Jay helps me untangle the learning theoretical sense of the quadrants from the colloquial use of the word punishment ... and so much more!
One of countless take-aways in a sentence: always ask myself if I'm using "punishment" as a synonym of "diminishment" when talking about learning theory!

Caden and Melanie dig into geeky topics and (Caden's) burning questions in one of my all-time favorite episodes:
+ How can dog trainers/dog enthusiasts without a science background judge the quality of a research paper?
+ How relevant are studies done on rodents or humans to dog behavior?
+ A sidetrack into European animal welfare laws and tool bans around the world.
+ ... and a few random science-y questions I've been mulling over in my brain:
+ Can a classically conditioned response (such as "drive leaking," for example a police dog vocalizing in anticipation when hearing the siren) be made conscious and then turned into an operant response by means of consequences?
+ Are there ever situations where it is a good idea to use "flooding" with a fearful dog?
+ The difference between flooding and controlled intentional stress inoculation.
+ Why it is smart to not only include reward seeking behavior (positive reinforcement) in our dogs' education, but also teach them how to avoid discomfort (negative reinforcement.)

Caden talks about an interesting phenomenon he has observed in his students lately: the one-truth myth or the tendency to find a trainer to look up to, and try to do everything exactly the way they do it. What happens if, years later, there's another trainer with a different truth?

Caden talks about the difference between an "enriching" and a "fulfilling" life for our dogs ... and how the meaning of each term is ultimately up to us humans, since we can't ask the dogs!

Happy training, you all!
Caden and Anna talk about the seminar they met at and how it feels to have financially supported someone we don't politically agree with, but deeply respect as a dog trainer. The broader question becomes: how do we balance spending money on education (or other things), and financially supporting who we (all of us, including you, the listener!) believe most "deserves" or merits our support in terms of purchasing their goods or services. Hint: it's not an easy answer at all.

What's most important when raising puppies? In my opinion, three things:
+ environmental exposure
+ socialization/social exposure (to humans and dogs)
+ husbandry/handling/preparing for vet visits

Caden talks about using the environment itself to reinforce behaviors made difficult by the very environment. How can we teach our dogs to choose working with us over food on the ground or critters to chase?
