Marriage is a covenant, not a contract. For the Christian, it's a sacred, three-way bond with God at the center. Before pursuing a relationship, it’s essential to ask yourself: Am I truly ready for marriage, God’s way?

Here is the first of 5 self-reflective principles, rooted in Scripture, that can help you evaluate your readiness and align your path with God’s design.

1. Is Jesus Christ the Lord and Saviour of My Life?“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” — John 14:6 (KJV)Jesus must be Lord of your life before He can be Lord of your marriage.

Marriage is a spiritual covenant. You, your spouse, and Christ must be equally yoked: “And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.” — Ecclesiastes 4:12 (KJV) This is not optional. The Holy Spirit empowers the sweetness (love, joy, peace, patience), but also sustains you through trials designed to refine and sanctify. “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers…” — 2 Corinthians 6:14 (KJV)

Ask yourself:Do I follow Christ daily, or just occasionally? Do I want someone who truly follows Jesus—or just calls themselves Christian? Can I commit to keeping God as the third strand in my future marriage? If not, stop. Your foundation isn't strong enough yet.
