Sustainability and digitalization are topics that are currently having a major effect on the logistics sector. And ports, which act as the hubs for global trade, are no exception here. Port operators are also having to face up to the crucial issue of how technical innovations, digital solutions and sustainable strategies can help them serve customers’ future needs in an efficient and sustainable manner. Uwe Oppitz, the Managing Director of Rhenus Ports, talks about how the requirements for port operators are being transformed at the current time, what effect changing flows of goods are having on the work being performed at ports and what role sustainability is playing for the port of the future. The special feature here is these impressions come directly from where all the action is taking place: Logistics People Talk has visited the Niedersachsenbrücke facility in Wilhelmshaven, one of the largest handling terminals for coal in Germany, which is facing reorganization during the next few years because the days of coal as a source of energy are now limited.
