Born in Murray, UT as one of five kids, Dr. Nicholas K. Howland was raised in the LDS church. After receiving his Doctorate of Medicine at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, he now practices in Draper, UT as a board-certified plastic surgeon.
He specializes in plastic and reconstructive surgery and aesthetic services, developing personalized surgical and nonsurgical treatment plans to help patients achieve their aesthetic and medical goals. He is one of the few (if not, only) plastic surgeon(s) in the SLC area to treat patients who identify as transgender.
A proficient Russian speaker, Dr. Howland's global perspective was broadened by a two-year church mission in St. Petersburg, Russia, prior to his collegiate studies. Outside the operating room, he cherishes time with his two children, whether it's at the lake or in the mountains. NOTE: This episode contains discussion and themes of suicide and suicide prevention.
Within weeks I will publish my first book, TransparentSEE: How I learned to SEE through my journey as a parent of a transgender kiddo . I share a few excerpts with you today as a means of connection and sharing of my story of moving through all of the discomfort that comes with being raw, open and vulnerable.
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention states, “There’s no single cause for suicide. Suicide most often occurs when stressors and health issues converge to create an experience of hopelessness and despair.”
Efforts that counter loneliness and isolation all point to human connection. I believe connection is a vital component of suicide prevention, long before a person exhibits warning signs. I am in no way suggesting this as a quick fix or a replacement for adequate mental health care and being proactive about getting it.
Showing up vulnerably is the only way to “true connection.” Shooting the breeze about what you had for lunch, how was work/school, or did you see the latest movie aren’t going to cut it. Heartfelt, raw and authentic sharing followed by open ended, thoughtful questions is a pathway to true connection. Note that the pathway I am describing is indefinite, different for everyone and subject to your intuition of what is best for you in your situation.
As you listen to an excerpt of my story, may your heart be touched and opened to the idea of sharing yours with your loved ones.

Whether it's physical pain or emotional pain, healing from our wounds is not a one and done thing. The same is also true for pain from mental and spiritual wounds.
We can do all the work that we think is needed and arrive at a place of feeling healed and even function better for a while. Then something happens -- an event, circumstance, a person, or a situation -- can activate it and we begin to feel that same old familiar pain yet again.
It's normal and natural to want to resist it. Perhaps we think it's behind us and we've grown beyond or past it.
It's up to us what we make of it we can make it mean a lot of things-- that we did something wrong or we didn't do enough the first time around OR we can also make it mean that this is just a natural course of healing.
We heal in community; listen to this episode to learn what to do with old pain.

I recorded this episode while in Houston, where I served an LDS mission many moons ago. While there I had some unexpected revelations. As a missionary there, I remember at times feeling like a prophetess--that was the word that came to my mind and to my heart. At that time, I thought it was because I was serving in the capacity of a missionary. I have since learned, that capacity, that gift, that knowing - it is innate.
It's always been there.
And it's still there.
I hope you feel something stir within as you listen.

Today I share a message that came to me during the week I was on Writer's Island. One thing about being on a private island in the British Virgin Islands is that there is no shortage of inspiration. I wrote mostly out of doors.
The resort had beautiful nooks and spaces where we could go and channel from within the messages that we felt called to write. Midweek, after lunch, I started to feel this pull towards the water.
I wasn't quite sure why. I had already made plans to sit and write, so I followed my instinct. I followed my intuition and this episode is what I wrote. I call it "The Parable of the Cruise Ship." Leave a comment; I'd love to know your thoughts!

This morning this question came to me - "How can one be in sacred surrender AND declare their independence and get loud?"
Welcome to part 4 out of a series of four episodes about speaking up and elevating our voices!
Part 1 Episode 196 called why we don’t speak up. I take the opportunity to explore reasons why we and women particularly don’t speak up.
Part 2 - Episode 199, The cost of keeping quiet. I share multiple ways in which our inner peace and alignment is disrupted when we continually ignore or actively push down those inner whisperings.
Part 3, Episode 204 where the focus is the joy that we find once we are break our silence.
And finally part 4, today’s Episode 208 declare your independence and get loud!
Before you decide, this isn’t for you and you turn this off, I invite you to consider the things: I invite you to ask yourself what does declaring your independence mean to you? How will you declare your independence by getting louder?
I won’t lie have I been a little nervous to release this episode because it is bold. I am inviting you to step in into and not just tolerate discomfort, but to embrace it! So in my efforts to be an example of what’s possible, I share my thoughts with you on 'declaring your independence and getting loud (or louder!)"
