Format: Unabridged

Release date: 03-04-2025
Publisher: Macmillan Audio
Genres: Biography & Memoir, Non-Fiction, Social Science, History & Culture

Summary:
'Amanda’s story—innovatively told by versions of herself at different ages—underscores the lasting power of speaking your truth, building a movement, and never losing sight of your dreams.” —Melinda French Gates 'In Saving Five, Amanda Nguyen shows us how to reclaim the full spectrum of our lives, replete with pain, fury, creativity, and recovered dreams.” —Chanel Miller, author of Know My Name A brave and imaginative memoir by the Nobel Peace Prize nominee Amanda Nguyen, detailing her healing journey and groundbreaking activism in the aftermath of her rape at Harvard. In 2013, the trajectory of Amanda Nguyen’s life was changed forever when she was raped at Harvard. Determined to not let her assault derail her goal of joining NASA after graduation, Nguyen opted for her rape kit to be filed under “Jane Doe.” But she was shocked to learn her choice to stay anonymous gave her only six months to take action before the state destroyed her kit, rendering any future legal action impossible. Nguyen knew then that she had two options: surrender to a law that effectively denied her justice, or fight for a change—not only for herself but for survivors everywhere. A heart-wrenching memoir of survival and hope, Saving Five boldly braids the story of Nguyen’s activism—which resulted in Congress’s unanimous passage of the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Rights Act in 2016—with a second, beautifully imagined adventure, of Nguyen's younger selves as they—at ages five, fifteen, twenty-two, and thirty—navigate through dramatic incarnations of the emotional stages of her path toward healing, not only from her rape but from the violent turmoil of her childhood. The result is a groundbreaking work that seamlessly blends memoir with a moving journey toward acceptance and hope, forging a path ahead that is as inspiring as it is instructive. From one of the most influential activists (and now astronauts) of her time, Saving Five is at once a tribute to resilience, a celebration of healing through action, and a resounding cry to change the world.

Black Utopians: Searching for Paradise and the Promised Land in America - Aaron Robertson

Title: Black Utopians: Searching for Paradise and the Promised Land in America
Author: Aaron Robertson
Narrator: Dion Graham
Format: Unabridged
Length: 10:11:50
Language: English
Release date: 10-01-2024
Publisher: Macmillan Audio
Genres: History, Biography & Memoir, North America

Summary:
This program is read by by four-time Audie Award winner, Odyssey Award winner, and Los Angeles Times Book Prize Award–winning audiobook narrator, Dion Graham. One of Literary Hub's most anticipated books of 2024 A lyrical meditation on how Black Americans have envisioned utopia—and sought to transform their lives. How do the disillusioned, the forgotten, and the persecuted not merely hold on to life but expand its possibilities and preserve its beauty? What, in other words, does utopia look like in black? These questions animate Aaron Robertson’s exploration of Black Americans' efforts to remake the conditions of their lives. Writing in the tradition of Saidiya Hartman and Ta-Nehisi Coates, Robertson makes his way from his ancestral hometown of Promise Land, Tennessee, to Detroit—the city where he was born, and where one of the country’s most remarkable Black utopian experiments got its start. Founded by the brilliant preacher Albert Cleage Jr., the Shrine of the Black Madonna combined Afrocentric Christian practice with radical social projects to transform the self-conception of its members. Central to this endeavor was the Shrine’s chancel mural of a Black Virgin and child, the icon of a nationwide liberation movement that would come to be known as Black Christian Nationalism. The Shrine’s members opened bookstores and co-ops, created a self-defense force, and raised their children communally, eventually working to establish the country’s largest Black-owned farm, where attempts to create an earthly paradise for Black people continues today. Alongside the Shrine’s story, Robertson reflects on a diverse array of Black utopian visions, from the Reconstruction era through the countercultural fervor of the 1960s and 1970s and into the present day. By doing so, Robertson showcases the enduring quest of collectives and individuals for a world beyond the constraints of systemic racism. The Black Utopians offers a nuanced portrait of the struggle for spaces—both ideological and physical—where Black dignity, protection, and nourishment are paramount. This audiobook is the story of a movement and of a world still in the making—one that points the way toward radical alternatives for the future. A Macmillan Audio production from Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

Author: Gustave Le Bon
Narrator: Petr Taganov
Format: Unabridged
Length: 6:15:26
Language: English
Release date: 09-14-2024
Publisher: Authors Republic
Genres: Fiction & Literature, Non-Fiction, General, Philosophy

Summary:
“The Crowd” - one of the greatest works on psychology, in which one of the most prominent French psychologists Gustave Le Bon, trying to understand and put on the shelves the regularities of behavior of crowds of people - the crowd. In this case, Le Bon divides a simple “crowd of people” from the “animated crowd”, the spontaneous formation of which begins to obey completely different laws than each and any of the individuals entering this society. According to the author, such a “animated crowd” can be formed even with the number of 6 persons or more. All the properties of a personality in such “formation” recede into the background. Everything logical, self-centered and personal in such a mass of people is instantly suppressed by the individuals themselves, and completely other properties of people - subconscious ones - come out. Feelings and emotions of all those included in such “formation” are close to primitive and instinctive emotions and reactions. Moreover, such a “crowd” does not show and does not know other traits. At the same time, along with base and animal emotions, the animated crowd often has aspirations to fatal self-sacrifice and self-denial. Such “formation” begins to resemble an unconscious animal, which, obviously, can be controlled like an animal trainer in a circus. The role of trainers begins to be played by “leaders”. And the “animated crowd” trained by them turns into an engine capable of transforming social and political reality in the most fundamental way, both regionally and globally!

Summary:
Confederate general Thomas Jonathan Jackson had been a virtual unknown upon his arrival at the front line of First Bull Run, but by the spring of 1862, thanks to his actions at that battle, “Stonewall” was already becoming known across the battlefields. Ultimately, it would be the Valley Campaign of 1862 that made him a legend. In the early months of 1862, Jackson was given command of an army numbering about 17,000 in the Shenandoah Valley. His task was daunting. The loss at Bull Run prompted a changing of the guard, with George B. McClellan, the “Young Napoleon”, put in charge of reorganizing and leading the Army of the Potomac. That spring, the Army of the Potomac conducted an ambitious amphibious invasion of Virginia’s Peninsula, circumventing the Confederate defenses to the north of Richmond by attacking Richmond from the southeast. General Johnston’s outnumbered army headed toward Richmond to confront McClellan, but the Union still had three armies totaling another 50,000 around the Shenandoah Valley, which represented a threat to Richmond from the north. It was these armies that Jackson would be tasked with stopping. Jackson would go on to lead his undermanned army through what military strategists and historians consider the most incredible campaign of the Civil War. From late March to early June, Jackson kept all three Union armies bottled up and separated from each other in the Shenandoah Valley by marching up and down the Valley about 650 miles in 50 days, earning his army the nickname “foot cavalry.”  Although Jackson is revered today as an almost ideal commander, a lot of his subordinates bristled under his leadership, believing not only that he asked too much but that he was too strict.
