Where do you want to wander? In a bid to make more friends and to take advantage of our ability to take socially distanced walks over the last year, I decided it was time to meet my neighbours. Starting with someone I knew - George next door – a chain of strangers grew, one recommending the next. I was interested in people’s backgrounds and their connections to Islington in the first instance but like all good conversations they went in a hundred different directions. Here are edited recordings of those conversations.

Episode 9 - Graham The Producer

Recorded on 19th June, 2020. Graham lives near enough that I can just about call him a neighbour.  The salient reason for his inclusion in this series is that he is also a podcast producer, and he's offered me some very useful advice about recording and editing this series.  He's also offered me some good advice about how to make it more interesting, but I haven't made use of that yet.  It's possible that I played rugby against Graham in 1993 when we were at rival schools.

Episode 8 - Teresa The Gallerist

Recorded on 1st June, 2020. Teresa is a gallerist and film-maker.  I was introduced to her by Jon from down the road, but truth be told I actually already knew her since I'd bought some beautiful artworks from her a few years ago.  It was great to be re-connected.

Episode 7 - Tu The Documentarian

Recorded on 21st May, 2020. Tu lives next door to me on the other side (from George).  He's a New Zealander whose serious approach to both sandwich and perfume-making leads to some incredible results.  He's also an impressive philosopher.  This marks the start of a new branch on the neighbourhood tree.

Episode 6 - Myriam The Banker

Recorded on 19th May, 2020. George The Potter introduced me to Kate The Artist who introduced me to Charlie The Photographer who introduced me to Claire The Journalist who introduced me to Tom The Film-maker who introduced me to Myriam The Banker.  At the time of recording Myriam also lived on my road.  She has subsequently moved back to France to look after her elderly parents.  I particularly enjoyed her spirited defence of bankers.  Spending a lot of time in the entertainment world I tend to hear the same opinions a lot, so it's refreshing to hear an alternative view.

Episode 1 - George The Potter

Recorded on 13th April, 2020.  At the time of recording George lived next door.  He's since moved to Somerset and we miss him a lot.  When I conceived of this project I knew that starting with George would work because he's such an affable person and as a result has many friends in the neighbourhood.  And so it proved - he introduced me to Kate The Artist, and the first link in the chain was minted.  George makes beautiful ceramics, has a cheeky dog and is a wonderful cook.
