Ep. 156-Helen Gibbs and Susan Haire, Deaths on the Parkway

Thirty-seven years ago, two women and longtime friends fell to their deaths from a popular overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Authorities quickly grew suspicious of James Gibbs, the husband of one of the victims. When they took a closer look at the Gibbs marriage, they saw signs of turmoil and a motive for murder. It would take two trials for a jury to make a final decision on what they believe happened to Helen Gibbs and Susan Haire.

In October 2016, 22-year-old Cati Blauvelt was separated from her husband, John Blauvelt, a recruiter for the U.S. Army. When she went missing and was discovered murdered a few days later, her family knew who was responsible. But before he could be charged, John Blauvelt disappeared with his new girlfriend, a 17-year-old high school student, and it would be six years before he had to answer for his crimes.

In 1937, 16-year-old Elva Brannock vanished into the winter fog of the Blue Ridge Mountains, only to be found murdered four days later. When North Carolina resident Stacy Hawks learned about this unsolved murder in her community, she used her research to explore the possibilities of what happened to the young woman in her historical fiction novel, "Dividing Ridge." Host Renee Roberson interviews Stacy Hawks to learn more about this mystery and the process of researching and writing the book.

Ep. 153-The Murder of Janet Siclari in Nags Head and the Unsolved Murder of Denise Johnson in Kill Devil Hills

In August 1993, 35-year-old Janet Siclari was murdered on the last night of her vacation on the Outer Banks, within walking distance to her hotel room. Based on physical evidence left on her body and at the scene, investigators were able to pinpoint the killer four years later with the help of CODIS. The 1997 murder of 33-year-old Kill Devil Hills resident Denise Johnson remains unsolved.

He was only 27, but Peter Lucas Moses, Jr. exerted power and control over a small group of women, requiring them to call him "Lord," fathering multiple children with them, and subscribing to the ideology of Black Hebrews. In the summer of 1967, 19-year-old Brenda Holland took a job as a makeup supervisor with The Lost Colony outdoor drama in Manteo, N.C. Excited to continue training for a potential career in the theatre, she embraced the opportunity with joy and enthusiasm. But after only a month on the island, Brenda disappeared after a date with a Lost Colony cast member. Her deceased body turned up five days later in the Albemarle Sound, and despite an extensive investigation, the murder remained unsolved until a journalist dug into the case and provided his personal theory of what happened. This week we'll discuss Brenda Holland's life and background along with the details of her disappearance and cause of death, and next week's episode will cover the list of suspects and who was likely the young woman's killer.

There was a reason these thieves seemed to know the inner workings of banks and crime scene investigation. We'll also discuss the tragic explosion of a fallout shelter that killed five children in Valdese, N.C. in the summer of 1972.

In October of 1997, a guard named David Ghantt at Loomis Fargo, Inc. in Charlotte decided to see if he could get away with robbing the company of $17 million dollars. Unfortunately, he involved several other people in his plan, and while he absconded to Mexico with a small amount of cash, this unusual cast of characters began spending the remaining millions so quickly they attracted the attention of almost everyone they knew in the Charlotte area. The heist inspired the 2016 movie "Masterminds," starring Zack Galifianakis, Owen Wilson, and Kristen Wiig.
