It’s important to talk about good Biblical scholarship. It’s a short step to align the Bible with our views rather than our views with the Bible and its teachings. We create a new gospel that doesn’t reflect what the Bible says.
Is it too late for Christianity? It can feel hopeless but there is HOPE for reconciliation.

we've been waiting for this talk. Of course, we start with Paul....

Anything that keeps us from loving others needs to be destroyed. This reminds me of the phrase "Kill Your Idols" even if it's part of your religion.
There's still work to do. You are loved and we love to hear from you.

For this holiday weekend, Jay provides a reminder for the consistency of love. This is a direct battle against apathy and numbness. We need to be talking about the fight for humanity and the conflict that we are constantly faced with. It’s devastating to have people be disappointed with us but we can’t give up!It can be productive and rooted in love.
There’s a great section reviewing how Tillich describes indoctrination as well. If we recognize how we might have been manipulated, we can have a better chance of freeing ourselves to be able to choose love.

The Bible and Christianity have been used for discrimination for most of the modern times. People are tired and it feels like people are using religion to ignore or, worse, support the horrors that are happening around the world. In Matthew 7, we can easily misinterpret "do not throw your pearls before swine" as an excuse to disregard others, instead of loving others and being able to argue well. How does hate represent the teachings of Jesus? Let's have an honest look and determine if the religion of Christians has made things worst, while missing point.

Jay is taking an honest account of Paul and some of the critiques of the writings that are attributed to him. The hierarchy (Ephesians 5:22 for example) that was set up, by people, waters down the message of equality that is the foundation of Christianity. This only serves to divide us. Rather than negotiating with the Bible, it makes more sense to look deeper into these teachings, who might have actually written these words and the context in which they were written.

Jay finishes up Paul Tillich's "You Are Accepted". There's a lot in this talk about religion, community, morality and living a life of inclusion. We are all STILL ACCEPTED and it's the example we can use to accept other (ie. show them grace).

This week, Jay talks about a great message from Paul Tillich's "You Are Accepted" in which he explores inclusion, cynicism, hostility and estrangement. It's a great message from a great message.

We can't claim to ignore the horrible things around us. It's easy to justify how we treat others because of something that they did or we perceived they did to us. Grace calls us to defy logic and calls us to care, not when it directly impacts us, not when we're threatened and not because someone does something to benefit, or even agree with, us.
This message is NOT fragile. It has the breadth to cover all relationships as well as the specificity to change individual hearts. We're not dealing with an unpredictable god and our perception of god's character is too easily manipulated. That's a tale that has been around as long as religion has been in place. However, if we think more deeply about how grace has always been at the core of christianity, we see that there's nothing to be afraid of and everything to be gained.

It gets harder to focus on the reformation we need when it seems like things in the world are too much to digest! We have to remain as honest as possible with what we see, our ability to take action while still taking care of ourselves. It's EXHAUSTING! Christians, in general, have been too willing to compromise our values when it benefits us. Jay visits Matthew 5 to remind us the beatitudes still have a place in how we live. Remember that the message of non-violence, community and empathy is at the heart of Christianity. Keep having the hard conversations and love each other. We can do better. Peace.

It's important to remind ourselves that dignity matters. Scapegoating and vilifying others doesn't lead to a conversation and continues to divide us. If we love our enemies, as the Bible talks about in Matthew 5:43, we're forced to reconcile the cruelty that others are being shown and decide to do better. We hope that you are able to see others as our community this week and love each other. Peace and Love.
