Nafs and Therapy

This podcast is where therapy meets faith and tradition. Too often, we search for therapists who share our beliefs, hoping for a space that truly understands us. As a Muslim and practicing therapist, I felt the need to explore this intersection—to have real conversations about where faith and psychology align, how we can grow, and how healing can be both spiritual and psychological. Most importantly, mental health doesn’t discriminate—believer or not, we all face struggles. Join me in reflecting, questioning, and making space for a something that is dear to our heart, mind, and soul.

EP 5/P2: The Faith-Fitrah Dissonance, a conversation with Wid Kattan

Part 2: As we continue this conversation, we delve into the healing of the spiritual wounds experienced by women, particularly in the context of Islamic teachings. We further explore the concept of fitrah faith dissonance and its impact on women's psychological well-being. The discussion emphasizes the importance of healing through both cognitive and emotional pathways, while also addressing the challenges posed by difficult religious texts. We advocate for the creation of supportive communities and the empowerment of women to navigate their spiritual journeys with agency and discernment.

Hadith:

I said: Messenger of Allah, how should we approach our wives and how should we leave them? He replied: Approach your tilth when or how you will, give her (your wife) food when you take food, clothe when you clothe yourself, do not revile her face, and do not beat her.

Abu Dawud said: The version of Shu'bah has: That you give her food when you have food yourself, and that you clothe her when you clothe yourself.
