There’s a silent epidemic that has been happening for decades on our federal lands. Everyone loves recreating in national recreation areas, national forests, and national parks. But there’s an unseen danger about these places: you could become a missing person and there would be little done to bring you back into the known.

On September 24, 2013, two friends set out to hike in Idaho’s Craters of the Moon National Monument but never returned. The remote volcanic landscape is known for its rugged terrain, lava fields, and extreme weather conditions. Their tragic disappearance underscores both the unforgiving nature of the monument and the dangers of venturing into isolated wilderness without adequate preparation.

Tonight, on this Halloween-leaning episode, we’re going on a journey across America — coast to coast, forest to canyon, swamp to cliff — to explore 13 trails where something other than wind might be watching. These are hikes with history. With tragedy. With ghosts. With stories that linger in the trees.
So grab your headlamp, pull up the hood, step off the beaten path—and let’s go where the wild gets uneasy.

In October 2020, a woman set out for a solo hike in Idaho’s rugged Sawtooth National Forest—and never came back. Her car was found parked neatly at the Prairie Creek Trailhead, her backpack missing, and no sign of a struggle. Searchers have been routinely looking for her for the past four years and not a clue has been found as to what happened to her.
Tips: Blaine County Sheriff's Office 208-788-5555

Silver Plume, Colorado—a sleepy, semi-ghost town nestled in the Rockies, once a mining hub, now a place people visit to disappear...or vanish. In the summer of 1988, a seasoned sportswriter took a sabbatical and moved here with dreams of writing a novel and rediscovering himself. He rented a little antique shop in the same building where the previous owner had mysteriously disappeared a year earlier. While on a hike, he vanished too, just like the previous owner. This is one of Colorado’s most bizarre missing person’s cases.

On a quiet November evening in 2011, a man was walking home from work along a bike path. Just a mile from home, a woman on a bike discovered him lying unconscious. But this wasn’t an accident. He had been brutally attacked with a heavy blade—almost decapitated. No defensive wounds. No motive. And no suspect in sight.

Olympic National Park is one of the wildest, wettest places in the United States. Towering trees, moss-draped trails, and a rainforest that breathes with mist and silence. It’s beautiful—and isolating. And in June 2006 a former military intelligence officer went missing without a trace. A man who knew how to take care of himself. So how did Olympic swallow him whole?

There’s a certain romantic pull to the idea of going off-grid. Leaving behind the noise, the stress, the modern world—to find peace in the wild. But for one family, that dream ended in heartbreak. In 2023, the remains of three family members were found deep in a forest in Colorado. What started as an attempt to live off the land became a fatal survival effort against the elements.

There’s something about Maine’s wilderness. It’s beautiful—towering pines, remote lakes, fog-covered trails that twist for miles. But it’s also… quiet. Too quiet sometimes. Because out here, people disappear. And not just a few. Some stories hint at simple tragedy. Others? They feel like something else entirely.
