More Than Medical Students
EN Episode 45: Doing a PhD as a Med Student

Welcome to another episode of the more than medical students podcast! We are delighted to discuss a very interesting topic today which is: doing a PhD as a medical student. This is a unique and amazing route for students who are aiming to do research and academia, and not a very common occurrence at med school so we are delighted to be able to bring this route forward and hopefully inspire others who may be interested.

Our guest today is Dr Anezka Macey-Dare, who is a newly qualified doctor who took some time out during medical school to complete an Intercalated PhD. She graduated with a Bsc and MBBS from Imperial College London and PhD from Cambridge University. In this episode we discuss her journey in Research and Academia. She discusses how she decided to apply for an intercalated PhD and why this was a good time for her in her Educational career. She also shares tips for a successful PhD application for any listeners who are interested in applying! We discuss how she organised and conducted her PhD and what it’s like to step from medical student to researcher. It was really fascinating to get to dive into her experience working in such a fascinating project and hear from her personal experience as a PhD student in one of the World’s most prestigious and competitive universities.
