There are times where… I just want this moment for the Armenians… for them to feel like they are seen and for ... anglophones to just for a moment feel displaced. - Lara Arabian when you are uprooted from your culture… how do we construct this notion of ancestry? I think that doesn't necessarily have to do with blood ties.  Especially as cultural workers, artists - we are always looking for someone in the past that will inspire… who is able to navigate this world where the ground is always moving…. - Carla Melo Meet Lara Arabian and Carla Melo, the writer/performer and director/co- creator of “Siranoush'' a multimedia, multilingual one-woman show that was part of this year’s Rutas Festival. Lara Arabian is a trilingual Dora nominated Toronto-based performer by way of Beirut, Lebanon, upstate NY, and Paris, France. She is also a passionate arts educator and is on the faculty of Sheridan College in both the Musical Theatre and the Performing Arts Preparation programs. Carla Melo (Ph.D., UCLA) is a researcher, director and performer invested in creating and thinking critically about the intersections of performance, social engagement and activism. Through a decolonial and hemispheric lens, she has paid particular attention to performances from across the Americas, with a focus on Latin American, Afro-diasporic, immigrant and indigenous populations. Siranoush explores the writer/performer’s desire to dig deeper into her cultural roots, through a reimagining of a 19th century ethnic Armenian actress of that name, who was a trailblazer both on and off the stage. Tapping into ancestral knowledge and diasporic memory, the performance takes us across time and space to explore the power of theatre as a way of cultural survival and female empowerment. I am very proud and very happy and I always say if Santiago did it, you can do it too. - Santiago Guzmán Meet Santiago Guzmán, a writer, performer, director and producer for theatre and film originally from Metepec, Mexico, now based in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. He is the  Artistic Director of TODOS Productions and his work is very brown, very queer, and very real.  Santiago is the creator and performer of “Altar” that was part of this year’s Rutas Festival. Altar tells the story of Eugenio a queer young immigrant living in St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador. Less than a year has passed since his move from Mexico, but in that time, he experienced deep love and deeper heartbreak when his new boyfriend, Benjamin, inexplicably “ghosted” him. No, Benjamin isn’t dead; he just stopped calling and texting. And the thing is…Eugenio’s still not over it. Looking to the traditional Mexican holiday Día de Muertos (The Day of The Dead) and his father’s previous experience with paranormal activities, Eugenio decides to build an altar (a central part of the Día de Muertos ritual) in the hopes that he will be able to summon his boyfriend’s ‘ghost’ to sort out the end of their relationship once and for all. Through the altar, Eugenio realizes that he has been something of a ghost himself to the loved ones he left behind in Mexico. Will setting up an altar be enough for Eugenio to forgive, forget, and love again? Or enough to help him heal the relationships with his friends and family far away? Entonces, lo que venimos a hacer es incomodar de una manera poética la mirada de la gente.- Zuadd Atala Conoce a Zuadd Atala quien forma parte de Teatro Línea de Sombra. Desde 1996 Zuadd ha trabajado con diversos coreógrafos y directores de escena internacionales y nacionales. Su entrenamiento y búsqueda se fundamentan en las prácticas corporales, la instalación habitada y la escena documental. Zuadd es la Coreógrafa y performer de Danzantes del Alba, y también fue parte del concepto y la creación de Pequeños Territorios en Reconstrucción. Ambas producciones formaron parte del Festival Rutas 2022.  Pequeños Territorios en Reconstrucción es la historia de un lugar, de sus habitantes, al mismo tiempo que una reflexión de lo que significa vivir bajo una violencia crónica. Pequeños Territorios en Reconstrucción es un trabajo de investigación realizado alrededor de la llamada “Ciudad de la Mujeres”, en Turbaco, Colombia, en donde hace quince años, un grupo de mujeres desplazadas por el conflicto armado, fundó la “Liga de las mujeres desplazadas” y construyó 98 viviendas, con sus propias manos. Después de una corta estancia en aquel sitio, TLS se planteó una serie de interrogantes alrededor de esa comunidad. El caso que ahora se muestra puede ser entendido como una fábula documental donde se establecen algunas reflexiones éticas sobre los destinos posibles de aquel asentamiento suburbano, de las mujeres que lo construyeron y especialmente, de los niños que también lo habitan. Para llevar a cabo esta tarea escénica, dos mujeres utilizan un bloque de hormigón, la imagen de un hipopótamo y un paquete de cartas sin destinatario para hablar del desplaza­miento forzado, la violencia y el miedo al futuro. Danzantes del Alba es un carnaval fantasma de danza e historia, que celebra la resiliencia de trabajadores que han viajado a través de las rutas migratorias desde Centroamérica hasta México.  Un narrador nos invita a tomar nuestro lugar en el escenario, alrededor de tres círculos concéntricos y nos presenta los 36 trajes de carnaval del Loco de la Danza quienes con la ayuda de danzantes, y un documental que se proyecta en escena, nos cuenta las historias de los artesanos que construyeron estos trajes en maquiladoras opuestas a las maquilas industriales como: talleres artesanales o pequeñas industrias en cooperativa, un taller de viejos obreros comunistas con máquinas de coser en la sala de su casa, una migrante centroamericana que cose mientras se prepara para viajar al norte, una cooperativa de mujeres que rescataron un lugar abandonado y lo reconvirtieron en una pequeña industria textíl y en un espacio social y, un colectivo de activistas gay en la frontera con Guatemala. Estos espacios de trabajo operan bajo lógicas contrarias a la explotación indiferenciada de las empresas trasnacionales. Danzantes del Alba es una instalación documental y teatral de danza inspirada por un carnaval que se inició en uno de los pueblos en México a lo largo de las rutas de migración de Centroamérica. Usando máscaras y disfraces del Loco de la Danza, los migrantes participaban de la celebración sin ser denunciados a las autoridades.  Danzantes es por ende “un carnaval fantasma” ya que lo que queda, son los trazos de aquel carnaval, y las historias del cómo se crearon estos trajes. En Toronto, el equipo de Línea de Sombra, estará trabajando con seis intérpretes inmigrantes de las Américas, manteniendo así viva la experiencia migratoria. And I felt as if I finally found the art form that is generous enough and that englobes all the other art forms, because puppetry is the meeting of the art of the scene, art of the stage, and the visual arts and music. Her approach to puppetry and art has a strong spiritual influence inherited from both her indigenous Guarani and Tikuna ancestry. Peter and the Wolf, the classic story and music by Sergei Prokofiev, bursts to life with glorious puppets crafted in ateliers in Brazil. Created by master craftsmen and artist Nina Vogel, from the very musical instruments featured in the symphony, the visually stunning costume from which the puppets appear and disappear delights children with an unforgettable performance as they experience the fable for the first time. Supported by Toronto’s Euphonia Chamber Ensemble with Musical Direction by award-winning Conductor, Composer and Pianist Maziar Heidari, Nina Vogel presents this ingenious and beautiful spectacle with an accompanying short film, ANIMA, which takes the audience on the fantastical journey that Nina Vogel followed to create this contemporary interpretation of Peter & the Wolf. I think I feel a responsibility to complicate the conversation and again bring ... what’s actually happening on the ground. You know, if you don’t work in the oil and gas industry it’s easy to look at it and be like ‘yeah… what are we doing over there, that’s terrible, we should stop that.’ But if you are someone who is working in it, it’s not that simple. We’re not gonna get anywhere if those two components of the world aren’t talking to each other.                  - Claren Grosz In this episode, we chat with Claren Grosz. She is a queer Toronto based theatre and visual artist. Her theatre practice focuses on physical, visually compelling work and holistic, non-hierarchical theatre making processes. Also, she is the artistic director of Pencil Kit Productions. Claren is the creator and performer of “I Love The Smell of Gasoline”, opening  at 2022 RUTAS Festival. In “I Love The Smell of Gasoline”, Claren attempts to reconcile her Alberta oil-industry roots with the current environmental emergency. The project was born of a frustration with divisive Canadian politics, rampant hypocrisy, and a lack of team spirit when facing impending doom. It unpacks some of the forces that drive global warming and Western alienation in a personal account of what it is to live in a modern, capitalist environment, be a self-serving organism, and also care about the earth and fellow creature kind.  Our co-host for this episode is Theresa Cutknife, a Nehiyaw and Puerto Rican actor, writer, curator, storyteller, and emerging producer from Maskwacîs, Alberta, located on Treaty 6 Territory, who is a member of the Samson Cree Nation.  I really want truths on stage, these are the truths. These women as you see the piece you are gonna hear the voices of these women.  And the Actors at the top acknowledge they are the ones saying the stories of these particular women; they are not pretending that they are these women. The actor becomes a vehicle that is being used for these voices to be heard - Beatriz Pizano (It was) a very emotional journey to cut down their stories and just scale them down to the genesis of their particular story that we wanted to highlight… it was a challenging, and joyful, and emotional playwriting experience extremely different from fiction. -  Anna Chatterton   We have to be united as humans, humanity, to be able to bring the change. Children of Fire is an intimate portrayal of the Kurdish female freedom fighters that hosted Shahrzad Arshadi and Anna Chatterton in the mountains of Kurdistan in 2018. Co-created with a mix of verbatim theater and first-person confessional, this play follows the journey and layered relationship across cultures between Shahrzad and Anna, and asks what is at the heart of living bravely as a woman and an activist. His work has been recognized with numerous awards celebrating his unique contributions to Canadian theatre, including the Barbara Hamilton Memorial Award, the Canadian Association for Theatre Research Honorary Member Award, and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.
