Biggie Smalls hated women? : Misogyny in Hip-Hop and Paths to Change - Prof. Kimya's Class

"We as a society are guilty of turning a blind eye to the ongoing sexism and exploitation of women that is blatantly displayed in Hip Hop. You see, I love Hip Hop, but does Hip Hop love me?" - A Conscious Sista'.

Misogyny is fundamentally defined as hatred and violence towards women. This "violence" is not limited to physical aggression; it extends to actions that make women feel uncomfortable, hostile behavior, harassment, and other things that cause hurt and trauma.• Misogynoir: When this hatred and violence are directed explicitly towards black women, it is referred to as Misogynoir. Biggie, The Great Frank White spit lyrics that demeaned women. Did he hate women? Does Hip-Hop hate women? Get On Code! This episode of Prof. Kimya's class focuses on misogyny within hip-hop culture, particularly examining the works of artists such as Biggie Smalls. Can hip-hop be revolutionary while simultaneously exhibiting misogynistic and homophobic elements, questioning the industry's power structures and the roles of both male and female artists? The conversation extends to how misogyny is perpetuated through lyrics and consumer expectations, touching upon historical contexts of sexualized content in media and the challenges of creating cultural change within the music industry. We need solutions for addressing misogyny in hip-hop, beyond mere boycotts, by fostering critical engagement, supporting local artists, and challenging deeply ingrained power dynamics.Yep. We're discussing Misogyny in Hip-Hop and Black Empowerment.

Addressing Black Patriarchy: The Path Forward - Prof' Kimya's Class

This episode includes DanTresOmi from the "Where My Killah Tape?" Podcast." Addressing the Black Patriarchy - Prof. Kimya's Class," centers on the concept of Black patriarchy and its impact on the Black community, particularly concerning the representation of Black men in media. The participants explore how Black women have historically been, and continue to be, instrumental in portraying multifaceted Black male characters, contrasting with limited depictions when Black men primarily controlled narratives. A significant portion of the conversation examines the historical and contemporary roles of Black men and women in leadership within the Black community, highlighting the disproportionate burden often placed on Black women to address issues and drive progress, even when Black men hold positions of power. The dialogue critiques the notion of "baby steps" for Black men in dismantling patriarchal structures, emphasizing the urgency of self-reflection and action rather than relying on Black women to guide them. Ultimately, the source underscores the importance of recognizing and challenging gender-based power imbalances within Black society to achieve broader community advancement.

Is Bro' Seko Sexist? Do Brothers ignore Sisters? Should #shannonsharpe listen to Monique? Prof. Dr. Kimya Nuru Dennis chats with the "Professor's Pet" - Bro' Seko, about the patriarchy and how brothers far too often underrate the things Sisters bring to the table. Tap-in #codekeepers !

Explore the complex issue of whether Black men listen to Black women, particularly in the context of patriarchy. The discussion begins with an anecdote about celebrity interactions to illustrate perceived disinterest in women's advice, then expands into historical and sociological perspectives. The hosts examine how societal expectations and historical comparisons between Black men and white men have shaped gender dynamics. They also scrutinize the concept of "chivalry" and its potential to inadvertently demean women, while advocating for critical thinking and individual understanding over ingrained gender roles. Ultimately, the conversation encourages Black men to challenge patriarchal norms for the betterment of the collective.Empower Consciousness: Note - The Get On Code: Our Black Empowerment channel hosts content that may not represent the views, opinions, and positions of the platform owners, participants, or partners. Netflix's FOREVER has 5 Black Empowerment Lessons that we must discuss.

FOREVER (Netflix) : 5 Black Empowerment LessonsSeko Varner, the publisher of the Hampton Roads Greenbook, discusses the Netflix series Forever, stating he loved every moment of it despite not typically enjoying love stories. He strongly recommends watching it. Seko highlights five key aspects of black empowerment that he found within the show:•Timeliness and Standards: Seko relates a saying heard at Hampton University, "early is on time, on time is late, and late is unacceptable," which is used in the film. He connects this to the standard empowered people rise to, emphasizing punctuality is important, especially "on your way up."•Imagery: He was deeply impressed by the artwork and decor in the male character's home, seeing it as an example of black excellence and a message about surrounding oneself with images of high achievement and self-expression.•Intimacy: While personally disliking scenes with actors depicted as teenagers, Seko found it significant that a character began taking intimacy "a lot more seriously" after a negative experience. He stresses that intimacy should be taken seriously for black empowerment in various relationships.•Education: Seko notes that Forever values education, not just traditional schooling but also learning trades, skills, and knowledge like music or athletics. He argues that taking education and learning seriously leads to "stronger empowerment" and "more opportunities."•Honesty: He observes that the main characters struggled with sharing deep concerns but found "freedom that came from being truthful and honest." Seko emphasizes that honesty, though difficult, is crucial for empowerment, bringing "freedom and... power."Beyond the film, Seko Varner is the publisher of the Hampton Roads Greenbook. He describes it as an online directory, website, and app created to spotlight black-owned businesses, organizations, and professionals in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, including cities like Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Newport News, Hampton, and also Yorktown, Williamsburg, and Franklin. Seko encourages viewers to share other empowerment messages they found in Forever.Empower Consciousness: Note - The Get On Code: Our Black Empowerment channel hosts content that may not represent the views, opinions, and positions of the platform owners, participants, or partners. 1st Black Woman to open an American Bank taught us 5 lessons - Prof. Kimya's Class

#richmondva #blackbank #maggielenawalker In 1903, Maggie Lena Walker was the first Black woman to charter an American bank and become its Bank President... An astounding accomplishment for a Black Woman in the early 1900s. The lesson highlights five key integrated Black ideas exemplified by Walker, emphasizing the importance of independent thought, collaborative leadership, and practical application of concepts for Black advancement.Professor Kimya outlined five key lessons derived from the work of Maggie Lena Walker that are still pertinent for Black people today. These are presented as interconnected "integrated black ideas".Firstly, Walker emphasized the critical need for Black people to develop their own concepts and theories and to actively implement them through strategies and actions to achieve tangible results. She serves as an example of someone who moved beyond abstract ideas to create real-world change.Secondly, Walker's work underscored the importance of collaborative leadership and the collective development of knowledge. This challenges individualistic approaches and highlights the power of working together and leveraging available resources for communal advancement.Thirdly, Walker demonstrated the significance of establishing economic development initiatives within the Black community. Her involvement in banking, newspapers, and retail showcased a strategy of connecting these sectors to foster economic empowerment.Fourthly, Walker's leadership within the Independent Order of St. Luke and her participation in secret societies illustrated the vital role of community organizations and networking in facilitating social and economic progress for Black people. These networks provided essential support and opportunities. Finally, Walker's later engagement with Disability Services emphasized the importance of addressing the diverse needs present within the Black community, ensuring that efforts for advancement are inclusive of all members. Economic resources for poor and working class Blacks - Prof. Kimya's Class #brokey

This episode of Professor Kimya's class focuses on reducing Black poverty by emphasizing individual and family financial planning. The lecture advocates for realistic financial plans, legitimate financial advice from authorized planners, and consideration of a financial plan's impact on future generations. **It stresses the importance of understanding and utilizing tax-funded services instead of viewing them as government handouts. Professor Kimya encourages informed voting, contributing to Black safety nets, and building financial literacy from a young age. The class highlights the need for Black people to develop their own cultural concepts and economic power, drawing inspiration from figures like Harold Cruz. It encourages integrating different approaches to achieve collective advancement and self-reliance while responsibly utilizing available resources.Harold Crusehttps://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1hu97GJJgMWbdfZw6fb33wW57BhReENYIWilliam Julius Wilsonhttps://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Dra3RpL4laiCco5O6g90cL3Arr0NHknI Here are some of the key highlights from the video:* **Financial Planning and Advice**: * It's important to have a realistic financial plan that includes achievable goals. * Financial advice should be legitimate and from authorized sources, such as a financial planner. Be wary of scams, especially those targeting the Black community. * Consider how financial decisions impact the family, both positively and negatively, and plan ahead for emergencies. * Financial literacy and planning should be taught across generations.* **Seeking Professional Guidance**: * The video recommends seeking a financial advisor as soon as one has an income, even if it's not substantial. * A financial advisor can provide personalized advice and create a financial plan tailored to individual circumstances.* **Utilizing Available Resources**: * Take advantage of free financial planning classes and programs offered by public libraries, community colleges, and Black organizations. * **Utilize tax-funded services and resources**, remembering that these are not "government handouts" but services paid for through taxes.* **Understanding Wealth Building**: * Wealth building doesn't necessarily mean becoming a millionaire; it means saving more than you spend and building up savings and investments over time. * Be aware of cash flow planning, retirement income, Social Security benefits, disability insurance, living wills, and life insurance.* **Collective and Societal Level Strategies**: * Support Black organizations and institutions, but be aware that many receive government funding, which may influence their activities. * Be an informed voter, looking beyond popularity and jargon, and consider voting across party lines. * Contribute to Black community safety nets and preventive measures, focusing on building money, health resources, and school resources together while avoiding paranoia.* **Drawing on Black Intellectualism and History**: * The video references Harold Cruz's cooperative plan, which drew from W.E.B. Du Bois's cooperative economic plan.Interested in sponsoring the channel? Coach Diamond Drip, discusses her journey to becoming a coach and entrepreneur. She started her career in leadership development, managing a gym before losing her job in 2019. Facing financial uncertainty, she transitioned to entrepreneurship, initially starting a product-based business. Over time, she launched a second business in graphic design, where she found herself offering life and business coaching for free, realizing that her passion lay in helping others.

Diamond Drip highlights the idea of "fear pivoting," where people move towards safer, more attainable goals rather than pursuing their true passions due to limiting beliefs. Her coaching focuses on helping clients pivot towards what genuinely excites them, rather than being driven by fear. She emphasizes self-worth, explaining how transitioning from a product-based to a service-based business made her confront doubts about her value, which she overcame through personal growth.

The speaker was diagnosed with bipolar 2 at 14, and their experience with debilitating depression led them on a journey to find a remedy. They tried various medications and self-medicated with cannabis to treat insomnia, but these approaches only addressed symptoms, not the root cause. In 2022, they found a clinical trial using psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) to treat depression. The trial involved one “hero dose” of over five grams, which the speaker described as life-changing, accomplishing what traditional medications could not.

They explained that psilocybin works similarly to SSRIs, but more effectively, as seen in its chemical structure. Through the trial, they gained insights about self-compassion and self-forgiveness, and learned about the importance of intention and integration during such experiences. This psilocybin experience helped heal their depression and changed their outlook on life.

They coined the term "fear pivot," which refers to when someone avoids pursuing their true passion out of fear or limiting beliefs. Instead of fear pivoting, they now help clients move toward what truly excites them. They emphasize that starting with what you love is more rewarding than making fear-based decisions.

In the second half of the transcript, they discuss their journey with psilocybin further, crediting their best friend for introducing them to magic mushrooms. Initially, they experimented with natural remedies and recreational psilocybin but lacked the proper structure. The clinical trial, which was a 15-week process, provided them with a more structured, intentional experience, leading to the healing of their depression. The trial also revealed insights about the passive suicidal thoughts they hadn’t fully realized they were experiencing.

Finally, the speaker affirms that their depression has healed and encourages others to seek alternative paths for healing, especially those struggling with mental health challenges such as bipolar disorder, PTSD, or anxiety. They invite listeners to connect with them for coaching services.
