Writer on big TV show talks the role of humour in Morrissey's work

Matt Koff, an American TV writer and stand-up comedian, joins Chris and George to talk about the role of humour in Morrissey's work.

He writes for The Daily Show, a big show in the US that has some similarities with Have I Got News For You in the UK. But he's also a big Smiths and Morrissey fan.

Is there something inherently funny about Morrissey's high-drama perspective on the world? And in what ways do Trump and Moz share similarities?

As usual, Nanny Val reacts to a track, there's the trivia quiz, we dig into the lyrics of a song and we bring you some "if you love Morrissey then you'll love this" recommendations.

Join us on Patreon for bonus monthly episodes, full-length interviews (Matt's runs to 40 minutes), access to the members-only WhatsApp chat and more. You'll also get access to full-length archive interviews with people such as Stephen Street and Alain Whyte.

This podcast was produced by Gary at Red Eye.

This episode was briefly removed from podcast services due to a potential copyright issue. It was originally published on October 31, 2025, and re-uploaded on November 5, 2025.

Is Morrissey being un-cancelled? It seems that way
In this month's episode we ask if it's time to un-cancel Morrissey - and whether he was ever cancelled at all. The zeitgeist certainly seems to be moving in that direction and we discuss whether Moz's third act might just be the most triumphant of all.As always, George's grandma Nanny Val is back, and this time she reacts to 'Sunny'. George questions Chris in the ten-question trivia quiz and we share some things that "if you love Morrissey then you'll love this".Contact us at morrisseyandwine@gmail.com.Join us on Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/MorrisseyandWineThank you so much to Gary at www.redeye.co.uk for turning this podcast into something decent. I worked with Morrissey. It was a whirlpool of trauma
This time we interview Mark Nevin, who wrote the vast majority of Morrissey's 1990s album Kill Uncle. He gives a fascinating insight into that time in Moz's career and the strange process of writing music with someone so elusive and aloof. Nanny Val is back and this time she reacts to You Have Killed Me. The trivia quiz returns, with a twist, and George doesn't do so well. And of course we have some "if you love Morrissey then you'll love this" recommendations.Join us on Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/MorrisseyandWineWe're having some technical difficulties with the www.morrisseymerch.com website so if you would like to order one of the T-shirts just email us at morrisseyandwine@gmail.com or send us a DM on our social media accounts. The wines we enjoyed were as follows:Chosen by Majestic Sauvignon Blanc 2023, Marlborough - https://www.majestic.co.uk/wines/chosen-by-majestic-sauvignon-b-37585Chosen by Majestic Primitivo 2022/24, Puglia - https://www.majestic.co.uk/wines/chosen-by-maj-primitivo-73877Thank you so much to Gary at www.redeye.co.uk for turning this podcast into something decent. 'The moment I knew Morrissey had fired me'
Chris and George are joined by Andrew Paresi, Morrissey’s drummer in the very early solo years, across Viva Hate, Bona Drag and Kill Uncle, when the singer’s identity as a standalone artist was first cemented. "Morrissey was my friend. A 'nice' guy? No. He was more than that"
