Draft #33 - PIETER BART KORTHUIS - How do screenwriters work in the Netherlands?

Spring has come! To kick things off, Poland's first screenwriting podcast, Natural Born Writers, is back in English!

Our guest (or rather, as we call them, co-writer) for draft #33 is PIETER BART KORTHUIS, a well-known Dutch screenwriter with over 20 years of experience, former chairman of the Screenwriters' Guild of the Netherlands (Netwerk Scenarioschrijvers/Auteursbond).

Pieter is the creator of such series as: “PENOZA” (the original of the Polish “BLOOD FROM BLOOD”), “THE YEAR OF FORTUYN” and “DIRTY LINES”, and films: “CAKE MAN”, “THE STRONGEST MAN IN HOLLAND” and others.

TIMECODE AND OUR DISCUSSION TOPICS:

00:00:00-00:03:36 - Introducing the Podcast

00:03:36 - 00:14:20 - Screenwriters complaining about bad practices – the situation in Poland and the Netherlands.

00:14:20 - 00:20:09 - How did Dutch writers achieve better treatment from producers? And about the victory of Polish filmmakers in their fight for royalties from the internet.

00:20:09 - 00:30:15 - How did Dutch screenwriters start producing themselves and establish their own literary agency?

00:30:15 - 00:36:14 - Is the director the author of the film or TV series? Does film school prepare directors to work with screenwriters?

00:36:14 - 00:44:52 - Don't ask what the Guild can do for you, but what you can do for the Guild. So, how are things in the Dutch Screenwriters’ Guild?

00:44:52 - 00:58:54 - How many people belong to the guild, what are they currently working on, and why is it so important to unionize?

00:58:54 - 01:11:13 - How to become a TV series “creator”? What can Dutch screenwriters afford in contracts? About the lack of recognition for the 'Penoza' creators in countries that produced remakes.

01:11:13 - 01:19:52 - Origin Story of Pieter - how did he become a screenwriter? Why didn't he go fully into directing? And a little bit about the 'Dirty Lines' series on Netflix.

01:19:52 - 01:24:48 - About the fascinating collaboration on writing 'Penoza'. And about lazy writing in crime fiction.

01:24:48 - 01:36:28 - What is Pieter's approach to screenwriting craft? How does he do research and create his characters? Remember the structure, but also remember that there are no rules.

01:36:28 - 01:46:16 - How to deal with writer's block? What are Pieter's upcoming professional plans? What films and series does Pieter want to recommend to our listeners?
