Candidates For The Crown Of Life

Welcome to The Refinery.Last week, we opened our study of James’s epistle and discovered that he wastes no time in getting straight to the heart of Christian living. With the briefest of introductions, James plunges into the central theme of his letter: how believers are to handle trials, temptations, and persecutions. The Christian life is not an escape from difficulty but a call to endure with faith and perseverance. In our last message, “When Temptation Comes”, we saw how trials are not random interruptions but opportunities for God to shape our faith. Today, we continue with “Candidates for the Crown of Life.” Here, James takes us beyond merely surviving trials—he points us toward the eternal reward God has promised for those who endure. Our key text is James 1:12:“Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.”This verse holds out both a present promise and a future reward. It calls us to endurance, offers us blessing in the here and now, and assures us of a crown in the life to come.Until next time

When Temptation Comes

The Christian life is a life of faith, but not of theory—it is meant to be lived out daily. That is why the book of James is such an important letter for us. Unlike Paul, who often writes in-depth theology, James writes about the practical expression of our faith in daily living.

James was a half-brother of Jesus, and during Christ’s earthly ministry he did not believe. But after the resurrection, James’ life was transformed. He rose to become the leader of the Jerusalem church, respected for his wisdom, his prayer life, and his devotion to God.

James wrote this letter to Jewish Christians scattered across the Roman world—people facing persecution, hardship, and daily temptations. His purpose was not to give them more doctrine, but to teach them how to live faithfully in the middle of real struggles.

And where does he begin? With trials and temptations. James wastes no time in telling believers that faith is not proven in comfort, but in conflict. Our faith must be tested if it is to be trusted.

Let’s read together James 1:1–4 from the New King James Version.

Until next time

Pouring Out Our Hearts to the World: Fulfilling God's Call for Us!

Hey everyone I’m Gary Hoban and welcome to Refinery Life Australia.

Today we are talking about Pouring Out Our Hearts to the World: Fulfilling God's Call for Us!

Romans 15:23-25 NKJV

23 But now no longer having a place in these parts, and having a great desire these many years to come to you,

24 whenever I journey to Spain, [a]I shall come to you. For I hope to see you on my journey, and to be helped on my way there by you, if first I may enjoy your company for a while.

25 But now I am going to Jerusalem to [b]minister to the saints.

Romans 15:29-33 NKJV

29 But I know that when I come to you, I shall come in the fullness of the blessing [a]of the gospel of Christ.

30 Now I beg you, brethren, through the Lord Jesus Christ, and through the love of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in prayers to God for me,

31 that I may be delivered from those in Judea who [b]do not believe, and that my service for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints,

32 that I may come to you with joy by the will of God, and may be refreshed together with you.

33 Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen.

Introduction

Good morning, precious saints of God! Today, we gather together in His presence to delve into an important message from Romans 15:23-25, 29-33. As we open our Bibles to this passage, let us ask the Holy Spirit to guide and speak through us as we seek to understand what God wants to reveal today!

Exposition:

Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, we see Paul making a passionate plea to the Roman believers regarding the importance of reaching out to those who have not yet heard the Good News. Paul's heart was filled with compassion for his fellow Jews and Gentiles who were still lost in their sin, desperately needing the salvation that only Jesus can provide!

The Discipline Of Discipleship.

Hey everyone I’m Gary Hoban and welcome to Refinery Life Australia.

Today we are talking about The Discipline Of Discipleship.

As the church worldwide and indeed this church are in a time of change, I would like us to consider two words, Discipline and Discipleship.

Actually discipleship means discipline.

The disciple is one who has been taught  and trained by the Master.

He or she has come with ignorance, superstition, and sin to find truth and forgiveness from the Saviour.

Without discipline we are not disciples, even though we profess Jesus’ name.

Recent generations have resented and rebelled against discipline.

Liberty and license have replaced law and order.

Furthermore, permissiveness has become a lifestyle with most people, including Christians.

This lack of discipline is the enemy of faithfulness to God.

It weakens compassion, because it places the first and primary emphasis on self.

Bust just what do we mean by discipline?

One dictionary defines it as “training that corrects, molds, or perfects the mental faculties or moral character”.

Without difficulty, we can translate this definition into the spiritual realm.

As growing, maturing, Christians, we will constantly be undergoing correction and molding, all leading to the ultimate perfection we will experience when we stand in Christ’s presence.

Until next time

Becoming a Christian

Hey everyone and welcome to Refinery Life Australia.

“The Christ of John’s Gospel” has been our theme for the past couple of months teachings with a focus on John’s unique portrayal of the Christ.

Today we are talking about Becoming a Christian.

Do you desire to be a better Christian?

Most Christians sincerely want to be better.

But how do we become a better Christian?

Some people say that reading the Bible or other Christian books will make you a good Christian.

Other people say that doing a lot of good works will make you a better Christian.

Actually, we don’t begin the Christian life in faith and continue it ,]merely through faithful study and good works.

Genuine faith results in faithful study and good works.

Jesus used the illustration of the vine and the branches to describe the Christian life.

Jesus referred to Himself and the Vine and to His followers as the branches.

Using this analogy, we can learn more about the Christian life.

God wants to enter your life and abide within you through the person of the Holy Spirit.

If you allow Him, He will abide in your heart and make your life meaningful.

Until next time

The Helmet of salvation

Welcome to The Refinery. The helmet of salvation. To go onto maturity in the character of the Lord and move forward into the destiny God has prepared for you we need to wear spiritual armor, the helmet of salvation is one of these items. The head is very vulnerable in the natural and it is the same in the spiritual context. The Bible tells us in Ephesians 6 about the armour of God, there is a helmet – the helmet of salvation. This helmet is a covering, and it provides protection for the mind. Ps Amanda wants to encourage you to put the helmet on.Until next time

The Promise of The Holy Spirit.

Hey everyone I’m Gary Hoban and welcome to Refinery Life Australia.

“The Christ of John’s Gospel” has been our theme for the past couple of months teachings with a focus on John’s unique portrayal of the Christ.

Today we are talking about The Promise of The Holy Spirit.

Saying goodbye can be difficult.

People struggle with the words when a friend or family member will be going away for a long period of time.

Likewise, the disciples had a hard time saying farewell to the Master.

Jesus had prepared them for the fact of His death, but they were not willing to accept this reality.

The closer the time came for Jesus’ departure, the more they recognised the reality.

The Lord and His disciples had a difficult time leaving each other.

Jesus told the disciples that His departure would be only for a short time.

John 14:19, “A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also.

Jesus promised that He would be with His disciples in the power and presence of His Spirit.

In other words, Jesus Himself would be present with His disciples in another manner.

Maybe believers need to examine the promise Jesus gave to His disciples about the Holy Spirit.

We need not be discouraged because the physical presence of Jesus is not with us.

He is present in the Holy Spirit.

We need to understand this and celebrate His presence!

Until next time

Going in the right direction.

Hey everyone and welcome to Refinery Life Australia.

Today we continue our series titled The Christ of John's Gospel.

In times like these, we are in need of God’s guidance more than ever.

Today we are talking about Going in the right direction.

Driving down a one way street in the wrong direction is a frustrating experience.

It seems to happen to me on a regular basis depending what country I am in.

And every time I am met with irritated drivers as I try and turn around which adds to my misery and embarrassment.

Now I carefully note each turn to ensure I go in the right direction.

Jesus talked about the direction of His life.

It involved a cross.

Yet He taught the disciples that the cross was the way of life for the world.

Thomas was not so sure he knew the right direction, so he asked in John 14:5, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?”

And we all know Jesus’ response, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Going the right direction through life is important.

It is a joyful experience.

Let’s learn the instructions for how to travel the right direction in life.

Until next time

The Feet Prepared For The Gospel of Peace.

Welcome to The Refinery.Satanic opposition is a reality Gods children face in this fallen world, but the Lord has given us spiritual armor for our protection. This is very important and relevant for right now in 2025.We are looking at the world that we find ourselves in and are acutely aware of the spiritual battle that rages, the battle between the good and evil, light and darkness. The spiritual forces of darkness are on assignment to kill, steal and destroy the hopes, dreams and destiny’s of Gods children, and while all of this plays out we can be prepared and stand in the whole armor of God. Let us be prepared and put on our shoes. The Eleventh Commandment.

Welcome to Refinery Life Australia.

“The Christ of John’s Gospel” has been our theme for the past couple of months teachings with a focus on John’s unique portrayal of the Christ.

We will continue this series for a little while longer while God is holding us here.

Today we are discussing, The Eleventh Commandment.

Charles Templeton, wrote that the history of the world has been affected by two events that took place in two small rooms, separated by thousands of miles and thousands of years.

One of these rooms was a dodgy flat in the Soho district of London.

In this small room, Karl Marx wrote Das capital, a book that changed the face of communism.

And is a direct opposition to what we as Christians believe.

The other room was in Jerusalem.

It was the place where Jesus ate the Passover with His disciples and have them some meaningful instructions.

Just as Jesus was about to go to the cross, He bequeathed His disciples a badge they would need to wear.

It would be a sign that they were in fact His disciples.

John 13:34-35, A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.

By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Jesus called His exhortation to love a “new command.”

We could label it the “eleventh commandment.”

This morning lets look at the various facets of this command.

The world desperately needs love, but the only way they can know true love is by watching Christian live in action.

Will we obey the eleventh commandment?

Will we love one another?

Until next time

Salvation Belongs to our God

Welcome to The Refinery

Pastor Amanda brings us a reminder that Salvation Belongs to Our God.

Let us pay attention and read the time.

While many are walking with their head in the sand, in oblivion and not giving the future, the eternal future a second thought, we are preparing ourselves as the Bride, we are preparing for the great harvest, we are praying for the lost to come in and we are taking steps to train and equip anyone with ears to hear that the day of the Lord is at hand.

There is a crisis going on in this world, people are confused, people are deceived, and people are divided, in so many ways.

The Day of the Lord is at Hand, and salvation belongs to Our God.

Be encouraged to get ready for the Lords return.

Until next time

You Are in Good Hands with God.

We will continue this series for a little while longer while God is holding us here.

Today we are discussing, You Are in Good Hands with God.

Your in good hands, this statement attracts people, because within every human there is a need and a desire for security.

People want their house, their cars, and especially their lives to be protected.

Jesus made a security claim for believers in John 10:28-29,  And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand.

The Lord gave a graphic illustration of security when He pictured the believer resting in the hands of the Heavenly Father.

Yet a person is in the hands of God for more reasons than just security.

Jesus’ words suggest other implications of being on God’s hands.

Until next time
