Out The Reading Slump
Eileen by Ottessa Moshfegh Book Review

Eileen is a portal into the mind of Eileen Dunlop—a 24 y/o woman who tries to make her life bearable by swimming in anger and self-loathing. She works at a juvenile correctional facility and lives with her alcoholic father in a shambles of a house.

As she fantasizes her ‘great escape’ from her dreary town, enters Rebecca Saint John—a contrasting character whom Eileen will be drawn into, of which will ultimately leads her into being complicit in a crime.

・・✭✩ — Here’s to our very first Ottessa Moshfegh on the show! I’ve been anticipating to read and do a review of one of her works and I’m so happy that I finally get to do this!

If you’re up for a character-driven thriller, or been wanting to read a Moshfegh novel, then I highly recommend listening to this one. A gripping novel that meditates on a young woman’s damaged psyche, Eileen kept me turning pages because i’m anxious for what will unfold next. — ✭✩・・

Out The Reading Slump
Convenience Store Woman & Life Ceremony by Sayaka Murata Book Review

In this episode, we are discussing Sayaka Murata, a Japanese bestselling global phenomenon who has won all of Japan’s major literary prizes, and is known for penning Earthlings, Convenience Store Woman, and Life Ceremony.

Join me as we get to know Murata, dive deep into two of her finest works: Convenience Store Woman and Life Ceremony.

Convenience Store Woman is the story of 36-year old Keiko who has never fit in and has been working in a convenience store for 18 years. We follow her story as she navigates domestic relationships through her own unique way, while trying to deal with the pressure of society’s expectations to live a “normal” life.

Life Ceremony is a collection of short stories made of the absurdest, most creative of concepts that center on otherworldly societal settings.

If you have penchant for the bizarre and otherworldly, looking for your next best read from the Japanese lit category, or just plainly on the look-out for some good reads out there— then listen through! ♡

Out The Reading Slump
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid Book Review

Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself.

In this book, we get to visit the Hollywood scene in the 60s, as we follow the story of a woman’s journey to fame and glamour— and, of course, the seven husbands along the way. It’s a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love.

If you’re in for a fast-paced and a page-turner historical fiction that’s packed with issues and dramas, then this title might be just for you.

Hope you enjoy this episode!

Out The Reading Slump
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo Book Review

Kaz Brekker, a gang leader, was offered a chance at an impossible heist that can make him rich beyond his wildest dreams. But he can’t pull it off alone so he assembles a crew of thieves, convicts, and runaways.

Kaz’s crew is the only thing that might stand between the world and destruction—if they don’t kill each other first. Here’s a book that follows the story of a ragtag crew with an impossible odds. 🃏

An action-packed fantasy world that’s filled with magic, violence, revenge, dark past, and romantic tropes (yup, this is under YA, but it somehow, it has the power to scar kids), Six of Crows feels like home for those who grew up with Narnia, Harry Potter, Rick Riordan’s, and Cassandra Clare’s works. ♠︎

Fantasy reader or not, you might want to try this one out. Hope you enjoy this episode!

Out The Reading Slump
Normal People by Sally Rooney Book Review

Connell and Marianne grew up from the same small town in the west of Ireland, and the similarities end there. In school, Connell is popular and well-liked, while Marianne is a loner. But then come college, they switched status, Marianne adapted well (or so she thinks) with loads of famous friends, while Connell had a hard time fitting in. 💭

This is a story of two awkward friends with an electrifying connection and a complicated relationship. It’s a story of mutual fascination, friendship, and love.

Happy new year, everyone! Hope you’re all doing great. Take your vitamins and drink loads of water, and I hope you enjoy this episode! ♡

Out The Reading Slump
When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi Book Review (Non-fiction)

One day he was a doctor making a living treating the dying, and the next he was a patient struggling to live.

At the age of thirty-six, on the verge of completing a decade’s worth of training as a neurosurgeon, Dr. Paul Kalanithi was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer.

When Breath Becomes Air is a memoir that questions “What makes a virtuous and meaningful life?”. 🪶

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides Book Review

Alicia Berenson was 33 years old when she killed her husband, and then she never speaks another word. 🔪

A domestic tragedy turned into a mystery, The Silent Patient is a psycho thriller novel that’s nothing short of intriguing premise, interesting plot twist, and childhood traumas.

Listen to the full review and see for yourself if this is going to be your next read!

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie Book Review

What would you do if someone you barely even remember invites you to spend a short vacation in an isolated island? In this episode, I did a book review of one of the most famous works of the well-known English detective novelist and playwright Agatha Christie. 🍷

And Then There Were None is all about ten people who were invited on a remote island by an unknown guest. And before they knew it, they find themselves facing their own deaths.

Let’s dive a little deeper on the novel and see for yourself if you’d be interested in adding this to your TBR list. Hope you enjoy this episode!
