They say, “Life begins at 40.” But just how differently do we view everything we experience when we’ve hit the dreaded middle age? Paul & Scott’s Midlife Point looks for the humour in everything, while at the same time exploring more serious topics like mental health and well-being. Join us for a lighthearted yet thoughtful look at life from the point of view of two men in their early 40s who find themselves treading a fine line between inevitable weariness and hopeful rejuvenation.

Paul & Scott's Midlife Point
I haven't got fists of thunder

Paul is confused by an endlessly repeating public announcement in WH Smiths; Scott has proven that you actually can slip on a banana skin

Plus: walking to help with mental well-being; accidentally going to the wrong toilet; and being burgled after seeing Gerry & The Pacemakers

Paul & Scott's Midlife Point
The National Beer Awards

Paul is boycotting several radio stations because of a particular advert; Scott doesn’t have his scraper to remove ice from his car’s windscreen, but luckily he does have his driving licence

Plus: what does it take to become an award-winning podcast? Will Paul ever find a cap that fits his head? And why is removing ear hair so much fun?

Paul & Scott's Midlife Point
The impending Burger King

Paul and Scott have just ordered a Burger King delivery from Just Eat and are aiming to have the podcast recorded before it arrives. Like supermarket shopping while hungry, this probably isn’t the ideal time to record a podcast, as all they can think about is food.

Plus: Scott is planning vengeance on a seagull; pillows are turning yellow; and Paul hasn’t seen any Alfred Hitchcock films.

Represent the plate

Paul is happy to just eat meat at a barbecue; Scott isn’t happy unless potato salad is also there as an option

Plus: will the cinema slowly die out? Could buying reduced price food from a supermarket be considered a hobby? And how do you avoid stray cats in Thailand?

Paul & Scott's Midlife Point
Stevie Wonder listens to all the podcasts

Scott is haunted by teenage memories of his mother constantly listening to the song ‘You’re Gorgeous’ by Babybird; Paul finds out something about his childhood that he probably would’ve preferred not to know at all

Plus: how many versions of ourselves do we become throughout life? Why is Paul convinced he has someone else’s GCSE results? And is there a link between Scott being run over and someone trying to assassinate Donald Trump?

Paul & Scott's Midlife Point
Non-player character

Paul is turning passive aggressive to anyone who doesn’t say “thank you” when he holds a door open for them; Scott is hanging out in LA and Vegas and hoping to buy a hotdog at a baseball game

Plus: hiccups…why?

(Please note that while Scott has hiccups at the start of this episode, they go away within the first couple of minutes, and this particular episode is saved from being an absolute editing nightmare...)

As always, Paul expects the worst from his next haematology appointment; Scott is at Heathrow Airport, ready to fly to America, but he's forgotten to do one very important thing…

Plus: Scott’s eyesight has improved, but can it ever really match Paul’s? And when is the best time to call on Bob Marley?

Barry from Auf Wiedersehen, Pet

Paul can’t work out the connection between his chronic leukaemia and reigniting an interest in wrestling; Scott needs to stop living vicariously through other people on YouTube

Plus: how do we combat Sunday anxiety? Why are accents so fascinating? And should we complain if the hand dryer in a pub toilet is blowing out cold air?

The ankle of the tree

Paul thinks getting cosy of an evening might be better than a good night out these days; Scott is looking forward to Sunday when he can have a nice bubble bath and change the bed sheets

Plus: can we recondition ourselves in the way we approach work? Are crowds of people more difficult to deal with since lockdown? And just where do ducks go at nighttime?

A pint of beans

Paul would like to be at his own funeral before he dies; Scott has received his wife’s plans for her funeral way too far in advance

Plus: are we too impatient with our microwaves? How many stamp collectors like to jump out of aeroplanes? And how good was your Channel 5 reception back in 1997?

Temperamental radiator

Paul is confident he won’t be drinking any alcopops again any time soon; Scott is nostalgic for buying out-of-date Battenburg from the market in Dunstable

Plus: at what point in the new year should we stop saying, “Happy New Year”? Why is Charlie Brooker’s ignorance something to be happy about? And what exactly is ‘Gooch Week’?

Paul & Scott's Midlife Point
Back to the Future is not a Christmas movie

To quote Noddy Holder: "It's Christmas!" Paul is at the stage of life where he's looking forward to watching Call the Midwife on Christmas Day; Scott's only Christmas joy seems to be a fleeting festive feeling in Greggs

Plus: can you feel Christmassy in a hot country when you're used to the UK's cold weather during the festive period? Is a crap, thoughtless gift better than no gift at all? And how much should we be sharing on social media?

Man. Night. Woodland.

Scott is concerned about his health and goes to Devon to get away from it all. He takes a walk to a lovely rustic pub. It doesn’t go well.

Plus: what does it mean when a rabbit turns vicious? And just how should we answer when someone we don’t know asks how we are?

I live by the oven clock

Scott is forming spiritual connections with Uber drivers; Paul is happy to give them a 5-star rating even when they drive off with his dad only halfway in the car

Plus: can Paul visit a Turkish barber even though he’s bald? And has Scott found out the real reason for daylight saving?
