In this elemental deep dive, we explore the presence of water across the Practical Magic universe—from the 1998 film to Alice Hoffman’s novels. Water in these stories isn’t just atmosphere—it’s memory, magic, grief, and return. It appears in every threshold moment: when love begins, when loss takes hold, when curses are born, and when healing finally comes.
We follow its current through rain-soaked roads and storm-drenched gardens, through birth on the sand and offerings cast into the sea. From the windswept cliffs of Maria’s Island to the quiet harbors where new lives begin, water reveals itself as the most honest element—mirroring longing, cleansing what’s buried, and always, always remembering.

In this enchanting episode, we take a deep dive into the delicate yet powerful world of Gypsophila, more commonly known as Baby’s Breath. Often dismissed as a mere “filler flower,” we uncover its potent symbolism in magic, folklore, and its subtle but meaningful appearance in the film Practical Magic — particularly during the Solstice scene with Aunt Jet and Aunt Frances.
From the language of flowers to the lingering breath of ancestors, we explore how this seemingly fragile bloom represents innocence, protection, and eternal love — and why the Owens women may have chosen it so deliberately.
We'll explore the different variations (there are many!), and also wander into the shadowy realm of sleep demons from various cultural traditions, known for stealing breath in the night. To keep little ones safe from such spirits, we share a gentle children’s bedtime protection spell featuring Baby’s Breath and moonlit incantations.
And somewhere between jazz and spellcraft, we uncover a curious pop culture thread intertwining a modern band with a legendary guitarist mentioned in The Rules of Magic, that might just have you believing in fate.
Join us, as we reflect on the paradox of Baby’s Breath — so small and fragile, yet timeless — allowing us to honor the element of air and the unseen magic carried on the wind!

Every Midsummer’s Eve, a sparrow flies into the Owens house and circles three times before being ushered back out—an omen, a tradition, and a mystery woven through all four books in the Practical Magic series.
In this enchanting episode, we unravel the deeper meaning of the sparrow: as a messenger of liminal spaces, a symbol of the Threefold Law, and a harbinger of magical thresholds. We explore how this unassuming bird flits through myth, literature, and folklore—embodying everything from divine justice to poetic rebellion.
We also dive into:
The Wiccan Threefold Law and its connection to karmic return
The literary "rule of three" and its mythic echoes
Dream symbolism and the spiritual power of small things
Cultural and mythological sparrow lore across the globe
Why the "in-between times"—like Midsummer—are so ripe with magic
Join us as we chase the sparrow through story, spell, and symbolism… and discover what messages it might be bringing you this Midsummer.

Strike a match and circle the salt—this episode is ablaze with the power of Fire in Practical Magic. From Gillian’s wildfire spirit to Sally’s quiet, smoldering strength, we explore how the element of fire burns through the Owens family legacy—both literally and metaphorically.
We trace the flames of transformation across Alice Hoffman’s novels and the 1998 film: from love spells gone too far, to the danger that rises with Jimmy Angelov’s resurrection, to the flickering candles and hearth fires that ground the Owens women in warmth, magic, and memory. This isn’t just about spark and smoke. This is fire as lineage, as ritual, as protection—and as a dangerous force when untended.
We also dive into fire scrying, candle magic, cleansing flames, phoenix mythology, hearth goddesses like Hestia, and the symbolic fire that fuels the heart. Whether it warms or devours, fire in Practical Magic reminds us that passion and power must be held with care—or risk burning everything down.

You can stream it on all major platforms or grab your copy on Bandcamp!
In today’s very special episode, we—The Stinas—are celebrating not only the album’s release but the incredible three-year journey that brought us here. We’re diving into the archives—text messages, fan fictions, studio memories, and behind-the-scenes magic—that tell the story of how two internet strangers became kindred creative spirits (and gave Lennon & McCartney a run for their money 😉).
💫 We'll be spilling the lavender tea on everything:
— How we chose the name of the album— The meaning behind the album art— How & why we chose these 5 songs for Volume 1
And yes—today’s the day we premiere the full EP for the very first time!
Of course, we couldn’t let this milestone pass without a few heartfelt thank-yous. We’re sending all our love and deepest gratitude to our Crowdfunding Campaign supporters, the dream team at Plaid Dog Studios, and you, our beloved listeners.
This one’s a little bittersweet… but mostly, it’s full of magick!

They dissect their original work verse by verse, draft by draft, and take you on the creative journey of how they wrote the song from start to finish. In this episode, we explore the elusive practice of astral projection—where the soul is said to slip the bonds of the body and travel freely through the unseen realms.
We’ll delve into the intriguing fan theory that Gillian’s overnight trip to reunite with Sally, starting from the moment she gazes into the bathroom mirror while adding belladonna to the tequila bottle, might not be a physical journey at all, but an astral one. Could her sudden leap from Jimmy's bathroom to the car’s midnight road trip be an out-of-body journey fueled by magic?
Join us as we unpack the folklore of mirrors and doorways, the film’s moonlit magic, and the deeper currents of longing and connection that swirl through Practical Magic’s spellbinding scenes. ✨🧙♀️

In this second installment of our Elemental Series, we take a deep breath and step into the realm of Air—the element of thought, communication, clarity, and spirit. We explore how Air weaves through magical traditions, breath-based rituals, tarot, astrology, and myth. But we also follow its delicate thread through the world of Practical Magic, where wind, whispers, and winged intention carry meaning beyond words.
From Sally’s Amas Veritas spell and the swirling petals released into the night, to Gillian’s CPR attempt, the clatter of wind chimes during breakfast with Gary, and the iconic final rooftop leap—Air isn’t just present in Practical Magic, it’s pivotal. It’s the laughter around the margarita table, the smoke of cigarettes and incense, the quiet wind that signals change.
This episode unpacks how Air shapes not only spellwork and symbols, but also grief, belief, and becoming. With reflection prompts, rituals, and a touch of sister-sign banter, we invite you to breathe deep, listen well, and let go.
The wind is rising. Let’s begin.

It's getting hot in this cauldron, and not just because of the tequila.

🪄 Ourselves (yes, we re-listened to Episode One so you don’t have to)
🧂 Our favorite hater (you’re part of the story now)
🧙♀️ The entire Owens family (Jet, Franny, Sally, Gillian—you’re ALL on the chopping block)
🪳 The Deathwatch Beetle (hasn't worked a day in its life)
🍸 And yes, even the tequila bottle.

"Always throw spilled salt over your left shoulder."
This week, we explore the sacred shimmer of salt, one of magical tradition's most powerful and misunderstood elements. From ancient folklore to modern spellwork, salt has been a protector, a purifier, and a powerful conduit between worlds. But what makes it so potent, and how does Practical Magic tap into its symbolism?
We explore salt’s rich legacy across cultures, from circle-casting and spirit-banishing to kitchen witchery and everyday rituals. We also turn our focus to Practical Magic, where salt isn’t just a pantry staple—it’s a shield against darkness.
We also tackle some misconceptions about salt in modern witchcraft, share personal stories from our own practices, and offer simple ways to work with salt in your home even if you’ve never cast a circle in your life.
So grab your broom, your margarita glass (salted rim optional), and join us for an episode that’s equal parts sacred, salty, and spellbinding.

Happy Mental Health Awareness Month! 🧠💗
This week, we’re lighting the black candles and calling in backup—because we’re diving deep into the psychology of Practical Magic. Joining us are our special guests Brittney Brownfield M.S., L.C.P.C. and Hannah Espinoza M.S., L.C.P.C. of Popcorn Psychology—licensed therapists and fellow Practical Magic obsessives—for a powerful conversation about grief, trauma, healing, and the messy, magical road between.
Together, we’ll unpack how the Owens women embody different trauma responses, what Jimmy Angelov’s behavior tells us about cycles of abuse and narcissism, and how rituals—whether magical or mundane—can be tools for reclaiming agency after trauma. We also talk about the symbolic power of sisterhood, inherited narratives, and how magical thinking can sometimes serve as a survival mechanism.
Whether you're here for the mental health insight, the witchy vibes, or just to hear therapists geek out over midnight margaritas—this episode is for you!

We’re kicking off our Elemental mini-series by digging into Earth—just in time for Earth Day! 🌎✨
In Practical Magic, Earth is more than just a background; it's a living force. From the rosemary by Sally's garden gate to the salt in the Aunts' Midnight Margaritas, the Earth not only holds the roots of family legacy... it holds memory, magic, and survival. 🌱🕯️
We’ll explore the grounding power of herbs, gardens, salt, chocolate, and why, for the Owens women, Earth is a witness, a healer, and a quiet kind of spell work.
Light a green candle, slip off your shoes, and join us—because every story worth telling starts with the Earth beneath your feet. 🌻

We’re diving deep into the dark waters of Leech Lake—not the one in Minnesota (though we’ll explore that later), but the mysterious and enchanted lake from the Practical Magic book series. In Alice Hoffman’s story, this version of Leech Lake resides in Massachusetts. It’s said to be home to a serpent-like water creature that Faith Owens befriends—a being cloaked in shadow and folklore.
The Owens women often swim in its waters, though they’re never able to dive beneath the surface, only float. It’s also aplace marked by tragedy, with more than one drowning said to have occurred there.
But our journey doesn’t end with Leech Lake. We’ll be castingour net wider to explore legendary sea serpents and monsters from across cultures and mythologies—from the elusive Loch Ness Monster to the ancient and fearsome Leviathan... And also with Leviathan, comes yet another unexpected Practical Magic Soundtrack connection!

In this delightfully unhinged episode, The Stinas slither into the underbrush of Appalachian folk magic to unearth the secrets of Rattlesnake Weed—a plant that walks the crooked line between healing and harm. With their usual irreverent wit and a healthy dose of side-eye for organized religion, The Stinas tackle everything from Granny Witch remedies and mountain ghost stories to the bizarre Pentecostal snake-handling traditions.
But that’s not all—they’re also diving broom-first into the magical universe of Practical Magic, where Rattlesnake Weed becomes a deadly euphoric drug in the hands of the wrong man (looking at you, Jimmy Angelov). Is it fiction? Is it folklore? Or just East Coast kids messing with desert plants they didn’t grow up fearing?
Expect comedic tangents, theological shade, and a touch of Southern gothic glam as The Stinas trace the real and imagined uses of this powerful plant—from backwoods altars to best-selling books.
Because if there's one thing we know: one seed might lift you up… but two just might send you to the afterlife!

Ready for part 2?! Let’s dive back into Practical Magic through the lens of the Major Arcana, aka The Fool/Hero's Journey. Last week, we analyzed The Fool through Justice cards of the Major Arcana. This week we're starting with The Hanged Man and rounding it out with card 21 -The World.

Sally Owens’ Verbena Botanicals shop is a whole vibe—but why did she name it after this seemingly unassuming little plant? And did you know verbena is also called vervain? We didn't!
In Practical Magic, verbena is more than just an herb—it’s a symbol of healing, love, and protection. While it plays a major role in Alice Hoffman’s book series, it’s only subtly included in the film—hidden in the name of Sally’s shop. But could there be a deeper meaning?
Join us as we explore verbena’s magical and medicinal uses, its presence in the Practical Magic universe, and the ancient lore linking it to a goddess who wept tears of vervain for her lost love. From history to herbalism, we’re unraveling the mystery of this enchanting plant!

"Is that a snake tattoo!" It sure is! His name is Greg and he’s on Kristina's wrist! (Gillian would approve)
In celebration of the Year of the Snake, the Stinas slither down all the twists & turns of snake symbolism in the Practical Magic film as well as the book series. They analyze Gillian’s character arc as well as her fashion choices, and how they coincide with the snake-like persona she takes on since meeting Jimmy.
They also find answers to more burning questions - What do snakes have to do with twin flames and vampires?! And what is actually swimming in Leech Lake?! Is it a snake? Is it an eel? Are a Garter Snake & Garden snake the same thing?!
We also unravel the mythology of the ancient Ouroboros symbol throughout time and culture and show you how snake energy can be used in spell work.
