An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, by Ambrose Bierce

William Slusser reads Ambrose Bierce’s “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge,” one of the most famous short stories in American literature. Bierce’s Civil War tale, originally published in 1890 in the San Francisco Examiner, has an oft-imitated spooky twist ending; the story was even presented as an episode of The Twilight Zone. Narrator Bill Slusser is himself the author of the Civil War-themed play John Brown’s Body, presented in 2018 at the San Miguel Playhouse.

Music: “Marche au Supplice,” Hector Berlioz.

Directed by Fredric Dannen.
