Episode 42 - Lost & Found: "No Place Feels Like Home" {a conversation with Kimberlyn Owens-Hughes}

In this episode, Kimberlyn Owens-Hughes shares her unique story of moving to Chile and planting her roots there, where she fell in love, got married, and had a beautiful little girl. Her journey into motherhood, parenting with a partner from a different culture with different values, changed the trajectory of their relationship. Resulting in divorce, Kimberlyn shares about the anger and resentment this created, being stuck and tied down to Chile for a number of reasons, and really losing her sense of self. She has learned to persevere through the trials and tribulations, finding safety and connection in community, and learning to create her own home in being where her feet are. Tune in as Kimberlyn shares how she has learned to process her anger and resentment and how it has changed the way she parents.

Kimberlyn Owens-Hughes is an American, single mom to a 10-year-old daughter, living in Valparaiso, Chile for the past 17 years. She is an English teacher and translator turned online community creator and co-work space holder for other women. She is co-owner of The Village, a virtual co-work space and community for female freelancers, small business owners, and work-from-home moms. She and her business partner also publish weekly episodes on their Parenting and Productivity by Design podcast, which delves into human design and how we can use it to parent and work better, from a place of true alignment and ease.

In this episode, Kimberlyn also talks about:

  • Feeling completely blindsided by her former husband, the father of her child, when he chose to walk away without making any effort in their relationship;
  • How she was also cut out by her former sister-in-law who was her only support system at the time her husband left her;
  • In the midst of the chaos, feeling completely alone in a Country that was not her own, her home was broken into, leaving her feeling violated and even more lost;
  • All of the events that transpired, including single parenting in a foreign Country, Kimberlyn lost her sense of self leaving her feeling like she was a stranger to herself;
  • How she feels stuck and tied down in Chile, and if it weren't for having a daughter with a father whose roots are in Chile, she likely would not be living there anymore;
  • Even when she visits her family in the US, it also doesn't feel like home;
  • As she works through her anger and resentment, there is still sadness and grief that remains to be processed;
  • Rather than trying to rush the healing process, Kimberlyn is allowing herself the time and space, and giving herself grace as she continues to navigate the whirlwind of emotions that remain present;
  • Her daughter has been her biggest teacher on the importance of feeling and processing emotions, and how she parents differently due to her experiences.
