Part Filipino
On Race, Nationality, and Ethnicity (plus tacos)!

I've seen a wide range of comments on what makes a person a "Filipino." Some say it is citizenship along with knowing the culture and language. Others say it is the "one-drop rule"--as long as you have at least one drop of Filipino blood, you are Filipino. Others say it is something in between.

In my view, part of the disparity in these types of comments comes from the difficulty associated with defining race, nationality, and ethnicity.

In this episode of the Part Filipino Podcast, I'm taking that issue head-on!

I will address the issues I ran into trying to find the answer to the question "Is Filipino a race?"

I will also share the definitions of race, nationality, citizenship, and ethnicity that I'm happy with.

I'll then chart out how "Filipino" fits within these definitions.

Finally, I share how this chart and an understanding of these categories of Filipino-ness can help someone who is exploring their Filipino identity (like me!)

I will discuss the following issues:

04:15 - How Pleasant Grove, Utah is connected to the Philippines.

09:52 - What happened to the Manila Churchhouse in Pleasant Grove.

"Am I Filipino Enough?"

I once Googled "Do I count as Filipino?" (well, actually I had a typo and Googled "Do I count as Filipion"). I was surprised to find that many people were asking this same type of question, but without the typo. So in this episode of the Part Filipino Podcast, I am looking at these questions and the responses.
