PEPR meets Ana Tijoux (in English)

Planet Earth Planet Rap met with Ana Tijoux recently to talk about her experiences in music and in life. Ana was born in France into a Chilean family in exile and returned back home after the dictatorship had ended. She was part of the seminal Chilean crew Makiza and her solo career has taken her around the world performing her critically acclaimed music. Ana Tijoux has been one of our PEPR favourites since we started the radio operation as part of Chuck D’s RAPstation and And You Don’t Stop! radio show. In this interview which in its entirety will be on our YouTube account as well as in our podcast feed, she talks candidly about her experiences in English. Meeting her was a great privilege and she was such a warm and generous person. Many thanks to her.

Chuck D and how the Hip-Hop planet was born

The Virtual World Tour is PEPR's podcast series where we talk to some of our favourite artists from around the world.

Welcome to our season finale!  In this episode we talk to Chuck D who needs no introduction. It's a cliche, but not many more important people in this culture that we celebrate.

What a joy and honour to chat with Chuck who of course is also at the helm of RAPstation which we are part of with Planet Earth Planet Rap.

ABOUT #PEPR  Hip-Hop culture and Rap music as part of it are global. For years, this has been entirely uncontroversial statement and true on all accounts. Despite the consensus on the spread of the culture, the rest of the world, outside of North America, has been often reduced into its consumers. So when people say, Hip-Hop is worldwide, what they often actually mean is that mainstream, mostly major label top 40 rap artists are listened to across the planet. That is true, but it is not the whole truth. It is actually  only a very small part of it.  Planet Earth Planet Rap (PEPR) is part of Chuck D’s And You Don’t Stop! radio show and RAPstation operation and its purpose is to explore and celebrate the full rap map from all continents and in whatever language it reaches us. We acknowledge the global culture and the people in it as participants, not just consumers.

PEPR is curated and hosted by Mikko Kapanen and Amkelwa Mbekeni who have years of experience from radio in different countries and continents and produced by Gia’na Garel.

Sampa The Great talks about the Black renaissance of Australian Hip-Hop, her art and Africanness as well as being her unlimited full range artist and person

The Virtual World Tour is PEPR's podcast series where we talk to some of our favourite artists from around the world.

In this episode we talk to Sampa The Great who is a Zambian artist raised in Botswana, she also lived in Australia and now she is back in Zambia. She has had an amazing run recently with North American tour including Coachella, her song "Energy" in the Netflix show Ozark and new single "Lane" with a guest feature by Denzel Curry. We caught up with her after all this and days before she was going to Australia to perform two nights at the Sydney Opera House. Oh, she also was featured on the Grammy winning album by the legend of African music Angélique Kidjo.

But Sampa The Great is much more than these accolades and achievements. Her story is fascinating so join us when we catch up with her on the PEPR: The Virtual World Tour and talk about her life, art and among many other things her role in the Black renaissance of Australian Hip-Hop.

UK's Lowkey went from freestyle cyphers to political debates as the whole music industry was on the move

This episode of PEPR: The Virtual World Tour we talk to Lowkey who is a UK emcee having some of his roots in Iraq as well.

We have a long term relationship with his music and he has navigated the music game from selling mixtapes from his bag to MySpace and more algorithm driven music environments and its downsides.

We also talk about the importance of Tupac, the Grenfell tragedy and his return to music.

It's a good one - don't miss it.
