It's summer in our area, and unfortunately, there are fires by us both. Join Brett, Breana, and Special Guest Caleb for some fire safety tips of what to do before, during, and after fires! Caleb, who just so happens to be Breana's husband, is a volunteer firefighter. He gives some of his own tips and knowledge of things to keep in mind. Brett makes sure to cover Wildfires, an unfortunate constant in our lives. At no surprise to anyone, Breana also talks about the benefits of insurance. Come join us for an hour discussion on fire safety.

020: Wooden Phones for Wooden Towns

We have come back to our semi-regular podcasting schedule. We have missed each other and definitely missed y'all! After a few minutes of chit chat and forgetting to give our podcast name...oops? Also, this time it's not just Bre who is not sure she is saying things correctly. We get down to business. Brett goes back to 1871 for an enormous fire that jumped over a river! The Peshtigo fire was buried in history because it was the same day of the Chicago Fire. How some people survived was genius!

Then Breana comes into the scene with another flood scene. Another story that got a bit buried in the news because of COVID-19. End of May evacuations went down, and there were some dam fractures & bursts.

Did you know you could buy us a "coffee"..or beer, or whatever to help up create this podcast? https://www.buymeacoffee.com/pdspodcast
Below are some of the information we mentioned we would add - as well as Breana's references since she spaced and forgot to adds them.

019: Just Wear a Mask Already

It's been said again and again - history repeats itself. In 1918 there was a pandemic that took over the globe. This episode Brett and Breana share the subject of the 1918 Pandemic. We go over how it affected the world, how it spread so much, what we learned from it, how some scientists with garden tools are badass, and sometimes fire extinguishers aren't enough to preserve specimens. Come listen to our sweet sweet voices and cackles take you back into time.

We actually recorded this early April - thought it is still relevant almost 3 months later. There are many locations in the United States that are getting surges of positive tests and hospitalizations. We ask everyone to listen to the experts and follow the suggested guidelines:
- Wash your hands

- Social Distance when possible

- Wear a mask

If you have questions about mask safety and efficiency, this article from Stanford University is informative and helpful: http://med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/2020/06/stanford-scientists-contribute-to-who-mask-guidelines.html

Breana covers a rare event that went down in New York on May 22, 2008. Five friends run around the city trying to escape disaster surrounding them. Then Brett talks about some strange phenomenons that have happened over history. Please enjoy this extra episode. If you are looking at some social interaction let us know! We would love to host a virtual happy hour or movie night. Here are the suggestions we gave in the episode to stay occupied.

018: I Don't Practice Sultana, Ain't Go no 1874 Locust Cloud.

Gasp! Wow! Whoa! Erg! UHH! We will not leave you today without some great reactions and sound effects. Breana starts first this time to tell you about the Sultana sinking in 1865. The circumstances that lead to many deaths will make you angry as well. But who gets the blame...well, we will tell you.

Then..yes...locust. As Brett tells us about the Locus that literally took over farms in 1874, you can hear Breana try to hold her gags in. Y'all, locust stew! How did this affect farms and agriculture? What did the locust avoid? We shall tell you that too! Oh yeah, if we get 1,000 5 stars reviews, Brett will eat locus stew!

We didn't get to talk about this since we recorded almost 3 weeks ago - and a lot has changed since then, so:

017: Listen to the People: Haiti 2010 Earthquake and Lake Peigneur

Every time we discuss our disasters, we seem to find some kind of link. This time it seems to be something about governmental involvement post disasters.

With special guest Mark Snyder, Brett tells us all the intense details of the Haiti 2010 Earthquake. Mark was in Haiti after and gives us some information we didn't hear over the news. This includes the current state of Haiti now.

Breana tells us about what a bit of miscalculation can do! Lake Peigneur turned into a full-fledge whirlpool - but how? What happened next? Take a listen to find out!

Mark includes some very important organizations to contact if you would like to assist those in Haiti now - like http://www.ijdh.org/

016: Particularly Dangerous Cornfield Meet Crossover

This episode is especially special to us! We had the PLEASURE of getting to podcast with Michele of The Cornfield Meet! She co-hosts an amazing transportation-focused disaster podcast that we’ve mentioned a couple of times.

Brett starts us off with a blizzard in 1913 that dumped inches upon inches of snow onto Denver. (You get to hear about how tall we are with this one.) Learn about what they had to do to just get around town, and the silly things the newspaper dealt with.

Next Breana goes over the infamous Mount St. Helens eruption! After mentioning it in previous episodes she realizes she should just do it already!

Michele has a little shorty for us too! She gave us some amazing facts, and jokes, throughout the episode, but she did not forget a story. She tells us about how dioxin was spread all over the little town of Times Beach, Missouri. You get to learn how this town formed, how the dioxin got all over, AND just what dioxin can do to the body. Don’t forget how long it stays with the body too!

This episode causing too much fun!?! Us too! That’s why we will be coming out with a bonus episode of us chatting. Learn about how we all got into podcasting, some real-life stories of our own disasters, and what is an episode without some terrible puns?! Coming soon!

015: Hell or High Water!

Holy Forking Shirt Balls! Somehow, Breana actually guesses what Brett is going to cover...well, sort of. Have you heard of the city of Centralia? Welp, here you go! There is an ongoing fire UNDER the city. This may be Bre's favorite disaster that Brett has covered since it seems so unreal. Then we get a rundown of the 1993 Great Midwest Flood. Finally, Breana touches on a natural disaster. Okay, mostly natural. Wait until you hear about what James Scott decides to do so he can party hardy! Let's just pretend that at some point Breana doesn't say Jack, and continues to say James.

014: A Year Without Summer and a Summer of Fires

Your favorite disaster babes are at it again. Holy Flamin' Balls there is a lot of heat and more ice in this episode. Breana starts with the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire that she remembers since it was close to her. When you mix teens, fireworks, and a forest, you get multiple people stranded in a burning forest overnight, and many still closed off trails. Brett thought she was gonna review the Great Flood of 1862...but, oops, that was done. So she hits us with another 1800 gnarly time. Apparently, if a huge volcano goes off it can create winter in the summertime around the world. Check out the second half of this episode to hear about this volcano and how it took the heat away from much of the world. you'll be shocked to hear it.

And we back, and we back. Hello, our podcast listenin' friends. The Babes of Disasters want to tell you some tales of destruction. Brett takes us back to November in 1940 that took the city over on Armistice day. Of course, there are some degrees of separation that Brett keeps from us for a good few minutes, but don't worry. She does let us know. After that Bre wants to talk about some gas-filled contraption that took people over the Atlantic ocean. Like many, you too have heard of Hindenburg, but do you really KNOW about it? Well, you get to hear about it now.

*** For Australia Bushfire Relief Options, please visit: linktr.ee/pdspodcast ***

Winter Break is done, and the episode is up! This episode is dedicated to Michele of The Cornfield Meet. If you haven't listened to The Cornfield Meet yet you definitely should! She with another co-host - either Mel or Andy depending on the subject - covers a variety of transportation disasters. She sent us some amazing research for this episode.

Brett revisits one of the tornados that happened during the 2011 Super Outbreak. Joplin experienced quite the feat! Breana covers the Love Canal. It is one of those man-made disasters of a different kind. It will make you wonder what other companies do with THEIR toxic chemical waste.

010: Came Out of Nowhere!

Holy crap! Where did THAT come from? In this shorter episode, Breana talks about a meteor that essentially exploded in the air over Russia. Were those people shocked! Brett takes us back further in time for an Avalanche in the Pacific Northwest (1910 Wellington Avalanche) that took down a train with it and halted the movement of others. One had death, one didn't. Have a listen to find out which.

Was the storm of a Century

Where the mountains got the most

It was chilly and cold

No power around

Well, I am told

This snow will be sticking to the ground

Brett will reveal to us

How it all went down

It gave the states quite a fuss

affecting town to town

but it is not over quite yet

Bre will tell us about a ship

Three days later came a threat

Titanic did not last

After it hit an iceberg

There were icebergs in the forecast

One of them became a slicer

So let's take a moment to relax

And listen to the your hosts tell tales

Both with quite the emotional tax

Of what can happen when you set sails
