Next Level Physicians: Thriving Outside the Box
Episode 69: Sustaining Unconditional Love in Physician Relationships w/Dr. Yara Demo

SHOW NOTES:

In this week’s podcast, we invited Dr. Yara Demo to a conversation about marriage and relationships. We talk about what makes relationships healthy and unhealthy, and how challenging romantic relationships can be for a physician.

-- Highlights from the conversation:

DR YARA DEMO

● Practicing Neurologist, Physician Life Coach, Mother and Wife.

● Burnout, living intentionally, relationships coach

● Thriving and empowered after burnout

MARRIAGE AND RELATIONSHIPS

● It’s very easy for us to take the people that are close to us, and our relationships, for granted. Friends, family, romantic relationships.

● For a couple, is necesssary that both try to see things from the other’s perspective. This is necessary to start building tolerance, consideration, and respect. Mutual respect is imperative.

● Watching out language is something we should work on. Not only verbally, but also physically. The unconscious mind can make us react on a way that we are not aware of, and still hurt our partner with words or gestures.

● It’s important to accept that we all have different ways of thinking and working towards mutual goals. Without recognizing this, we have the risk of thinking that the other person isn’t making enough of an effort. This also leads to taking misunderstandings or “signals” as evidence of what we think in a stubborn way.

● When both partners are physicians, it’s a bit more probable for them to mutually understand the time commitment, the struggle, and the stress involved in doing the job. Shared experiences allow couples to rely on each other after being on call for 24 hours or after losing a patient, because they both know how that feels. One down-side of a physician couple is that usually, it’s one of them who takes the lead role in the home administration and/or child care. This can be a lot for someone who has a busy schedule, and may cause some friction with the partner who isn’t participating as much. Balance is key.

● In a non-physician male and physician female household, there can be a reversal of the roles (the socially expected ones) that can create a lot of struggle However, this depends on the couple’s mindset.

● A couple is always in development. There are several phases to go through. And the more time passes, the more challenges will be phased. We should keep present that it’s ok to change, but also to be open to the other person changing. An open mind and comprehension can go a long way.

Next Level Physicians: Thriving Outside the Box
Episode 68: Surviving the Pandemic as an Entrepreneur w/Dr. Dike Drummond

SHOW NOTES:

This week Dr. Drummond and I discuss what it's like to be an entrepreneur in the middle of the pandemic we are going through, and how to think of your business and yourself during these difficult times.

Highlights from the conversation:

DR DIKE DRUMMOND

● Mayo trained family doctor, professional coach, author, speaker, and trainer.

● CEO and Founder of TheHappyMD.com

● Over 3000 hours of one-on-one physician coaching, training over 40,000 doctors

● Dr. Drummond started blogging about physician’s burnout. Being one of the pioneers in the topic, he was able to work together with hospitals and other organizations to help address burnout in the medical field, especially on live events.. With COVID-19, 80% of his business disappeared.

BEING AN ENTREPRENEUR IN COVID-19 TIMES

● Adapting is crucial. Switching to a virtual platform and reinventing channels of communication allowed Dr. Drummond to stay afloat.

● Some of us don’t just tolerate a job. We don’t want just a job, but more. Some of us want to break free from regular practice and pursue something with purpose, and create with it a revenue.

● After the COVID-19 outbreak, a lot of physicians decided to switch to a virtual business, telemedicine, and teleconsulting. Looking for a niche can be overwhelming, but you must focus on something that you are truly and deeply passionate about. You can do “wound” working, investigating and working on your own “wounds” (or problems), and share that solution with an audience.

● The reason to go for what you really care about or what “hurts” you, is that you have an insight view that’s very much needed when you want to capture an audience (and potential clients). People will invest in content they can relate to.

● A tip: Find what works on the people you are targeting, research, and try to see if it works. If it does, hold on to it. Do try improving content and ideas, but don’t steer too far away from what’s working. People can get tired of new wording and concepts (or even don;t understand them), and they will always go back to the basics, to what’s familiar to them.

● Trial and error will be necessary. Success in the first try is extremely rare, so don’t be disappointed or scared to fail and try again. If a project didn’t go as planned, it’s because of a marketing failure, a financial failure, and administrative failure, etc… Not because you are a failure. Take the learning experience and keep going.

● You can use the situation brought to us by COVID-19 as an opportunity to go for that business idea you’ve been thinking about. However, take your steps carefully and keep present that you may still have responsibilities to take care of.

Next Level Physicians: Thriving Outside the Box
Episode 67: Empowering Latina Docs w/Dr. Ursula Lang

SHOW NOTES:

This week next level entrepreneur and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about empowering our Latina Women Physicians

Highlights from the conversation:

Dr. Ursula Lang

● MD, PhD. Board Certified in both Anatomic Pathology and Dermatopathology

● Dedicated to helping Latina physicians and scientists through Latina Docs Podcast (with Dr. Vanessa Calderon)

● Immersed in coaching for the last four years, with over 1,000 hours of training and experience

● Loving wife, mother of two beautiful children, and fierce friend

The importance of representation and empowerment

● Nobody else has the same combination of experiences, positions, connections. This uniqueness can be turned into a contribution and example for those that have similarities in one or more aspects with us, but can’t find them in mainstream media.

● Representation can give us perspective. Different parties voicing what they need and how they live their lives provides strength and value to the group they represent.

● It’s important to have people in your life you can go to or look up to, that can remind you who you are why you are doing what you're doing.

● Representation is part of a bigger machine. There are people in the front lines (that show up in manifestations, attacking the root of the problem, being extremely vocal), and behind them are those who empower them, and lift them up when they are burning down.

● Creativity is one of the roots of empowerment. Without it, so many tools (such as podcasts, coaching programs, videos, guides, etc) wouldn’t be available. These tools expand our minds and provide us with an impulse to look for better solutions.

● Someone decided that one color of one skin or one race was superior to others, and this kept going for so many years. It keeps going. Latino people and black people can have internalized that without realizing. This can be stopped by honoring our cultures, which can only be noticed and displayed through empowerment and representation. Without clearly visualizing it, there’s no way to combat the idea of white supremacy.

● This also works in other aspects, such as gender discrimination.

Next Level Physicians: Thriving Outside the Box
Episode 66: Finding Real Estate Freedom through Syndication w/Dr. Cherry Chen

SHOW NOTES:

This week next level entrepreneur and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about

Highlights from the conversation:

Dr. Cherry Chen

● Founder of The Real State Physician

● Received her MD at Texas A&M College of Medicine with honors, and completed her training at Oregon Health & Science University.

● Author of “The Physician’s Definitive Guide to Real Estate Syndications”

Real Estate Syndication

● Syndication deals are usually for apartment complexes and storage buildings, because they will be shared with multiple families/parts.

● Syndication may take a bit longer than a solo investment, but it may be well worth it.

● Full-time physicians can have a hard time managing their investments due to lack of time, especially on real estate. When you talk about syndication, you can invest and have a stake in a property without having to go through the complicated process of managing it and maintaining it closely.

● Not only there's less investment in time, but also in the monetary aspect. There’s a bit less at stake.

● Basic money management is key. It’s important to stay informed and self-educate in this matter for any type of investment, and daily life in general.

● There’s a difference between crowdfunding platforms (sites that facilitate real estate connections and transactions, but don’t take place in the actual investment), and private syndication (in which you have a sponsor and there’s a team of people investing money, highly participating in the whole syndication process).

● Some things to have in consideration before jumping to the pool: Be 100% sure that you are investing your money in something you actually want to put your money in, check the situation of the market, check the background and experience of the people you’ll invest with.

● Rest assured, investing in properties - and real estate syndication - is not as difficult as it seems. You just need the correct guidance.

Next Level Physicians: Thriving Outside the Box
Episode 65: Bringing the Soul back into Medicine Part 2: Restoring Our Souls w/Dr. Pam Pappas

SHOW NOTES:

In a second episode, next level physician Dr. Pam Pappas and I took the conversation to another level once again as we went deeper about bringing the soul back into medicine and just how we begin to restore our souls as physicians & medical providers.

Highlights from the conversation:

Dr. Pamela Pappas

● Integrative psychiatrist. Personal and executive coach for physicians.

● Founder and CEO of Wholehearted Doctoring

● One fellowship in mental health services research, and another one in consultation liaison psychiatry. Bringing together mind and spirit.

● As a psychiatrist, and in her years as a coach, she has heard the following words coming from medical professionals too many times: “I feel like I've lost my soul.”

Doctors: What to do with the current ongoing trauma?

● We are in the middle of a disaster that’s not like any other disaster we’ve faced before. Usually, after a couple of days or weeks we are able to check the damages and rebuild. This is not the case. And if the perpetuity of this situation isn’t enough, there’s another factor that weighs into medical experts: They are constantly doubted. People say that what doctors do and say is a hoax, that numbers are inflated, that these are all lies. These are heavy things to carry on for a long time. An ongoing trauma.

● It’s important for doctors to strengthen their inner connection to not be washed away by ignorant and hurtful comments from people and the media. We are talking about relying on the spiritual side. (This is not necessarily about religion)

● It can be hard to help someone establish a relationship with their own emotions, especially if they are not used to it. Some even get to the point of dissociation (because with such an amount of stress, the mind needs some sort of escape).

How to reconnect to one’s soul?

● This is very individualized. Several factors are important. What’s your current way of life and what’s your ideal life? What gives you peace? What keeps you grounded? What brings you joy? What does it look, feel, smell, taste like?

● You probably already have what you need to head towards a connection with your spiritual side.

● Then, it’s all about willing to let yourself go of external factors that won’t nourish your internal values. Give yourself permission to slow down

● Give yourself permission to feel, to feel good.

Episode 64: Bringing The Soul Back Into Medicine w/Dr. Pam Pappas

SHOW NOTES:

This week next level physician Dr. Pam Pappas and I took the conversation to another level as we went deep and talked about bringing the soul back into medicine.

Bringing the soul back in medicine

● As medical professionals, it can feel like we are not encouraged to take care of ourselves. Intellectual capacity, training, research, etc… if they are not fueledes by something deeper than just the intellectual, it can cause something inside us to break. It can feel like we are giving up on us, on our souls.

● To fully heal, it’s necessary a methodology and a pathway for understanding and living your authentic self. Personality patterns, soft spots, inner conflicts and frictions come into the mix and they shouldn’t be taken lightly or ignored.

● Moral injury is coming up more and more. Professionals are put in situations in which they can’t assist a patient the way they know in their soul and the way they have been trained.

● Few resources and staffing are recent problems that came up with the pandemic. These factors create a sensation of burnout and being left out by the system and their employers.

Next Level Physicians: Thriving Outside the Box
Episode 59: Money Mindset & Building Wealth w/Dr. Latifat Akintade
SHOW NOTES: This week next level entrepreneur Dr. Latifat Akintade and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about how shifting money mindset is one of the most important aspects of building wealth. Highlights from the conversation: Dr. Latifat Akintade ● Mom of three kids, GI Doctor, and Founder of Money Fit MD (https://www.moneyfitmd.com/) ● After experiencing burnout in medicine, she got interested in finances and balancing her mind. After some research and offering budgeting help to friends, she turned her understanding in money and mindset into a career. Student Loans ● People see student loans as something that they can’t live with and hate, a huge burden. But what if you change your mindset to pay off student loans without being miserable? Think of it as a business investment. If someone walks up to you and says: “I will invest $200,000 in you, and I guarantee you that after 4 years, you will get $200,000 per year”, it doesn’t sound like a curse anymore. ● You don't have to wait to pay off your student loans in order to dream and invest. Get rid of the thought of “I can’t be abundant until...”. Getting Rid of Money Preconceptions ● There are some common ideas that are unconsciously picked up while we are young. We heard that money is bad, rich people are bad, money is the root of evil. Truth is, wanting money is not bad. But being obsessed with money or letting it change your mindset is bad. However, if you are well grounded in your core values and integrity, abundance won’t be a problem. Parents, you have the opportunity to rewrite your kid’s money story. Stop Comparisons from Social Media ● Social media creates unrealistic expectations of yourself. Looking at people in their luxury cars, private jets, and yachts can make you forget that they are normal people, and most likely that’s not their real life. Once they put down the phone, they're just as messed up as the rest of us. From time to time, stop the scrolling and keep up the work you’re doing. Watch your Expenses ● If you’re going to splurge and buy something super nice, go for it! But first, make sure it won’t negatively impact your space (your financial space). If it’s a car, will you be able to keep up with the maintenance costs? If it’s a trip, is it worth the destination and expensive hotel, or are there more economic options with almost the same experience? ● Money is a tool, a tool that will help you to enjoy this world and enhance your life in meaningful ways. Use it wisely. Catch up with Dr. Latifat by visiting her on her Website www.moneyfitmd.com You can also follow her on social media at: Facebook Page www.facebook.com/moneyfitmd Instagram @Moneyfitmd. Next Level Physicians: Thriving Outside the Box
Episode 62: Empowering Physicians to Chart Their Own Path w/Dr. Sunny Smith

SHOW NOTES:

This week next level entrepreneur and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about

Highlights from the conversation:

Dr. Sunny Smith

● Family doctor

● Owner of Empowering Women Physicians (empoweringwomenphysicians.com)

● Podcast and self help junkie!

● After a bike accident in Tahiti and losing funding for the free clinic she was running, she was forced to slow down and think about her current life. She started listening to a bunch of podcasts and that is where she discovered the LCS.  Signing up to do her coach training led her to begin the community Empowering Women Physicians (which initially just started as a community) and soon she began being in demand as a coach.

● In a lot of ways, that bike accident set her on her path of purpose, and this is how it is in life many times. We are given hints and when we don't listen, we are given sometimes big and undeniable circumstances to make us slow down and see the  opportunity for change.

Heading to New Directions

● We sometimes are bound by this thinking that we cannot have a career that goes our way... that we cannot do things like work part time schedules, shift careers, be entrepreneurs BECAUSE it's the way we were taught to think in  med school and in a lot of ways it's still frowned on in our community.

● Doctors have a lot of authority and expertise, due to the dedication and hard work invested in our line of career. Same focus can be applied to other areas of our life, such as personal relationships, passions, solo ventures, etc. The only things stopping us are limiting beliefs (I don’t have time, I’m not good enough, not yet, etc.)

● It only takes one little adjustment and boom! You may be heading to a different direction, learning new skills. It can be scary because it feels like you are leaving accomplishments, studies, and a career path behind. But it’s quite the opposite. It’s about learning more.

● A lot of people feel like they have to do everything the cookie cutter way, with everything predetermined. What about charting your own path? Open up to the idea of a journey. Life has led you to where you are, so why turn back? You are supposed to go forwards.

● Even if you go back to the career path you originally were at, you will come back with new skills and experiences that will help you be better at what you resonate with the most. But you will be fine. Don’t sacrifice yourself forever. In order to know what you really want, you should go through multiple experiences. It’s the only way to avoid feeling trapped and stuck.

● Keep present that anything you do, matters. Use your voice, use your actions, contribute to the world in the ways you feel most helpful and comfortable with.

Episode 61: Being a Physician Mom of a Child w/Complex Needs. A Deep Conversation with Dr. Stella Evans

SHOW NOTES:

This week next level physician Dr. Stella Evans and I went deep today as we talked about being a mom of a special healthcare needs children.

Highlights from the conversation:

Dr. Stella Evans

● NLP practitioner

● Mother of an extra health care needs patient.

● Pediatrician (complex care pediatrics) in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

● Creator of a life coaching program for physician mothers of special needs children: Clarity Courage Compassion.

● NLP practitioner

Life Coaching for Parents of Kids with Special Healthcare Needs

● With all the pressures that come with life as a physician (especially during a pandemic), life in the family, and the added pressure of special healthcare, It’s important to give oneself the space to be human.

● Allow yourself to feel lost, sad, overwhelmed. Otherwise, suppressing those emotions will lead to secondary ones - like shame and anger - that won’t let you function well.

● In order to recognize the light, you need to know your inner darkness and dominate those feelings and move to action.

● When you disconnect yourself from your inner self, you are also disconnecting from your child. Kids are incredibly intuitive. Honoring our own emotions means honoring our children.

● The capacity for living your best life comes from the capacity of appreciating the person your child is, even when situations turn out to be hard. Inner balance is necessary to not let outside circumstances throw you out of your game.

● Try to evaluate if things that you add to your life are really worth it. Preserve what may be a delicate balance by itself. Can you fit more stuff without losing it?

Next Level Physicians: Thriving Outside the Box
Episode 60: Protecting Your Income & Minimizing Your Tax Burden as a High Tax Bracket Entrepreneur w/Mark Seither

SHOW NOTES:

This week next level entrepreneur Mark Seither and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about how to protect your income and minimize tax burden as an entrepreneur.

Highlights from the conversation:

Mark Seither: Owner of Kingsview Partners. Host of Health Preservation Podcast.

How to make money?

● One thing we look at like especially on the real estate side is stop, look around, and ask about what’s going on. Timing is key, and planning is key. Knowing what to do and how to do it can be the difference between making little or big money.

● Create multiple streams of income.

How to save money?

● Take time to educate yourself financially. When you understand what's important to you, then you know the questions to ask.

● If you have pre tax money, and not in a high tax bracket, paying as much taxes as possible while in a low tax bracket and translate into a huge amount of money saved.

● Preserve wealth as you build it, especially in passive investment.

● Check the movement of your money. Map where it should go, when, and in which vehicle.

Don’t trust money strategists who:

● Stay things like “ I'm going to beat the market investment-wise, and that's why you should choose me.”

● Doesn’t educate you and just tells you that everything is going to be ok.

● Isn’t proactive and actively wants to have meetings with you. Look for someone who gives you a heads up when you have issues coming.

Next Level Physicians: Thriving Outside the Box
Episode 58: Taking the Mystery Out of Sales w/Karen Graves

SHOW NOTES:

This week next level entrepreneur and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about

Highlights from the conversation:

Karen Graves

● Founder of karengravescoaching.com

● Started as a pharmaceutical sales rep, and after successful first years and promotions, she ended up in the sales training department as a manager. After the recession, she pursued a coaching certification and began her career as a coach.

Get into the proper mindset and sell your product/service

● Make peace with the fact that you are selling. Yes, you are going to present a product. yes, you are going to ask for someone's money. But there’s nothing wrong with that, because you are helping them.

● Sales is actually about helping someone make a decision. The person you are talking to has a problem that needs solving, and you may have a solution in the product or service you are selling. You are serving someone when you sell, and you are doing a disservice when you don’t.

● As a doctor, you also sell. No matter your specialty, you ultimately sell medicine, you sell lifestyle changes, you sell a change of environment... And you don't feel guilty for them because you know it’s good for the patient. Take that same approach to sales.

● Be clear of the value of what you are selling. Take in consideration the product or service itself of course, but also the long-term value they provide. For example: A burnout coach helping you organize your life. Of course, someone pays to stop getting burnout. But what about the long-term value? Reconnecting with their children, saving their marriage, loving their career again. Immediate value and long-term value: Help your prospective buyers connect the dots between the two.

● Be human, connect with your buyers, let them relate to you. Nobody will listen to a robot.

Getting people to say yes

● Change your pricing. You can set it up and then lower it. (discount!)

● Watch you speech. Are you communicating properly? Are your clients actually understanding you? Study the best way to make this happen.

Next Level Physicians: Thriving Outside the Box
Episode 57: Becoming a Thought Leader w/Dr. Carmen Landrau

SHOW NOTES:

This week next level Doc Carmen Landrau and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about being a thought leader.

Highlights from the conversation:

Dr. Landrau

● Cardiologist from Houston, Texas. Born in Puerto Rico

● Opened her solo cardiology practice 10 years ago

● Keynote speaker on women's empowerment and leadership. Speaker coach

Current situation of speakers

● Speakers were used to traveling, but now due to COVID a lot of new opportunities have opened up online. Virtual events, online coaching… A lot happens when recording and behind the scenes. We are still learning as we go.

MC skills

● An MC makes or breaks an event. The MC is the one on the spotlight, the one who sets the tone and pace of the event, and works hand in hand with the event planner. If there are sales in the event, the MC can negotiate getting a percentage.

What is considered a thought leader?

● Not necessarily a big following, but someone who has a voice. Someone who expresses opinions that a number of people identify or leads people to think in a different way. A lot of thought leaders don’t realize they are thought leaders.

● A thought leader starts by opening people’s eyes. First, in a one-on-one conversation, then when two people are present, then a group, and then an audience. It’s a process. Thought leaders don’t grow up thinking that they want to be thought leaders, but they do want to change the world by making an impact.

● Thought leaders are not in the spotlight necessarily because they like the attention, but because they carry the huge responsibility of transmitting an important message.

Thing to consider if you want to be a thought leader:

● What’s your purpose? Have it clear.

● Always keep in mind that your words have an impact, and you can influence a lot of people.

● Be responsible with your message and your mission.

● Stop for a minute and think of the best way you can transmit your message, so one gets confused.

● Believe that you are heard and that you are able to make a change.

● There's not one straight path. Know your weaknesses and work on them, and potentiate your abilities.

● You can always change your direction and advocate for something else.

● You don’t necessarily have to be in front of a big audience. You can have a blog, podcast, website, do videos, etc.

● Do what you are comfortable with, but don’t be afraid to step a bit of your comfort zone from time to time.

Next Level Physicians: Thriving Outside the Box
Episode 56: Being Guided by Your "Already Genius" as a Physician Entrepreneur w/Dr. Nilong Vyas

SHOW NOTES:

This week next level entrepreneur Dr. Nilong Vyas and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about how she turned her passion for helping parents navigate sleep problems with their children into a thriving business.

Highlights from the conversation:

Dr. Nilong Vyas

● Owner of Sleepless in NOLA. General pediatrician.

● With a family to take care of, trying to achieve work-life balance proved difficult, so she started considering other options but maintaining patient interaction.

● She got interested specifically about sleep when her kids started having problems. Reaching out to specialists, friends, and even online, she realized there was a lot of confusion and contradictory information. After scientific research mixed with her pediatric formation and tests, she found some success in her methods. Sharing her experience with multiple patients influenced her decision to dedicate her career mainly to sleep.

From Physician to Entrepreneur

● Dr. Clairborne speaks on overcoming impostor syndrome: Every time she releases a new product or program, she acknowledges the impact and difference she makes with all she shares. She knows she is good at something, and little by little the fear of not being enough disappears.

● In order to achieve work-life balance it is important to establish both deadlines and limits. Fix a date and make sure you work in order to make it work. But beware! As entrepreneurs, we have the inner drive to always do more and achieve more. That’s now always good. It’s also great to know when it is enough, and not like “settling”, but to be OK of where you are in the process.

● Go step by step. First make sure you are stable and with everything determined, only after that you are ready to bring on a team member that can take on the things that you can do, but don’t have time to do anymore. After this, you will be able to produce more and more, and add more people to your team. This is called scaling.

Sleep

● With kids, it’s important to establish a pattern. Naps and sleep during night should be part of a routine. If parents give up, this can disrupt the child’s sleep cycle.

● A significant amount of sleep issues come from parents being the child's crutch. Anything that they do before the baby goes to sleep (rocking, bouncing, singing, etc.) can turn into dependency. It’s important to slowly work a way away from teaching the child to fall asleep only after a specific action.

● It’s important to establish times and have everyone informed and on board. Both parents, grandparents, kids, nannies, visits...

Next Level Physicians: Thriving Outside the Box
Episode 55: Moving Forward in Medicine During these Treacherous Times w/Dr. Tom Davis

SHOW NOTES:

This week next level entrepreneur and physician Tom Davis and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about how to keep moving forward as physicians during these treacherous times.

Highlights from the conversation:

Dr. Tom Davis

● Co-Founder of Clinicians Career Cooperative: A place to network and share experiences with other physicians in any stage of their career.

● Mentor and Creator of telemedicine practices

The Healthcare System and the Impact of COVID-19: Moving Forward

● Setbacks like being laid off, separated , or getting less hours are not accidents. They are all side effects from the toxic system in which medicine takes place. Management doesn’t care about doctors, only about ways of making money and reducing costs.

● The system is set up in a way that doctors don’t have time to think, participate, or use their creativity from anything else but their clinical tasks. Doctors are put into a sort of hamster wheel without time or space to breath or think on their own. The worst part is that no one is going to come and help out. That’s why doctors should push through and search their ways as consultants, coaches, and pursuing their practices - or at the very least, be part of a network of support.

● Unprecedented times can give unprecedented opportunities. COVID-19 has created an earthquake that knocked out the foundations of the healthcare system and how hospitals work, revealing to doctors that it may not be worth it after all.

● It’s now time to look for opportunities:

- As primary care physicians, we are deadwood. That’s actually good because most won’t jump off the faulty system unless they are forced to.

- Another opportunity is the use of technology to leverage expertise. We're looking at artificial intelligence, data sharing, rapid interconnection.

- The third opportunity comes with the old argument against universal healthcare: cost. That’s clearly out of the window. Health insurers and startups are looking for new models to pay, and that will eventually translate into legislation.

● Exercise your expertise in different ways: Mentoring, coaching, a podcast, private practice, blog, books, videos, courses. There’s a whole new generation of doctors hungry for knowledge. The educational system is now diverse and no longer belong to just big entities.

● These are times to network as well. Jump into blogs and connect with like-minded experts, share your experiences, teach others.

Next Level Physicians: Thriving Outside the Box
Episode 54: Multiple Streams of Income through Passive Real Estate Investing w/Peter Kim

SHOW NOTES:

This week next level physician entrepreneur Peter Kim and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about multiple streams of income through passive investing in real estate.

Highlights from the conversation:

Dr. Peter Kim

● Founder of Passive Income MD

● Board-certified anesthesiologist

● Host of Leverage and Growth (Virtual Summit for Physicians)

● Thinks it’s important that parents encourage an entrepreneurial mindset to children. It will serve them later on in life! when they have to provide for themselves.

● After spending years in a company and waiting for a certain number of shifts and a higher status, he got the opposite. He felt it as they were taking advantage of him and felt powerless. He decided he was going to take control of his time. After all, time is money!

Multiple Streams of Income

● Previous physician mindset: Make it through med school practice for 30 years, and then retire.

● Current mindset: What’s the next thing I should accomplish? ALways seeking for a higher calling.

● It’s very important to have multiple sources of income because - as these times have proved - nothing is guaranteed and we never know when things will shut down.

● What stops most physicians is the “lack of training”. They feel like they need to get an MBA in order to be prepared. Truth is that what determines success is being able to focus and channel energy into getting things done. That’s what business is about.

● The first step to start another source of income isn’t to start reading books. The first step is to imagine the kind of life you want to have once you obtain your goals. Then, the beginning and middle part of the journey will become more clear. You don’t start walking towards a destination without knowing exactly where to go!

● Physicians have been told that asking for help is a sign of weakness. In order to progress in the entrepreneurial world, it is important to understand this is not true at all. Stop limiting beliefs. Reaching out to others, modeling successful people, and finding a community of like minded individuals are ways to accelerate the journey.

● Real estate is a good source of income. It can be active (full search of properties, management, and sales) or passive (investing in real estate and syndication funds).

Next Level Physicians: Thriving Outside the Box
Episode 53: Reclaiming Our Autonomy & Freedom as Physicians Through Blockchain w/Dr. Leah Houston

SHOW NOTES:

This week next level entrepreneur Dr. Leah Houston and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about taking our power and autonomy back through Blockchain, and how she is leading this movement.

Highlights from the conversation:

Dr. Leah Houston

- Emergency medicine doctor / founder & CEO of HPEC (Humanitarian Physicians Empowerment Community)

Decentralization of physician’s credentials / blockchain

- Over the past 20 or 30 years, physician-patient interaction has been completely altered. We were instructed on how to document and share the digital information about our patients. All of that information is now analyzed in order to find ways to deny payment to doctors, and at the same time deny services to patients.

- As physicians, it's our duty to protect that information and to have control of that information, for the sake of the relationship with our patients.

Blockchain

- When we talk about any digital communication, whether it be through a cell phone, on a Facebook group, via email, etc… they are centralized (all of the data is in, controlled by, and belongs to a specific platform). Blockchain is a way to record information and provide secure direct communications without going through a centralized identity.

- Blockchain is great for physicians, as it creates an opportunity to document what happens with patients and transfer that information directly into a patient’s digital record, keep a copy to ourselves, and not share it with anyone else. It can also help us keep a secure communication between colleagues. (HPEC covers this)

Decentralization of physician’s credentials

- It’s important to start by obtaining our digital identities and asserting that we are who we say we are in the digital space. We have a license, DEA numbers, Medicaid, Medicare.... all of them are part of our digital credentials. They can be verified by any institution, and blockchain allows us to keep them in one place, available. (HPEC covers this)

- There are movements, such as campaigns in GoFundMe, to make certifications a lifetime. Institutions shouldn’t be able to profit from physician’s knowledge and time. (HPEC supports this)

Next Level Physicians: Thriving Outside the Box
Episode 52: Being an Entrepreneur Means Ongoing Personal Development w/Dr. Brent Lacey

SHOW NOTES:

This week next level entrepreneur Dr. Brent Lacey and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about how we learn by teaching, and how ongoing personal development helps us to be examples for modeling excellence to others.

Highlights from the conversation:

Dr.Brent Lacey

● Owner of The Scope of Practice, Gastroenterologist. Does one-on-one coaching in business and personal finance

● After working on one-on-one coaching several years and getting the same questions asked over and over, he decided to provide resources for people in the shape of a blog. He made sure that the topics he included were needed by his audience, as well as being viable.

We deepen our learning when we teach others

● Latin phrase: “Docendo discimus” that means by teaching, we learn.

● Teaching people is the best way to learn. There’s something in being able to transmit certain knowledge to others, that reaffirms the fact that you deeply understand it too.

● Teaching lets people discover the way they process information, their way of thinking about certain topics, as well as their own philosophies.

Becoming successful is just a matter of making the right decision

● You don’t have to have 300 diplomas in different specialities to become a millionaire. Extremely intelligent people became millionaires, as well as common people that worked as a teacher, plumber, landscaper, etc. The only thing needed is the will to learn about what your next step will be.

● Becoming a millionaire is a matter of making the right decisions, and keep making them for a period of time. It’s all about making smart choices.

● Money mindset: Some people were taught since an early age, some people weren’t. Those who weren’t should be focused on implementing that mindset in their minds. Being able to be responsible and mindful of their finances.

● It’s important to adjust gratification. This doesn’t mean that not spending on things beyond what’s necessary shouldn’t be done, but the contrary. It should be done considering the lifestyle you can afford. This is important because some people hold their breaths during university years, residence, and so on…. and once they get their first paycheck, BOOM! Lots of expenses and luxury. Those things are ok, but should be incorporated gradually and while making sure they are in the budget.

● Social media and the exposition of everyone else’s dream life can provoke negative thoughts such as “When is it going to be my turn?” First, think: Is it something you genuinely want, or you just say you want it because it looks good? Are there other things that you find more valuable and would rather spend money in? Find those priorities and focus on them.

Next Level Physicians: Thriving Outside the Box
Episode 51: GRIT...Doing the Dirty Not-So-Sexy Work of Entrepreneurship w/David Simmons

SHOW NOTES:

This week next level entrepreneur David Simmons and I took the conversation to another level as we chatted about the dirty work of entrepreneurship.

Highlights from the conversation:

David Simmons

● Business consulting with entrepreneurs.

● Started in advertising as a research analyst, then switched to sales analyst, to manufacturing, to business analyst. After moving with a competitor as a global brand manager, accumulating 15 years of experience.

The dirty work of entrepreneurship: The things that entrepreneurs want to avoid in the process of starting a business.

● Costs to sell: Entrepreneurs and , surprisingly even companies, avoid spending before being able to sell.

● Research: Sometimes because of fear or the product not being good enough or because of lack of time. It could also be because of receiving too much feedback, provoking analysis paralysis. Analysis paralysis can stop entrepreneurs from launching a great product because they are questioning every decision and element from the product.

● Behavior flexibility: It’s easier to follow your own ways and strategies, but they probably won’t work in every venture you take in life. It’s necessary to be able to adapt to the results of a market research, a new brand, or a product flop.

● Testing: Tweaking products is an extra step that few people actually enjoy, but it’s the final wall before a successful product release.

The importance of research

● It has always been important, but COVID-19 made it even more essential. It’s necessary to figure out the state of the industry and the product. Is it viable nowadays, or not anymore? Are people buying?

● Checking out what competitors and doing and how they are doing it. Price point analysis, marketing strategies, checking if they are leaving space for other competitors to enter the market, etc. After completing research, there will be a clear picture of how competitors overlap between each other, and what blank spaces they are leaving for someone else to fill. “The point of differentiation”.

● Research helps find what your own product is missing. A lot of entrepreneurs are scared of this because they don’t want to be wrong, but it’s necessary to present the best version of the product and correctly satisfy the needs of your clients.

● Understanding clients, their pain points, and needs. You will never succeed unless you can 100% get what your clients value and what they don’t. Without research is like being blindfolded.

● Doing research BEFORE crafting the product will save you a lot of time. No need to re-do, only to apply the knowledge.

See you on the next one!
