Episode 45 - A Year Into Sobriety She Still Felt Hungover {a conversation with Colleen Kachmann}

In this episode, Colleen Kachmann shares about her recovery journey from alcohol after 12 years of suffering from alcohol use disorder. She dives into the moment she made the decision to quit, the steps she took to support herself in her road to recovery, and how she learned that identifying as an alcoholic and promising to stay sober forever is a mistake. As Colleen explains, it's not about the alcohol, it's about your relationship with yourself. Tune in as Colleen gets real about how our thoughts are the real habit we need to break, and how she uses emotional sobriety to help women through their own recovery journey.

Colleen Kachmann is the host of the Recover With Colleen podcast (soon to be It's Not About the Alcohol: Holistic Recovery & Emotional Sobriety). She's a Master Coach helping women to reclaim their personal power through emotional sobriety. Most of her clients come to her looking to escape the alcohol trap. They quickly discover this is a thinking problem, not a drinking problem. And that identifying as an "alcoholic" who can't control herself only makes it worse. Colleen developed the 12-week Accelerated Recovery Process© using evidence-based strategies in neurophysiology and psychology to help women heal from shame and transform their sense of identity so they can learn how to trust themselves...with or without a drink in their hand.

In this episode, Colleen also talks about:

  • As powerful as it felt to speak her truth, it felt equally powerless to say she's an alcoholic and commit the rest of her life to being in recovery;
  • Her motivation to live a functional life while constantly hungover was tied to shame, and how shame continued to be the motivator long after sobriety, ultimately keeping her stuck;
  • She relied on perfection to feel happy and thought that being sober was the perfect way to be;
  • Awareness is the ability to tell the difference between what's going on in the mind and what's going on in the world;
  • Feelings are the only facts you need to deal with - your thoughts, limiting beliefs and self-negative thinking are what cause the feelings;
  • 99% of what we're thinking about is a product of our imagination;
  • How we feel is a product of what's going on in our head, not the outside world;
  • The belief that you can't control yourself is far more damaging than alcohol ever is;
  • We can't control the thoughts in our head but we can control how we respond to them;
  • You can't think yourself out of a thinking problem.
