Welcome to Odd Trilogies, a podcast dedicated to the strange inter-connectedness of film! To us, an "odd trilogy" is any set of three films—whether bonded by story, spirit, themes, and/or shared cast & crew—that we think has an interesting angle worth digging into! One of the classic examples of a "lesser known" trilogy is that the film Oldboy is actually the second part in Park Chan-wook's "Vengeance Trilogy!" But is it a sequel? What are the other two about? How does each one deal with the concept of vengeance? THAT'S something worth exploring! Our "trilogies" are not limited to the deliberate or canonical, like Bill & Ted or Pixar's Cars; we also curate and discuss more incidental ones—trios with unofficial or less tangible connections, like our "Odd Nutcracker" or "Rise of Snyder" trilogies! Those trilogies may be based on a commonality that we find interesting or which is significant to film culture. Whatever the connection is, we (your hosts, Logan Sowash & Andy Carr) apply our love and knowledge of film to analyze these trilogies as whole bodies, as well as the individual films themselves. Listen and laugh with us as we dive into the never-ending pit of cinematic connectivity known as ODD TRILOGIES!

Freakquel #13: The Conjuring: Last Rites
In 2021, Logan and Andy believed that the third Conjuring film, The Devil Made Me Do It, was the final chapter. In 2025, they are proven wrong with The Conjuring: Last Rites. That's right, folks! It's time for a FREAKQUEL! The boys team up with the Warrens yet again for what might be their scariest case in their final feature film. How does the fourth film hold up against the franchise? Episode 109: Yasujirō Ozu's Noriko Trilogy
Familial duty, societal expectations, and the changing of the seasons. Logan & Andy dial back the clock to post-WWII Japan to talk about Yasujirō Ozu's NORIKO TRILOGY - a triptych about domestic life, each one centered around a different woman named Noriko, always played by the effervescent Setsuko Hara. Sit and take in the tranquility of the Japanese countryside as we discuss 1949's Late Spring, 1951's Early Summer, and 1953's Tokyo Story. With the trilogy sharing similar casts, settings, and subject matter, how does each one distinguish itself thematically? How does the trifecta of Ozu, Hara, and actor Chishū Ryū shift between each film? And just how many films did Ozu name after seasons?! Episode 108: The Qatsi Trilogy
Humanity, technology, and the dangers that society finds itself facing when both evolve side-by-side. Could a trilogy meaningfully explore all this with no characters or dialogue? Indeed THE QATSI TRILOGY sets out to do just that! Logan and Andy prepare for a collaborative trilogy that reshapes how they look at the medium of filmmaking. Led by director Godfrey Reggio and composer Philip Glass, the boys lock in as they discuss 1982's Koyaanisqatsi, 1988's Powaqqatsi, and 2002's Naqoyqatsi. How do Reggio's thoughts on humanity's relationship with technology change over two decades? How does each film tackle the conversation through image and music alone? How does Philip Glass' score shape the experience? Review: The Naked Gun (2025) (with Nick Rogers)
Over thirty years later, the Naked Gun films are back, this time starring Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson! Director Akiva Shaffer (The Lonely Island, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping) brings Police Squad into the modern era with this sequel-reboot about Sgt. Frank Drebin's son. Ahead of the episode covering the original Naked Gun trilogy, Logan & Andy team up with Police Squad trainee and friend of the pod Nick Rogers (Midwest Film Journal) to discuss the latest film in the screwball comedy franchise. Does it do the originals justice? Is Neeson an authentic Drebin? Any good beavers in this one? Surely some questions will be answered in this review of 2025's The Naked Gun!

Episode 106: Not-So-Fantastic First Steps
Over the course of three decades, The Fantastic Four were adapted to screen in three entirely different iterations, all of which failed at some level or another to launch Marvel's First Family into comparable cultural relevance like their peers Spider-Man or the X-Men. To Logan and Andy, that sounds like a series of NOT-SO-FANTASTIC FIRST STEPS! In time with the fourth attempt to get the characters right, Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the boys venture into space to learn the secrets of the family's three previous swings. This trilogy includes the Roger Corman-produced (and never officially released) 1994 film The Fantastic Four, Tim Story's Fantastic Four from 2005, and Josh Trank's infamous 2015 adaptation, Fantastic Four (a.k.a. "Fant4stic"). Why was the Corman film never released? Didn't the 2005 film get a sequel? And how could any adaptation possibly ruin Thing's iconic catchphrase?
