Chapter 16 shows us the real man behind the pen, the true heart behind this apostle of Jesus Christ... The gentleness that's behind his strength... And it teaches what the heart in ministry is to be towards the people of God. This is truly his family and he treats them as such. In chapter 15 Paul will continue to discuss how we are to receive one another, how united and yielding and loving God glorifying assemblies are to conduct themselves. When everyone sees themselves as part of the gospel work, everyone gets restored into the knit-together oneness that God always planned for us. If there is nothing we are willing to lay down for others, no burden we bear to help those for whom Christ died, how deep truly is our love for the brothers? Romans chapter 14 will teach us how to avoid potential conflicts and how to walk in love in light of the big gospel picture, calling on what we have learned regarding justification by faith and the sacrifice of Christ. It will address practical issues in the Church that would be important for the first century Christians. These are issues of personal choice, conscience, and practice, but they are not the basis for Christian fellowship. They might not be necessarily issues we deal with, but they can make us think of many matters that can cause disunity among the brothers. The issue of Christian responsibility to civil authority is the focus of this chapter. We no longer rule over our own lives, submitting to the desires of our flesh. Rather, we submit ourselves to God as living sacrifices. As believers we have a “dual citizenship:” one of earthly address and one of the heavenly kingdom. And we need to learn how we are to be right towards both, as those who now belong to the Holy God.  We're called to be here, in and among those of this world, until Christ returns. In this next section of Romans, we see the application of Christian doctrine to Christian conduct. It is about how our beliefs will be seen in our behavior. We must never forget that the distinctive mark of Christianity is love. The love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit and we cannot be separated from His love. You are loved by God! But are you loving? We are to let this manner of love govern and shape all of our relationships in life. Romans 12:1 and 2 called us to be a "living sacrifice". Now, the verses that follow move us into our life together as the Church, the Body of Christ. This chapter will discuss more specifics of our life together, our unity, our thoughts of each other, and our functions in the Church. It calls all members to participate in gospel living, no one is supposed to sit on the sidelines. The Christian life is properly lived in honor of the whole body of Christ and this is one of the greatest ways we live out as a living sacrifice. Romans 12 calls us to present ourselves as a "living sacrifice", no longer to be conformed to the World, but living out to the will of God with thinking and hearts measured by the faith of the Gospel. The next chapters urge us to be thoroughly transformed form our old life and to live with all our heart, soul, mind and strength in worship to the true God. It's giving encouragement for how to live as those who follow the lord Jesus and worship the true God. Paul will call all who read into obedience of the faith, teaching us how to live and be God's people. Knowing the scope of God’s plan should cause us to stand in awe of His wisdom. He has revealed Himself by the gospel of our salvation salvation, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. Chapter 11 will continue to discuss God’s election by grace. Although most of Israel disagreed with the gospel, those who are humble to His plan can’t help but praise His ways. His plan is not to be questioned by humans pridefully judging Him. All can believe the gospel and be credited with the righteousness of Jesus Christ by grace. Romans chapter 10 is an invitation to salvation by believing in our hearts that Jesus is Lord and that God has raised him from the dead. It is human participation that is the wheels to this message of salvation: that all people need to call upon the name of the Lord to be saved. But how do they call on him unless they believe in him? And how do they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how do they hear unless someone preaches? And how will they preach unless they're sent? As this new, united, redeemed family of God, it’s now our chance to participate again with this beautiful message. For the next 3 chapters we will see Paul addressing the Jews in light of this eternal Gospel plan and purpose of God. Israel had, for the most part, rejected their own Messiah, leaving some to wonder how God’s chosen people had not received God’s promise. If God always planned to let in the Gentiles, what were all those Jewish promises and covenants for? Had God abandoned his people? Has He been unrighteous to Israel? God is for us! Despite the unworthiness of humanity thoroughly displayed in the opening of Romans, though there are many enemies we face in a hostile world, ultimately none of them matter, because they cannot compare to or prevail against God. He has shown us that He is for us by working all things for good. He called us according to His purpose, He foreknew us, He predestinated us to be conformed to the image of Christ, justified us and glorified us. God has shown His love and goodness in that He spared not His only son but gave him up for us all! He gave us eternal victory in Christ! Nothing will be able to separate us from God’s love that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans presents us God's worldview. It helps us to see reality as it truly is, from the only right and valid perspective, God's eternal plan and purpose. This section addresses the suffering of this present time and the questions that can cause people to walk away from the faith. “Why is there so much evil in the world? Why do Christians suffer? Doesn't God see all these things? Doesn't God care?" But we, who He has already called and justified, we can have hope and we can known that in the other end of all these sufferings is a glory that is not worthy to be compared. The great authenticating mark of Christians is that the spirit of God lives in them and they become vessels and dwelling places of God's holy spirit. This spirit of God is how we get born again, regenerated, a new creation in Christ... And all of this is by the spirit, first transforming us on the inside, then transforming our lifestyle and then ultimately transforming the whole person in a resurrection life without end with the Lord Jesus and the fullness of the presence of God Himself. It's a powerful, transformative work of the holy spirit within us, it's a new authority, transforming our heart/mind and ultimately our bodies in resurrection glory. Romans 8 shows the assurance and blessing of the chidren of God because of the holy spirit they have dwelling in them. The christian life day-to-day is a life that is in the spirit and led by the spirit. In this chapter, Paul is finally pulling back the curtain so that we can see that God's righteousness and holiness are fulfilled in us by the holy spirit. Through the spirit, we have a new relationship with God and a new way to be a human being. Romans chapter 7 is going to show us how we could never achieve that newness of life, presented in chapter 6, by our own willpower to do good or by means of the old covenant. On our own, we will always fail. God, through our lord Jesus Christ, has set us free from this old law of sin and death by the new law of spirit and life. God’s moral law is now fulfilled in us who walk according to the spirit. Now we can fulfill our design to live in daily relationship with God for the glory of God, fellowshipping with Him in light and sanctification. Romans 6 addresses Godly living. It addresses how our practices and lifestyle are to be transformed day to day. We are no longer to live for worldliness and self, but for God’s purposes. Romans 6 is a picture of a vibrant Christian life, that is setting aside the weights of sin and the entanglements of the world, and is living a new life of righteousness toward God. The grace of God has abounded beyond our sinfulness, and we have been forgiven and reconciled to God through Christ. Chapter 6 addresses how we deal with sin by discussing how Christ conquered over it through his death and resurrection. Romans provides a world view for Christians who stand and rejoice in the hope of glory of God. It's God's perspective of humanity. In God's eyes, all people are in 1 of 2 categories: dead in Adam or alive in Christ. What this section of Romans so beautifully reveals is that this was always God's plan, to leave man after the fall in the condemnation of Adam, so that by one reconciling perfect work He could one day place us securely in the righteousness of His son Jesus Christ. Therefore being justified, we have peace with God through our lord Jesus Christ. This whole chapter 5 is based on being justified and will show the blessedness of righteousness. Being justified we also have peace, we also have grace, we also can rejoice in the glory of God, we also can rejoice in tribulation... Being justified we will be saved from the wrath to come, being justified we exult in God to whom we've been reconciled... The Gospel was the plan all along. It has been one consistent continuing narrative through the Bible. Paul wants all Christians to grasp that this Gospel of justification by faith was proclaimed beforehand. There's only one way of salvation showed in both Old Testament and New Testament. It has never been by works, or circumcision, or the law... It is and always was by grace alone, through faith alone, by Christ alone. Closing we will see that we can have the same kind of faith of Abraham and that we can choose to believe the word of God about ourselves despite our sinful nature.
