child sexual abuse. Grace also reflects on the complexities of receiving the Australian of the Year award, offering a sharp, honest take on media scrutiny, public expectation and the weight of visibility. From the connections running creates to our environment and the people around us, to bonds expressed through oil paint with a toothbrush, Grace is full of stories brimming with strength, shared experience and a good whack of humour. -- This episode includes discussions about child sexual abuse, mental health and sexual assault. Sole Sisters - 15: Horoscopes, (mis)fortune cookies and Greek mythology
In this episode of Sole Sisters, Elise and Alice embrace the weird, wacky and wonderful – venturing into Greek mythology, horoscopes and whether you can catch influenza A from aquatic birds. There hasn’t been much running on both sides, but there’s been some good trauma bonding, and you best believe it, there’s still plenty to talk about. They cover their chaotic experience staying at the “Pink Pussy Palace” for marathon weekend on the Gold Coast, which was all glitz and jet skis and potential bed bugs. They recap their friend Jess’ marathon race experience including a hearty carb load and a vodka cruiser at the 41k mark. The fallout of that trip was a big crash and burn for AB who was smacked down with sickness. But she’s recovering just in time to do another unhinged ultra relay in the US. EB’s injury rehab is going nicely – she’s getting some continuous runs in and hopping around the gym to her heart’s content. -- This episode is sponsored by Mikro Coffee Roasters. 29: Lucy Bartholomew, on storytelling, body image and Taurus energy
Professional ultra runner Lucy Bartholomew ran her first 100k at Surf Coast Century when she was 16. Not because she wanted to be someone, or become someone. She just wanted to run it. And she did – with her dad right there on her shoulder. In this conversation, we talk about the “Ned effect” era, where runners are taking on big challenges to become known, rather than having a more intrinsic motivation. We discuss body image issues which are rife in running and made worse now by social media, and the hardships Lucy faced finding her identity as a young athlete in the public eye. We also ponder whether awareness around eating disorders and under fuelling is getting through to the next wave of runners in the running boom. Hearing Lucy speak will make you want to run trails! She has a contagious positive energy that you can’t help but be inspired by. Lucy is currently in Chamonix where she’s preparing for her third Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB) at the end of August. She hopes to better her 10th place performances from the past two years. -- Lucy Bartholomew is one of Australia’s most accomplished ultramarathon and endurance athletes. She’s earned podium finishes at several major races, including Ultra‑Trail Australia and the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run. She is one of few women to complete both the Ultra‑Trail du Mont‑Blanc and the Ironman World Championship in the same year (and she did it twice – in 2023 and 2024). A Salomon-sponsored athlete, Lucy is also a coach, creator, and passionate advocate for trail running and women’s health. -- This episode is sponsored by Mikro Coffee Roasters. 28: Calli Hauger-Thackery, on shifting mindsets, romance and racing like crazy
This episode is sponsored by Mikro Coffee Roasters. Head to Mikro.coffee and use code RUNWITHIT10 for 10% off. Calli Hauger-Thackery is a born racer. She ran a debut marathon that most athletes would fantasise about – 2:22:17 – which earnt her the title of 2nd fastest British woman ever (shared with Charlotte Purdue at the time). But Calli describes her 2023 debut as both a blessing and a curse. Her time qualified her for the Paris Olympics, which would be her second marathon ever – talk about baptism by fire!  After a disappointing DNF at Paris, Calli bounced back in a BIG way! She came 7th at Berlin in 2024, running a PB of 2:21:24, solidifying her place as the 2nd best Brit all-time. And earlier this year, she put herself right in the mix at Boston, coming home with 6th place. We talk about Calli’s time training with Melbourne Track Club a few years back, and the mindset shift she made after some frustrating years of not making teams. Calli now has plenty of opportunities in front of her. She’s been selected to run the marathon for Great Britain at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this year, but is likely to have another option in the 10,000m (maybe even the 5,000m – let’s see)! And most importantly, we also get the love story between Calli and now husband/coach Nick Hauger – and it’s a real goodie!   -- Follow us on Instagram: @callirianne @runwithit.pod @elisebeacom -- Intro/outro music by Dan Beacom Graphic design by Kate Scheer

Sole Sisters - 14: Rawdogging a 24-hour ultra relay
In this episode of Sole Sisters, Alice recaps the Red Bull Race the Sun relay where she and her teammates ran 345km with 6,000m+ elevation gain. Give the girl a space blanket and a barley sugar!   The objective was to get from the Gold Coast at sunrise to Tenterfield in New South Wales before the sun rose again. And guess what, they beat the sun! They also came third overall. But it was far from glamourous. It was six sweaty bodies bundled in two vans with crushed Nutri-Grain on the floor, a lack of music, no sleep and plenty of stomach aches. Meanwhile, Elise is a different shade of broken, experiencing her first baby stressie. -- Follow us on Instagram: @runwithit.pod @alicebaquie @elisebeacom -- Intro/outro music by Dan Beacom Graphic design by Kate Scheer

27: Quick Take - Jaryd Clifford shatters own World Record & speaks out about rival Yassine Ouhdadi’s doping ban
It’s been a massive month for Paralympian Jaryd Clifford. Fresh off breaking his own World Record in the T12 1500m, Jaryd joins Elise Beacom to talk about his race in Nice, France, where he ran 3:40.34 in a return to career-best form. Jaryd also speaks out about his competitor, Spanish athlete Yassine Ouhdadi who’s recently been handed a three-year suspension after testing positive for banned anabolic steroid, Clostebol. Ouhdadi won gold in the T13 5000m at the Paris Paralympics and will forfeit his medal because the test sample was taken before the games. Ouhdadi beat Jaryd (who won silver) at both T13 5000m events at the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021 and the World Championships in Paris 2023. 26: Haftu Strintzos, on resilience, and big transitions in life and running
Haftu Strintzos spent the first years of his life as a shepherd in mountainous Tigray in northern Ethiopia. He cared for sheep and cows and played hopscotch (the Tigrayan version) with the other shepherds. Now an Asics-sponsored athlete, with his sights on representing Australia in the marathon, Haftu has the most incredible story brimming with resilience and perspective. But to understand how he got from A to B, you’ll just have to listen to this episode. Haftu talks about some defining moments of his athletic career so far, including running for Villanova University in the US, finishing first Australian across the line at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Serbia, winning the 10,000m at the 2024 Oceania Athletics Championships and achieving silver in the 5,000m. After his half marathon debut in Melbourne last year (62:24), Haftu followed up with a blinder in Marugame in Japan, where he ran 60:36 and asserted himself as a real contender on the roads. Unfortunately, Haftu’s marathon debut was foiled by an injury that popped up just before Hamburg Marathon earlier this year. We discuss how he’s dealing with that injury setback, how training has changed since he transitioned to Adam Didyk’s Team Tempo and what Haftu’s big goals for the future look like. -- Follow us on Instagram: @haftustrintz @runwithit.pod @elisebeacom -- Intro/outro music by Dan Beacom Graphic design by Kate Scheer

Sole Sisters - 13: If you were President of the World Marathon Majors, what would you change?
In this episode of Sole Sisters, Alice and Elise share the latest happenings, laden with innuendo and a few existential musings. The conversation kicks off with Alice’s new bangs (fringe) and some brutally honest family reactions to her new hairdo. EB and AB engage in some tattoo “show and tell” (terrible radio), and Alice announces signing up for an ultra-marathon, which is the final piece of the puzzle in her early onset mid-life crisis (tattoo, fringe & ultra as the telling triad). For their main topic, Alice shares some deeper insights into Boston and London as World Marathon Majors. Alice has developed a traffic light rating system for each event – green for good, amber for average and red for could be improved. They touch on everything from the pre-race activations, to logistics, excellent homemade signage, and portaloos. The ep rounds out with news and some recommendations as usual. -- Follow us on Instagram: @runwithit.pod @alicebaquie @elisebeacom -- Intro/outro music by Dan Beacom Graphic design by Kate Scheer

25: Kate Mason, on winning Ballarat Marathon, and not taking running too seriously
Kate Mason was found dancing with tambourines and maracas in a Ballarat carpark just hours after she won the marathon there. And with a win, a course record and a PB of 2:33:55, why wouldn’t you?! In this episode of Run With It, Kate recaps her race, including some critical changes she made to her fuelling this time around, and the post marathon carpark DJ set with her training mates. The full-time secondary school teacher (Outdoor and Environmental Studies & PE) trains with her beloved Ninch Track Club (NTC), based on the Mornington Peninsula, just outside of Melbourne. Kate takes us through her transition from an enthusiastic and passionate “jogger” who debuted at Melbourne Marathon in 3:06 in 2014, to winning Ballarat a decade later. She also shares some terrifying experiences of getting the “wobbles” and collapsing during marathons, recounting a particularly scary instance on the Gold Coast. Despite not yet seeing herself as “elite”, Kate continues to improve. She thinks some of her success comes from not taking the sport too seriously. Kate is self-coached, with guidance from her partner Ben and her training crew. The ep closes out with some pencilled in plans for the rest of the year and what motivates her to keep rocking up every day in the dark at 5am for a run. -- Run With It: @runwithit.pod Intro/outro music by Dan Beacom Graphic design by Kate Scheer

24: Andy Buchanan, on London Marathon goals, rivalries and letting go of what people think
Before Andy Buchanan’s iconic 2:06:22 at Valencia last year, he often found himself lost in daydreams of breaking the Australian record while running in the bush. But as soon as the run was over, the thoughts would dissipate like a mirage. In this episode of Run With It, Andy shares the feeling of actually crossing the blue carpet at Valencia and experiencing time slow down in that moment. He talks about how mental training has transformed his running, adding that his breakthroughs have come when he’s let go of what other people think and truly backed himself. We discuss his progression in the marathon, his big build up to London, including a juicy time goal and his thoughts on the healthy rivalry with former Australian marathon record holder Brett Robinson. Andy weighs up running the marathon World Championships this year against Sydney Marathon, which is offering a huge prize purse, and how athletes often have to choose between making a living or representing Australia. -- Andy Buchanan is an Australian marathon runner based in Bendigo. Initially making his mark as an exceptional cross-country talent, Andy transitioned to marathon running, marking his debut with a time of 2:12:23 in 2022, before running 2:10:20 in 2023 and 2:08:58 in 2024 (all at Hamburg Marathon). He represented Australia at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, and got a late call up to compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics after Brett Robinson pulled out due to injury. Later in 2024, Andy broke the Australian record in the marathon by more than a minute at Valencia (2:06:22). Next week he’ll line up for his first Abbott World Marathon Major, London Marathon. Outside of running for Asics, Andy works as a high school teacher, an online coach with Run2PB and has a store in Bendigo, called Verve Running. -- Andy Buchanan's Instagram: @andy_buchanan Run With It: @runwithit.pod Elise Beacom: @elisebeacom -- Intro/outro music by Dan Beacom Graphic design by Kate Scheer

Sole Sisters - 11: Boston, taper crazies & hot-cross buns
On the show this week, we recap an epic nighttime race in Sydney, reflect on the Australian Athletics Championships in Perth and preview Boston Marathon (where Alice is now on-the-ground). Alice and Elise were in Sydney on the weekend for the Nike After Dark Tour, a 21.1k race celebrating 7,000+ women taking over the streets. Elise talks through the experience as a runner on the course, which felt like traversing through an urban art installation, with flashing lights, smoke machines and DJs. Alice was there supporting as #1 hype girl and carrying cinnamon scrolls. The event marked Elise’s last big session before Ballarat Marathon. Now firmly in the taper, the pair talk about all the niggles and neuroses that come to the fore at this time. There are plenty of results to highlight from Nationals in Perth – including impressive performances by Jess Hull, Cam Myers and Seth O’Donnell to name a few. Alice explains what her Boston trip will entail before the duo go through some elite names they're excited to see on the historic course this Monday. We close out with recommendations and Alice’s top four banned behaviours at the gym. Are you guilty of any of these? 23: Gen Gregson, on training while pregnant, overcoming adversity and always celebrating achievements
If Gen Gregson and husband Ryan could take turns being pregnant, Gen would happily have five kids. But in the absence of this sci-fi parallel universe, the four-time Olympian is extremely excited to be expecting baby number two – a new brother for Archer! This episode is part of a mini-series featuring some of our mighty marathon mums. In this wonderful conversation, Gen opens up about training while pregnant – a lot of what she does is based on feel (and notes in Jess Stenson’s training diary). She talks about mum strength allowing her to appreciate what she’s already achieved and take the pressure off to do every single one percenter, which helps her run freer and perform at a higher level. We also talk about how she’s learnt to be flexible and adapt to adversity. Gen goes into the learnings from her marathons to-date (Gold Coast, Valencia, Paris, Melbourne), what it’s like to have two elite athletes chasing big goals under one roof, and how even elite athletes aren’t immune from mum guilt. This episode is also dedicated to Jess Stenson, who wins the best supporting actress role in the conversation. (That’s what happens when you get two key members of the Jess Stenson appreciation society together on a Zoom call.) -- Gen Gregson is a four-time Olympian (Paris, Tokyo, Rio, London), and has ambitions to go to two more Olympics in her career. Gen started out on the track, earning herself an Australian Record in the 3000m steeplechase (9:14.28). After sustaining a horrific achilles injury clearing the final water jump in the Tokyo Olympics final, Gen had her first child, Archer while rehabbing double achilles surgery. She has since transitioned to the roads, taking to the marathon like a natural, running 2:28 on debut in her hometown of the Gold Coast, before being the fastest Australian across the line in a big head-to-head battle for an Olympic qualifier at Valencia (2:23:08). In 2024, she ran the Olympic Marathon at Paris and won Melbourne Marathon later that year.  -- Gen Gregson's Instagram: @gengen_lacaze Run With It Instagram: @runwithit.pod Elise Beacom's Instagram: @elisebeacom -- Intro/outro music by Dan Beacom Graphic design by Kate Scheer

Sole Sisters - 10: No such thing as a perfect marathon build
In this episode of Sole Sisters, training has hit a slight road bump for Alice and Elise. Elise is in the barrel of the beast, training for Ballarat Marathon. She’s facing a minor hurdle this week with a calf niggle but remains upbeat and positive, and hopes it’ll settle quickly with some deloading and extra TLC. Meanwhile Alice has some foot issues of her own to contend with which may rule her out from racing the Nike After Dark Tour 21.1k (though she'll still be there to get amongst it). The pair dissect what a marathon training week looks like for Elise at the moment and also cover Alice’s typical training week, as well as her Cyclone Alfred-induced recovery period without electricity. They talk through some recent running news, including Izzi Batt-Doyle and Leanne Pompeani’s Nagoya Marathon results, the big Eliud Kipchoge announcement for Sydney Marathon and some star athletes to watch out for at Maurie Plant meet in Melbourne. 22: Reece Edwards, on dad strength, winning marathons and running free
From running on a treadmill in a hot air balloon, to becoming a dad, Reece Edwards is always the first to put his hand up for a new adventure. In this conversation, we talk about his new running life as a dad to Oliver, what dad strength means to Reece and how his perspective on running has changed since his son arrived. Between constant sickness, reduced sleep and balancing family and work life, it’s not easy to train at such a high level. But Reece says it’s all worth it to be a dad! This episode is part of a mini-series featuring some of our mighty marathon mums (or in this case, dads)! We talk about his recent back-to-back wins at Port Fairy Marathon and what it was like to reel in two Olympians to break the tape at Melbourne Marathon in 2023. We also cover the importance of keeping some “silliness” and fun in Reece’s training, why running is better when it’s social, his goals for the future (including an outrageous long run), and what it feels like to actually be content with your PBs. -- Reece Edwards is a long and ultra distance runner who came to the sport later in life. He ran 2:13:23 at Rotterdam Marathon in 2021 and has a PB of 1:03:38 in the half marathon, which he ran the same year in Copenhagen. Domestically, he won Melbourne Marathon in 2023 and Port Fairy Marathon in 2024 and 2025. Reece has also been successful on the trails, winning several prestigious events including, Ultra Trail Australia 100k, Tarawera 102k and Berry Long run. Sole Sisters - 9: Breaking barriers for women runners
Happy International Women’s Day! This episode of Sole Sisters is an ode to women runners! Alice has a lot of time to think as she bunkers down for Cyclone Alfred. She unearths the memories of two pioneer marathoners - Bobbi Gibb and Kathrine Switzer who were the first women to run the 42.2k distance in the late 60s, despite many people trying to stand in their way. Elise has done some modern-day research and found that women’s marathon participation between Sydney, Melbourne and Gold Coast marathons comprised 27% on average between 2018-2023, with men making up 63% of the field. Participation was much more even in the half marathon. The pair then offer some general reflections on women’s participation in marathons and the barriers that still exist that prevent or hinder women from running today. These include not having enough time to train, concerns for safety, childbirth and caring responsibilities. They also have a good chat on the role of confidence and ego in the marathon. You can read the piece Elise wrote on this “Mind the Marathon Gap” in The Blue Line last year. Alice and Elise also debrief the International Women’s Day – Running Connection event organised by Love the Run last week. They rehash some of the conversation in the panel discussion about safety while running with ultra trail star Lucy Bartholomew and podiatrist/runner/coach/mum Sophie Fitt. Jess Stenson is the star of the results segment for her gutsy 2:22:56 run at Tokyo Marathon, while Izzi Batt-Doyle and Leanne Pompeani wait to line up at another Japanese race this weekend, Nagoya Marathon. Finally, here’s a no-context link to a Roy and HG video commentating men’s gymnastics from the Sydney Olympics. We talk about some of Ellie’s most memorable races like New York Marathon, where she and Sinead Diver got lost on the course (captured on live TV!), and the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Bathurst where Ellie’s family and friends wore t-shirts sporting a giant print of her face. We dive deep into why Ellie was so determined to get that Olympic qualifying time for Paris 2024, and unpack her attempts to secure it in London, Osaka and Hamburg, with lots of help from her training pals at the Surf Coast Track Club. Ellie Pashley is a marathon runner who represented Australia at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, where she finished in 23rd place. Ellie started running marathons in 2016, clocking 2:46 in Melbourne on debut. She has since progressed to 2:26, which she ran in Nagoya in 2019. One of her best performances was an 8th place at New York Marathon in 2:27. She also has a 10km PB of 31:18 from the 2019 World Championships in Doha, where she finished 13th. Ellie is also a physiotherapist and co-owner of coaching company, Run Strong, with her coach Julian Spence. She is a mum to Tiggy and Luna (her kelpie). -- Ellie Pashley’s Instagram: @ellieopash Run With It Instagram: @runwithit.pod Elise Beacom's Instagram: @elisebeacom -- Intro/outro music by Dan Beacom Graphic design by Kate Scheer

Sole Sisters - 7: Running mistakes
Sometimes it’s easier to learn from your f**k ups than your successes! This episode of Sole Sisters kicks off with a recap of Alice’s victory at the Cape Paterson Aquathon. Despite some trash talking from her sister on the start line, Alice came away with the win. On the flip side, Elise describes a horrendous 10k time trial which left her feeling defeated and deflated. We then jump into the main topic of the day – the biggest mistakes we’ve made in training and racing. From Elise collapsing at the end of Berlin Marathon or locking her keys (and race shoes) in the car minutes before a 10k race, to Alice putting herself in a glycogen hole with fasted runs – we share plenty of examples of what not to do so you don’t have to make the same mistakes! We cap off the episode with big news about Izzi Batt-Doyle’s new Australian record in the half marathon (67:17 in Marugame, Japan), as well as Cam Myers’ first open Australian record in the 3,000m on the indoor track (7:33.12 in Boston, USA) and some other great runs from Aussie runners overseas.
