The movement was led by fans who felt that the addition of ATK (which stands for "Atletico de Kolkata") to the club's name was disrespectful to the legacy of Mohun Bagan, which is one of the oldest and most storied football clubs in India. Supporters of the Remove ATK movement argued that the name change undermined the history and identity of Mohun Bagan, and that the club should be allowed to retain its original name.
