Born into slavery in Swartekill, New York, she escaped with her infant daughter to freedom in 1826. In 1828, she went to court to recover her son — and became the first Black woman in the United States to win such a case against a white man. That was the beginning of her legend. But she was never free in life the way freedom was promised. Tonight she speaks again, reminding the world: “They call it freedom, but I was never free.” This is not reenactment, not impersonation.
