Black Boy Smile: A Memoir in Moments by D. Watkins
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/546660 to listen full audiobooks. Title: Black Boy Smile: A Memoir in Moments Author: D. Watkins Narrator: D. Watkins Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 5 hours 47 minutes Release date: May 17, 2022 Genres: Essays & Anthologies Publisher's Summary: A New York Times bestselling and award-winning author presents a complex story about his coming-of-age journey as a Black boy, from the societal roots of trauma to finding joy. "If I had two wishes, it would be that D. Watkins spend an entire book writing through the terrifying wonder of Black boyness in America, and for every human to read and share this book. I am shaken. Black Boy Smile changed my relationship to writing and me."―Kiese Laymon, author of Heavy and winner of the Andrew Carnegie Medal   At nine years old, D. Watkins has three concerns in life: picking his dad’s Lotto numbers, keeping his Nikes free of creases, and being a man. Directly in his periphery is east Baltimore, a poverty-stricken city battling the height of the crack epidemic just hours from the nation’s capital. Watkins, like many boys around him, is thrust out of childhood and into a world where manhood means surviving by slinging crack on street corners and finding oneself on the right side of pistols. For thirty years, Watkins is forced to safeguard every moment of joy he experiences or risk losing himself entirely. Now, for the first time, Watkins harnesses these moments to tell the story of how he matured into the D. Watkins we know today—beloved author, college professor, editor-at-large of Salon.com, and devoted husband and father. Black Boy Smile lays bare Watkins’s relationship with his father and his brotherhood with the boys around him. He shares candid recollections of early assaults on his body and mind and reveals how he coped using stoic silence disguised as manhood. His harrowing pursuit of redemption, written in his signature street style, pinpoints how generational hardship, left raw and unnurtured, breeds toxic masculinity. Watkins discovers a love for books, is admitted to two graduate programs, meets with his future wife, an attorney—and finds true freedom in fatherhood.   Equally moving and liberating, Black Boy Smile is D. Watkins’s love letter to Black boys in concrete cities, a daring testimony that brings to life the contradictions, fears, and hopes of boys hurdling headfirst into adulthood. Black Boy Smile is a story proving that when we acknowledge the fallacies of our past, we can uncover the path toward self-discovery. Black Boy Smile is the story of a Black boy who healed.

The human condition is on full display in these glimpses of our essential connectedness. Perfect for our times.”  —Dani Shapiro, author of Inheritance Sixty-five extraordinary writers grapple with this mystery: How can an ephemeral encounter with a stranger leave such an eternal mark? When Colleen Kinder put out a call for authors to write a letter to a stranger about an unforgettable encounter, she opened  the floodgates. The responses—intimate and addictive, all written in the second person—began pouring in. These short, insightful essays by a  remarkable cast of writers, including Elizabeth Kolbert, Pico Iyer, Lauren Groff, Gregory Pardlo, Faith Adiele, Maggie Shipstead, Lia Purpura, Kiki Petrosino, and Jamil Jan Kochai, are organized around such themes as Gratitude, Wonder, and Farewell and guide us both across the globe and through the mysteries of human connection. Addressed to a first responder after a storm, a gambler encountered on jury duty, a waiter in  Istanbul, a taxi driver in Paris, a roomful of travelers watching reality TV in La Paz, and dozens of others, the pieces are replete with observations about how to live and what we seek, and how a stranger’s loaded glance, shared smile, or question posed can alter the course of our lives.  Moving and unforgettable, Letter to a Stranger is an irresistible read for the literary traveler and the perfect gift for anyone who is haunted by a person they met once and will remember forever.

Patricia Highsmith: Her Diaries and Notebooks, 1941–1995 by Patricia Highsmith
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/531251 to listen full audiobooks. Title: Patricia Highsmith: Her Diaries and Notebooks, 1941–1995 Author: Patricia Highsmith Narrator: Caroline Hewitt Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 41 hours 50 minutes Release date: November 16, 2021 Ratings: Ratings of Book: 5 of Total 1 Genres: Essays & Anthologies Publisher's Summary: Patricia Highsmith: Her Diaries and Notebooks finally explores the riveting interior world of one of the most prolific and now canonical novelists of the twentieth century.Relegated to the genre of mystery during her lifetime, Patricia Highsmith is now recognized as one of “our greatest modernist writers” (Gore Vidal). Beloved by fans who were unaware of the real psychological turmoil behind her prose, the famously secretive Highsmith refused to authorize a biography, instead sequestering herself in her Switzerland home in her final years. After Highsmith’s death, her devoted editor Anna von Planta discovered her diaries and notebooks in 1995, tucked in a closet—with tantalizing instructions on how they should be read. For years thereafter, von Planta meticulously culled passages from over eight thousand pages to reveal the inscrutable figure behind the legendary pen. Beginning with her junior year at Barnard in 1941, Highsmith ritualistically kept a diary and notebook—the former to catalog her day, the latter to brainstorm stories and hone her craft. This volume weaves diary and notebook simultaneously, exhibiting precisely how Highsmith’s personal affairs seeped into her fiction—and how the sheer darkness of her imagination played out in her stories. Charming yet teetering on the egotistical, young “Pat” laid bare her dizzying social life in 1940s Greenwich Village, barhopping with Judy Holliday and Jane Bowles, among others. Alongside Flannery O’Conner and Chester Himes, she attended—at the recommendation of Truman Capote—the Yaddo artist colony in 1948, where she drafted Strangers on a Train. Published in 1950 and soon adapted by Alfred Hitchcock, this debut novel brought recognition and brief financial security, but left a heartsick Highsmith agonizing: “What is the life I choose?”Providing extraordinary insights into gender and sexuality issues in mid-twentieth-century America, Highsmith’s diaries convey her euphoria writing the lesbian romance The Price of Salt. Yet her sophomore novel would have to be published under a pseudonym, so as not to tarnish her reputation. Indeed, no one could anticipate that a novel depicting love between two women in the McCarthy era would have succeeded commercially.Seeking relief from America, Highsmith chronicled her peripatetic years in Europe, subsisting virtually on cigarettes and growing more bigoted and satirical with age. After a stay in Positano with a new lover, she reflected in her notebooks on being an expat, and gleefully conjured the unforgettable The Talented Mr. Ripley (1955); it would be this sociopathic antihero who would finally solidify her lasting reputation. At once lovable, detestable, and mesmerizing, Highsmith put her turbulent life to paper for five decades, acutely aware there must be “a few usable things in literature.” A memoir as significant in our own century as Simone de Beauvoir’s writings were to another time, Patricia Highsmith: Her Diaries and Notebooks is an historic work that illuminates a woman’s rise against the conventional tide to unparalleled cinematic and literary prominence. “Pat Highsmith’s astonishing candor in the witness stand of her personal notebooks, and heartbreaking self-exposures in the jury box of her diaries, are like nothing else in American confessional literature.”—Joan Schenkar, author of The Talented Miss Highsmith

The Scandal of the Century, and Other Writings by Cristóbal Pera, Gabriel García Márquez

Title: The Scandal of the Century, and Other Writings Author: Cristóbal Pera, Gabriel García Márquez Narrator: Bernardo De Paula Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 10 hours 59 minutes Release date: June 8, 2021 Genres: Essays & Anthologies Publisher's Summary: From one of the titans of twentieth-century literature, collected here for the first time: a selection of his journalism from the late 1940s to the mid-1980s—work that he considered even more important to his legacy than his universally acclaimed works of fiction. “I don’t want to be remembered for One Hundred Years of Solitude or for the Nobel Prize, but rather for my journalism,” Gabriel García Márquez said in the final years of his life. And while some of his journalistic writings have been made available over the years, this is the first volume to gather a representative selection from across the first four decades of his career—years during which he worked as a full-time, often muckraking, and controversial journalist, even as he penned the fiction that would bring him the Nobel Prize in 1982. Here are the first pieces he wrote while working for newspapers in the coastal Colombian cities of Cartagena and Barranquilla … his longer, more fiction-like reportage from Paris and Rome … his monthly columns for Spain’s El País. And while all the work points in style, wit, depth, and passion to his fiction, these fifty pieces are, more than anything, a revelation of the writer working at the profession he believed to be “the best in the world.”
