Every great
song can make a great conversation if you take away the melody, but not every great
song has to be a conversation.
Do you ever listen to a song and think of how you would respond to the musician? Does a song ever make you think about why the artist would write or say a particular lyric? Well, you are right. Great songs are great conversations once you take away the beats, but don't just take my word for it. Listen in to know why I believe so.

When it comes to sports, the conversation is largely based
on football, basketball, tennis, formula 1 and other physically involved
activities. Here in Kenya, track and field events have been the major sporting
events covered and appreciated by a large audience. Today we look at a
different kind of sport, E-Sports.
According to the records, the first E-Sports competition was
held in 1972 at Stanford University. I would love to go on about all that was
involved but I’ll do you one better and add a link to the article once this
episode is uploaded. After all, you’re here to hear about how the Kenyan scene
is.
Before the pandemic, gaming parlours and competitions had begun
pulling in large crowds and the parlours were even lauded as one of the more
profitable businesses for budding entrepreneurs. It was through this that the
E-Sports Federation of Kenya was formed. The competitions themselves brought to
light a new form of income for the youth and players like Queen Arrow
represented the country in more than one international competition.
In terms of returns, the gaming parlours provided a lot of young people a better way to spend their time other than being involved in vices and other unnecessary habits. They also got to earn, well not all of them, the winners only – I don’t think participation trophies count when you lose 5 – 0 in FIFA. By 2021 the financial projections claimed that the industry would be worth over 50 million Kenya shillings.
On today’s show, we speak with the Head of
E-Sports at Jiwe Sports Eugene Mweri. He is also a mental health advocate and a
broadcast journalist. We look at how the scene has evolved in the past few
years, the Tusker nexters and other E-Sport competitions as well as get to know
other projects he has been involved in.

Bakhita is a multidisciplinary artist who has built a remarkable
reputation within the alternative Kenyan music scene. As a musician she refers
to her genre as an alternative neo-jazz artist, her songs appeal to the mind
and those looking to get meaning out of life. As a painter, she uses her artwork
to express her outlook on the world and as a set designer, she uses music
videos to spread the message in her music further. In this interview, she
features Off The Cuff - a pilot
program by Radio 254, where Sophie and Wangechi have a conversation with her
with regard to her music, her artistry and her vision for the scene she is
involved in.

This has been a great year for podcasting. We have seen a
lot of improvement in the type of content that has been put out and we have also
seen the growth taken on by some of the more popular shows. From international
recognition to podcasters hosting live shows that fill out locations. A good
sign for better things to come.
Personally, I have been involved with the ADMI Digital Media
Incubator a collaborative effort of Goethe-Institut, Jenga CCI, and the GIZ to
mentor upcoming digital artists to create and distribute their work to online
audiences. Involved in it were 60 individuals involved in podcasting, music, 2D
animation, music production, and sound engineering. You already know where I
land in this, yes I can sing very angelically…
In this episode, you get to hear from Mwakaneno Gakweli and Rioba Maseke, Kenyan podcasters whom I got to work beside. Our conversation
revolves around their lives before podcasting, getting involved in the GIZ
incubator and what could be the future of podcasting in Kenya. Also, pardon the
unmitigated puns throughout the conversation.
Mwakaneno is the host of The Nairobi Podcast and Genesis
podcast. The Nairobi podcast covers stories of different Kenyans with the hope of changing
our conversations from being solely transactional. Genesis on the other hand
covers the origin stories of businesses in Kenya by using history and sound.
Rioba Maseke hosts Scenes and Coffee podcast which is mostly
about society and culture. She is a communications personality who works in public
speaking, adjudication and training.
In this podcast episode, Eugene has a conversation with Jackson Nakuwa and Mourine Apuu artists involved in the Turkana Sessions project.
Turkana Sessions is a 10-track, live recorded music project by Content House Kenya. The project offers the listener a journey through the astounding culture and landscape of Turkana. It was recorded by the breathtaking shores of Lake Turkana, the pyramid hills of Eliye and the grass fields of Kerio. The project features Jackson Nakuwa, Mourine Apuu, Jackson Ekori, Elizabeth Korikel and Eddie Grey.
Turkana Sessions is the third project from the Artists Xchange which brings together artists from Turkana and Nairobi. It follows the series The Flyest Wedding in Africa and Floating Flying. The three are part of the feature documentary - Turkana: Race for Resources set to be released in 2023.
Jackson Nakuwa is one of Turkana’s most celebrated and respected musicians. An expressive storyteller who makes music out of his unique yet, grounded perspective. Since his inception into the scene in 2006, he has released over 14 albums covering social issues within Turkana and personal matters such as his undying love for Regina.
Mourine Apuu is a proud talented creative, entrepreneur and web developer. Her music draws its influence from tradition and culture shared by the Turkana people coupled with her drive to improve their livelihoods. By using the tools, skills and opportunities availed to her community, Mourine aims at changing the perspectives of both her community and that of outsiders. Currently, she runs her website Apuu Zawadi an online gift shop, alongside being a stylist and musician.

In this episode, Robert Agengo joins Eugene on Radio 254 and they talk about Kenya's first Netflix branded series Country Queen. Also featured are Blessing Lung’aho and Vincent Mbaya (director) who also share their experience from filming the series and lessons from their lives in the Kenyan film industry.
Country Queen is a family drama series that tells the story of Akisa, a woman from a sleepy village who now leads a comfortable but complicated life in the city. Her dark past and complex relationship with the powerful and ruthless Sibala family sets a string of events with rippling consequences in motion. Directed by Vincent Mbaya, Tosh Gitonga and Brian Munene, the series also stars Melvin Alusa, Blessing Lung’aho and Nini Wacera in a thrilling tale that shows what happens when the past and present collide.
Featuring a language mix of English and Swahili, Country Queen also explores themes like rural-urban conflict, inter-family relationships, betrayal, love and commitment, as well as the intersection of tradition, leadership, culture and capitalism. A prevailing theme of the show is also the pursuit of ambition in the face of loyalty to tradition and cultural history
Robert Agengo is a seasoned award-winning veteran Kenyan actor with a stronghold in the film industry. The casting director and events host is a professional boxer, rapper and guitarist. His major TV roles include featuring in Kenya’s first series on Netflix ‘Country Queen’ that launches on 15th July 2022. Other features include Zora, Mali, Sue na Jonnie, Kona, Makutano Junction, Changes, Taking the Flak, Suga 1 and Gloves of Love.
