Residue with Chrissy Champagne dives deep into the gritty world where true crime meets the movies. Each episode breaks down made-for-TV films and theatrical releases based on chilling real-life cases — exploring the facts behind the fiction, the victims behind the headlines, and the emotional residue these stories leave behind.

Still rooted in trust, instinct, and caution, Residue remains a space where true crime meets critical reflection. The original episodes are still here, but now we’re turning the spotlight on the stories Hollywood couldn’t resist — because sometimes, the scariest scripts are the ones that actually happened.

Stay paranoid.

SCREAM: The Gainesville Ripper
In the early 1990s, the college town of Gainesville,Florida was paralyzed by fear. Over just three days, five students were brutally murdered in their own apartments, victims of Danny Rolling, the man the press would call The Gainesville Ripper. His crimes were savage, his methods deliberate, and the terror he left behind felt like something straight out of a horror movie. Years later, screenwriter Kevin Williamson watched a documentary about those killings while home alone. That fear he experienced while watching that documentary became the spark for Wes Craven's Scream (1996). Set in the quiet town of Woodsboro, Scream follows a masked killer who taunts his victims with phone calls and deadly games, blurring the line between fiction and reality. What began as a true story of terror became a movie that made us all ask the same question… “What’s your favorite scary movie?” Sources: World’s Most Evil Killers: S3,EP13  https://maamodt.asp.radford.edu/psyc%20405/serial%20killers/rolling,%20danny%20-%202004.pdf https://www.ksla.com/video/2024/03/29/archives-murders-tom-julie-sean-grissom-shreveport-la-1989/ https://www.shreveporttimes.com/story/news/crime/2019/11/08/grissom-family-murders-shreveport-louisiana-gainesville-murders/4157607002/ https://www.aetv.com/articles/how-serial-killer-danny-rolling-inspired-scream-with-his-1990-slayings https://people.com/serial-killer-gainesville-ripper-danny-rolling-exclusive-11763591 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Rolling https://www.tampabay.com/archive/1993/02/20/5-dead-may-have-been-stalked/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTvIh8rC4ak See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The Stalking of Laurie Show
Send us a text Laurie Show was a 16-year-old high school student from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, whose life was tragically cut short in 1991 in a brutal act of jealousy and revenge. She had briefly dated an older teen, Lawrence  Yunkin, who was in a volatile relationship with another teenager, Michelle Lambert. Lambert became increasingly obsessed with harassing and threatening Laurie. On the morning of December 20, 1991, Laurie was attacked and murdered in her home by Lambert and her friend Tabitha Buck.  The horrifying case gained national attention and led to lengthy trials, appeals, and changes in Pennsylvania’s anti-stalking laws, largely due to the advocacy of Laurie’s mother, Hazel Show. In 2000, Lifetime adapted the story into a made-for-TV film titled The Stalking of Laurie Show, dramatizing the events leading up to Laurie’s death.  Sources: Overkill by Lyn Riddle  The Stalking of Laurie Show  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCwRY0qffDI https://lancastercountypa.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=1008&ARC=1439 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItVOg2lzq4E https://co.lancaster.pa.us/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=1008&ARC=1438 https://www.pennlive.com/news/2019/12/28-years-after-killing-laurie-show-teen-murderer-tabitha-buck-is-bound-for-freedom.html https://www.wgal.com/article/wgal-becomes-courtroom-for-appeal-by-convicted-killer-lisa-michelle-lambert/60178594 *This podcast is independently produced using publicly available information and personal research. The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom: The Wanda Holloway Story
Send us a text In 1991, Wanda Holloway, a mother from Channelview, Texas, became the center of national outrage when she attempted to hire a hitman to kill the mother of her daughter’s cheerleading rival. Holloway believed that eliminating the rival’s mother would emotionally destabilize the girl freeing up a coveted spot on the high school cheerleading squad for her own daughter. Her plan unraveled when the man she approached for help, her ex-brother-in-law, went to the police and recorded her murder-for-hire plot. Holloway was arrested, tried, and convicted, sparking headlines across the country and prompting conversations about obsession, parenting pressure, and small-town competition taken to extremes. HBO turned the bizarre true story into a dark comedy in 1993 with The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom. The film starred Holly Hunter as Wanda Holloway, delivering a chilling performance that earned her an Emmy. The movie uses biting humor and courtroom dramatization to highlight the absurdity of the crime, the media circus surrounding it, and the warped values that can emerge in the pursuit of perfection and popularity. Made For TV Movie Series: Love's Deadly Triangle - The Texas Cadet Murder of Adrianne Jones
Send us a text In 1995, a tragic crime in Grand Prairie, Texas, shocked the nation and became known as the Texas Cadet Murder. The case involved two promising high school students—Diane Zamora and David Graham—both of whom were aspiring military cadets with bright futures ahead of them. Their intense romantic relationship took a dark turn when jealousy and obsession spiraled into violence. According to court records, Graham confessed to Zamora that he had a brief encounter with fellow student Adrianne Jones, a 16-year-old track star. Enraged by the revelation, Zamora reportedly demanded he "make things right." What followed was a carefully planned and ultimately fatal ambush. In December 1995, Adrianne was lured out under false pretenses and murdered. The shocking nature of the crime and the young age of those involved drew widespread media attention. In 1997, the story was adapted into a made-for-TV movie titled Love's Deadly Triangle: The Texas Cadet Murder, starring Holly Marie Combs and David Lipper. The film dramatizes the events leading up to the murder and offered viewers a glimpse into the psychological unraveling that led to such a tragic outcome. More than two decades later, the case remains a haunting example of how unchecked emotions and toxic loyalty can have irreversible consequences. Made For TV Movie Series: No One Would Tell - The Murder of Amy Carnevale
Send us a text Amy Carnevale was a vibrant 14-year-old girl from Massachusetts—kind, popular, and full of promise. In what seemed like a typical teenage romance, she began dating an older boy. But as their relationship unfolded, so did a pattern of control, jealousy, and escalating red flags that too many people overlooked. Her tragic story would later inspire the 1996 TV movie No One Would Tell, serving as a powerful reminder of the dangers of ignoring abuse—even when it’s happening in plain sight. The Chain: The Murder of Kimberly Holton
Send us a text In October 2003, a decomposed body surfaced off the coast of Cape May, New Jersey. Chained at the ankles, bound in duct tape, and gnawed by sea life — this was no accident. Within hours, the body was identified as 16-year-old Kimberly Holton, a missing foster child from Dover, Delaware. Kimberly’s case would unravel a chilling chain of events involving foster care failures, jealousy, betrayal, and a horrifying method of body disposal few could imagine. Investigators would trace a single link of chain to a hardware store… uncover a disturbing love triangle… and find themselves staring at a grainy surveillance video that would blow the case open. This is the haunting true story of Kimberly Holton — the girl they tried to silence, and the case that refused to sink. Sleeping With The Enemy: The Laurie Kellogg Story
Send us a textLaurie Kellogg was just 16 when she met a man more than twice her age — a man who would later become her husband. To some, it looked like a scandal from the start. But no one could have predicted how it would end: with a gunshot in the middle of the night... and a group of teenagers caught in the middle of a murder plot. Was Laurie Kellogg a calculating instigator? Or was she a teenager trapped in a life she couldn’t escape? What really happened behind closed doors — and who should be held responsible?  Sources:  https://www.pennlive.com/crime/2021/06/the-injuries-to-the-brain-were-devastating-the-murder-of-bruce-kellogg-30-years-ago.html https://andyman122.tripod.com/helpfreelauriekellogg/id8.html https://law.justia.com/cases/pennsylvania/superior-court/1994/435-pa-super-581-2.html https://www.syracuse.com/news/2017/08/exclusive_interview_man_who_pulled_trigger_as_teen_in_laurie_kellogg_case_speaks.html https://www.newyorkupstate.com/news/2017/03/laurie_kelloggs_release_trial_was_shocking_small-town_tale_of_sex_betrayal_viole.html https://www.newyorkupstate.com/finger-lakes/2016/06/throwback_thursday_laurie_kellogg_arrested_for_conspiring_to_kill_husband.html *This podcast is independently produced using publicly available information and personal research. Two Thorned Rose: The Case of Matthew Trussler and Melissa Turner
Send us a text Melissa Turner, a former cosplay model from Riverview, Florida, called 911 on October 18, 2019, reporting that she had found her fiancé, Matthew Trussler, unresponsive and covered in blood on their patio. Initially telling police she didn’t know what had happened, Turner later stated that Matthew had attacked her during a drunken altercation and that she acted in self-defense. However, investigators uncovered home surveillance footage capturing the sounds of a heated argument hours earlier, during which a woman's voice—believed to be Turner’s—could be heard shouting angrily. Authorities also noted delays in seeking help and inconsistencies in her statements.  Sources:  https://www.peacocktv.com/watch/playback/vod/GMO_00000000488441_01/29b41bb9-fcf3-3b72-b8f4-4b8471724fc7?paused=true https://www.cbsnews.com/pictures/matthew-trussler-murder/ https://www.cbsnews.com/video/surveillance-footage-gives-clues-to-what-happened-when-matthew-trussler-was-killed-prosecutors-say/ *This podcast is independently produced using publicly available information and personal research. Residue: A True Crime Podcast
